WORKSHEETS

Worksheet 1
How does blood flow in my body?

Objectives:
1. Identify the chambers of the heart using the circulatory model.
2. Trace the flow of blood using the circulatory model

Procedure:

A. Watch a video on the circulatory model that represents chambers of the heart.
1. Based on the circulatory model, name the four chambers of the heart.

Session Guide No. 6-9: Circulatory System 1 & 2

2. Use arrows to trace the direction of blood flow using the circulatory model.

3. Make a flowchart of the two types of circulation and combine them into one.
Using the labeled parts of the circulatory model, draw arrows to show the
direction of blood flow.

right ventricle right atrium

left atrium left ventricle

4. Show how blood flows in the human circulatory system by drawing small
arrows inside the simplified diagram below.

5. Using the diagram in No. 4 as a guide, make a flowchart to answer the

following questions. Use arrows to represent the blood vessels and the
direction of blood flow. (NOTE: “Body” - represents all body parts and
organs except the lungs)

e.g. How can blood from the left atrium reach the right atrium?
Flowchart: left atrium → left ventricle → body → right atrium

a. How can blood from your brain reach the lungs?

b. How can blood from the right atrium reach the left ventricle?
c. How can blood from the kidneys reach the lungs?
d. How can blood from the lungs reach the brain?

Worksheet 2
Through which blood vessels does my blood flow?

Objectives:
1. Define operationally arteries and veins based on its function
2. Identify the veins and arteries from a diagram of the human circulatory system
3. Make a flowchart showing the flow of blood from one organ to the other through the
appropriate blood vessel

Procedure:

A. Watch the second video and take note of the new labels on the tubes of the circulatory
model. These tubes represent blood vessels.
B.
1. Study the diagram below:

a. Which blood vessel/s carries blood

away from the heart? Write the letters.

__________________________

b. Which blood vessel/s carries blood

towards the heart? Write the letters.
__________________________

e. c. Define arteries and veins based on

your answers in a and b.

C. Using the diagram of the human circulatory system as guide, let us make a flowchart again
and include the name of the blood vessel (artery or vein).
e.g. from kidney to the lungs
ANS. kidney  vein  right atrium  right ventricle artery lungs

1. How can blood from the liver reach the lungs?

2. How can blood from the lungs reach the brain?
3. How can blood from the liver reach the kidneys?

Worksheet 3
How do the Circulatory and Respiratory Systems work together?

Objectives:
1. Infer what happens to the oxygen content of blood as it passes the lungs and the body
2. Give two important reasons why blood has to move in this manner.

Procedure:

A. Watch a video and observe the color of the liquid. Note the color legend below.
Color legend: Color pink/dark – oxygen-rich blood
Colorless/lighter – oxygen-poor blood

1. Write “oxygen-rich” or “O2-rich” and “oxygen-poor” or “O2-poor” on the “heart”

of the model as well as on the tubes based on the color legend.

2. Answer the following:

a. Which chamber of the heart carries oxygen-poor blood? _________________
b. Which chamber of the heart carries oxygen-rich blood? __________________
c. Do all arteries carry oxygen-rich blood? Why or why not? ________________
_______________________________________________________________
d. Do all veins carry oxygen-poor blood? Why or why not? _________________
_______________________________________________________________

3. Note what happens to the amount of oxygen as blood from the left ventricle
reaches the cells of the body and returns to the heart.
a. What happens to the amount of oxygen in this path? ____________________
b. Where did the oxygen go? _________________________________________

c. If O2-rich blood does not circulate in this path, what would happen to the
body?

_______________________________________________________________
d. Why do you think blood has to move from the heart to the different parts of
the body?

_______________________________________________________________

4. Note what happens to the amount of oxygen as the blood from the right ventricle
reaches the lungs and returns to the heart.
a. What happens to the amount of oxygen in the blood after passing the lungs?
_______________________________________________________________
b. Why does this happen?
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
c. If O2-poor blood does not return to the lungs what could possibly happen to
the amount of oxygen in the blood?

d. Why do you think blood has to move from the heart to the lungs?

5. Give two important reasons why blood has to circulate based on what you learned.

Worksheet 4
How do the Circulatory and Respiratory Systems work together? (Part 2)
Objective:
1. Trace how carbon dioxide and water from the body are brought to the lungs
2. Explain why blood from the body has to go back to the lungs.

Procedure:

A. Recall that carbon dioxide and water vapor are the gases produced in our body based on
the table of inhaled and exhaled gases.

Carbon dioxide and water are waste products made after different organs of the
body use up the food we eat with the help of oxygen to release energy. This energy is used
to keep us alive. Every time the cells get energy from food, carbon dioxide and water are
produced and are expelled from the lungs.

1. Using the diagram below, draw arrows to trace how carbon dioxide and water
vapor from the different body organs are able to reach the lungs.

2. Give another reason why blood from the different organs should go back to the
lungs.

Worksheet 5
Health issues involving the Circulatory System
Objective:
1. Apply the knowledge about the way blood flows in explaining a medical condition.

Procedure:

A. Mang Gerry, a 60-year-old man, went to a doctor complaining of pain in his left leg. After
getting the results, the doctor told Mang Gerry he has a blood clot (Tagalog: namuong
dugo) in a vein in his left leg. The doctor said the blood clot has to be treated as it might
be pushed by circulating blood, reach the lungs, block the arteries in Mang Gerry’s lungs
and possibly lead to death.

1. Explain how the blood clot in Mang Gerry’s leg could reach the lungs using a
flowchart. Include the type of blood vessel (artery or vein) through which the
blood clot could travel.
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
2. Using small arrows, trace the path of the blood clot until it reaches the arteries
supplying blood to the lungs.
