Q1 A vehicle’s trips study was conducted at a small district area in Cheras with the length of
each links shown in Figure Q1. The district was divided into six centers (Center 1, 2, 3, 4,
5, and 6) which were connected to the highway network. Trips between centres have been
monitored with the average of vehicle speeds and the result are presented in Table Q1a and
Table Q1b. Based on this information, you are required to:

(a) Assign the vehicle trips using the all-or-nothing assignment technique.
(6 marks)

(b) Make a list of links in the network and indicate the total trips assigned to each link.
(6 marks)

(c) Calculate the total vehicle-minutes of travel.

(5 marks)

(d) Discuss briefly on the results obtained.

Q2(a) The minimum cycle length for an intersection is determined to be 95 seconds. The critical
lane group flow ratios were calculated as 0.235, 0.250, 0.170, and 0.125 for phases 1 to 4,
respectively. What Xc was used in the determination of this cycle length, assuming a lost
time of 5 seconds per phase?
(7 marks)

(b) A pre-timed four-phase signal has critical lane group flow rates for the first three phases of
200, 187, and 210 veh/h (saturation flow rates are 1800 veh/h/ln for all phases). The lost
time is known to be 4 seconds for each phase. If the cycle length is 60 seconds, what is the
estimated effective green time of the fourth phase?
(7 marks)

(c) Explain under what conditions you would recommend to use of each of the following
intersection control devices at urban intersections:
i. Yield sign
ii. Stop sign
iii. Multi way stop sign
