Hindu Marriage Registra on

i. Registra on of Hindu Marriages Solemnized and gran ng of extract of marriages

registered.

Marriages solemnized under Hindu customs/ non-customary

Bridegroom/Bride should have completed 21/18 years respec vely
Both of them should be Hindus, Buddhist, Sikhs.
Proof of marriage
Anyone of the following place should fall within the jurisdic on of the
Registering officer:
Residence of bride.
Residence of bridegroom.
Solemniza on place.

Proof for all these shall be given

Wedding Invitation (or)
1 .
Temple Marriage Receipts(or)
MARRIAGE
Any proof of marriage solemnization .
Employee ID Card (or)
2. Ration Card (or)
RESIDENCE Driving License (or)
Passport or Visa
Birth Certificate (or)
3. AGE School/College Certificate (or)
Passport / Visa

In addi on to the above memorandum in duplicate with 4 passport size

photograph for bride and 4 passport size photograph for bridegroom should be
submi ed.

Fee
For the registeration of a Marriage which will be
i) exclusive of any other fees levied by devasthanam Rs.100.00
for marriages in temples
For a certified copy of an entry in Hindu Marriage
ii) Rs.10.00
Register :
For making a search  
a) if the entry is of the current Rs. 10.00
iii)
b) if the entry relates to any previous year or
Rs. 10.00
years (for each such year)
For Registering a marriage at any place outside
the office of the Marriage Registrar to be
iv) Rs. 50.00
appropriated by the Marriage Registrar in addition
to the fee in entry (i) above
Application fees for registering a marriage at any

Provided that no search fee shall be levied for grant of a certified
copy of an entry in the Hindu Marriage Register on application at
the time of registration of Marriage.
Provided further that an application fee of Rupees live in the shape

each of application presented for grant of such certified copy.

Marriages solemnized under any personal law can be registered.
Bridegroom/Bride should have completed 21/18 rears respec vely.

with fine.A er that it can not be registered.
Proof of marriage

officer.

4. Witnesses Id card for minimum two witness to be produced

iii. Registra on of Special Marriages and gran ng of cer ficates.

Marriages solemnized before the Registering officer or in any other form .
Bridegroom/Bride should have completed 21/18 years respec vely .
Anyone of the following place should fall within the jurisdic on of the
Registering officer.
Residence of bride.
Residence of bridegroom.
Proof for all these shall be given.
No ce of intended Marriages.
If no objec on for the marriage is received within 30 days from the
no ce,marriage will be registered .

iv. Gran ng of extracts of marriages registered under Indian Chris an Marriages

Act.
How to apply Indian Chris an Marriage Extract(Cer ficate)?

Extracts (Cer ficates) of Indian Chris an Marriages Registered under the Indian
Chris an Act 1872, by the licensee under the act or by Priests are received and
the extracts are given in the following Address:

O/o the Inspector General of Registra on, 100,Santhome High Road,

Chennai 28.

Marriage Extracts should be applied by bride /bridegroom/ parents. In case, the

men oned persons are unable to come personally any one with authorized
le er from either bride or bridegroom can apply.

General Instruc ons

1. Cer fied copies of I.C.N.1872 are issued based upon the extracts of the
marriage cer ficates issued by the priest, which are forwarded to this office
by the D.R’s concerned.
2. In respect of Roman Catholic whose marriage are solemnized at Chennai
extracts are received directly from “ARCHDIOCESE OF
MADRAS|SANTHOME” this office.
3. Par es can receive cer ficates in person or can receive through Tapal, if a
self-addressed envelope with stamp is enclosed with the applica on.
4. Applicant has to pay necessarily search fee, based upon the applica on
search will be done, and if the extract is available in the respec ve year,
cer ficates will be issued.
5. “Non Availability” report will be handed over to the applicant, if extracts
not found.
6. Applicant should verify the proof of cer ficate, a er the applicant has
approved if necessary 3 cer fied copies will be issued affixing holographic
s ckers.
7. Typographic errors will be corrected by this office any spelling error in the
extracts issued by the priest can be corrected only by the priest under
sec on 78 & Indian Chris an Marriage, 1872.

8. Records of marriage from 1872 to 1962 are stored at o/o DIGR, Rajaji Salai,
Chennai. The cer fied copies of marriage for this period can be issued only
a er making searches in those records and found to be intact.
9. Applica ons have to be submi ed in person with Rs.5/- Court Fee Label
admission of applica on will be accepted from 10AM to 1PM and
cer ficates will be issued from 4PM to 5PM on all working days.

Under the Dowry Prohibi on Act, demanding or accep ng dowry, directly
or indirectly is an punishable offence.
Fine of Rs.5000/- or imprisonment upto 6 months or both.
District Registrars are authorised to sanc on prosecu on.
Registrants may lodge complaints with the District Registrar.
