welcome back to MIG welding this will be

the more advanced continuous bead

welding part of the workshop and here we

are going to show you

heat management techniques which is what

will things all about and i'm going to

turn on my bottle as we did before and

purge gas will turn on the machine

clip the wire we're basically ready to

go we're not going to mess around we're

going to start welding here

trim a little wire and what we're going

to do before in the part 1 we did spot

wells

there's a couple of them left on this

part here we're going to do a continuous

bead and start from one side and i'm

going to bring the bead across now in

continuous bead welding the most

important thing is speed control of the

torch hit if you move very fast or you

move very slow

you have problems you have to adjust the

feed of the electrode wire the power

intense the everything has to take into

consideration

it's always best to take scrap metal

before you actually weld on pieces that

count and practice to get the Machine

yourself your coordination

I'll set up and doing well once the

machine is properly set

it's like falling off a log no problem

the main mistakes beginners make is

uneven speed control

now what I'll do is I'll make a world

across here and then I will have an even

speed control I'll come back and then

I'll do one with speed control

look at the two different beat so we'll

turn the machine on let it warm up

I'll get the rest of my safety kit I've

got my fire extinguisher

I know where the phone is I know where

the first day kit is I have other people

in the room with me in case there's any

issues that come up

so I'm wearing cotton pants will live

the shoes

I'm ready to go and my welding helmet

now i say the first one I'm going to

start one one side and go all the way

across to the other

I'm going to do it with very uneven

speed control

all right welding

now he heard the sound of that didn't

like it

it was popping machine needs to be set

up slightly coming around here I'm going

to turn the power intensive the half an

instrument

check this big control it was knocked

down a little bit ok now

we look at this this is where I started

you'll notice it piled up i had very

very poor penetration here see how

skinny it is

I was moving way way too fast right here

here i slowed down and started getting

even

you can see the change in color here

almost no penetration

now the part is heating up heating up

heating up you can see the wake of heat

on the tattletale color change there now

i'll do another pass and I'll do it at a

more consistent speed and then we'll

look at that

yeah
listen to the thermal

yeah

yeah

now always in a while shop treat any

piece of metal on a welding table like

it's red hot

they usually are you have to have gloves

handle them with pliers if we look here

Oh move my little head so I accidentally

trivet

here's the first one notice the and even

speed control here

here's the second look at the same with

all the way across

that's your speed control right here

notice the height if you can see it here

at the beginning has much more

pronounced protruded than it is at the

end that's because the heat buildup in

the part as you as I went across and I

got much more penetration

so that is a good bead that is a very

very poor beat and this is what we won't

nice consistent beat

let me show you what will happen if you

go to slope

yeah

you go to flow the heat flow from the

welder will get ahead of what the parts

able to dissipate and guess what will

happen now what I'm going to do i'll

start here move toward the end

welding

notice what happened to the end of my

wire heat buildup do that and let it get

too hot

back here now if you go too slow

especially on thinner material

the thinner material cannot dissipate

the heat the heat will build up and you

will get a burn through

we're lucky on this TV you can actually

look on the inside you can see the

material was sagging through for it

actually feel through heat management is

what good welding is all about

we have to manage the time the power

feed speed of the electrode all of the

above

to achieve enough heat flow to reach the

mountain state but not so much that it

becomes too much becomes molten because

gravity will take over the density of

Steel 27.8 is quite heavy and it will

drip out on you

also when you're welding big blobs of

Steel hitting the table splattering

falling on your shoes will get you to do

the one legged chicken dance when some

of that stuff gets down in your shoe and

you want to avoid that at all costs

burning yourself

so basically that is simple continuous

bead almost like apart

now let's join a couple of parts

together and see what i have actually go

back to lesson one where I showed this

this is a round tube connected to square

stock has been tack welded in four

places

so once it was the parts tack welded all

we have to do is connect the dots

let's see if we can do that real quick

see what that looks like find you this

to clamp down will

yeah

yeah
now the clamp serves two purposes it

provides electrical contact path by

forcing the work part into the tabletop

which is our electric ground plane and

it keeps it from running around on so

there's nothing worse than a moving

target especially when it comes to

welding

it's hard enough to do when things they

steal now a lot of you see that

sometimes I'm like this

use a two-handed grip I use a cross

brace

this is another very good technique

because what we don't want is that torch

head to become a helicopter and I'm very

high wind we have to have control of

this sucker

so anything you can do to stabilize it

either with a double handed grip putting

one arm across resting your hand and the

torch head across your forearm

whatever works for you works so do not

be afraid to experiment now what we're

doing a rail and surface a little more

complicated than doing a simple straight

line in two dimensions because now I

have to keep the torch head pointed out

the work and I have to keep it art as I

bring it around

now i'm not going to go all the way

around that would build up too much heat

in the end of the round t because edges

are the most prone to burn not the

solid-body the edge will always go

before the solid body

ok

let's see if we can start here bring it

around in there

welding
okay i didn't get the penetration I

wanted there in the beginning I don't

know if you can see this or not but it's

sort of piled up and if you heard it

through them through the sound system

here it's sort of popping and sputtering

a little bit

that's a cold well and it's also can be

a little problem with the purge gas

getting away around the round pipe makes

it more difficult to maintain the purge

is also i have a clean this during thing

yet

so let's use a little bit of a wire

brush and let's use another more

advanced technique

let's preheat the part remember how I

said its heat management the end of the

tube is going to heat up before the body

of the square because we've got two

sides coming together on that corner of

the square

we only have an edge here so the problem

is getting the square stock to come up

simultaneous with the round stock

propane torch

we're going to preheat the parts but i

mainly gotta preheat the square stuff

what this does is allow the more

difficult part to heat to get a little

bit higher so it has a head start on the

less difficult part to eat

all right

sharpen our - let's try it again

welding

that was a little better

we're getting them still not totally

happy with it but that's a better

setting than it was before

now i'm gonna let down

you can do this either standing or

sitting

whatever you prefer I'll orientated

around so you can see it

reset the clamp

there we go

yeah

playing a little bit

make sure the purge gas is a little low

let's go let's turn that up a little bit

oh that stupid that knobs down

let's bring it up bring the power up a

little bit it's a little bit low i could

hear it with my ear didn't have that

nastic sizzle going on

headed at times but didn't have it all

the time we sharpen our tip so we get an

ass clean
remember this tabletop is a heat sink so

the park and COO back off very quickly

preheat it a little bit

yeah

welding

that's what we're looking after an ass

clean sizzle from beginning to end

far far superior well to the first two

and that's what it takes to get yourself

and the equipment tuned up before you

actually weld on critical parts that

you're trying to build is get some

material the thickness you'll be working

with and then practice with it here's

the first one

something . we'll be right back

ok here's the first well we did notice

how lumpy it is it was cold sort of

stacked up on the top here was the next

one we did better but still no cigar

and this is the last one we did notice

how we have an ass move

Philip we have plenty of penetration you

actually heard the torch sizzle all the

way through and that we actually feel

the mass 90-degree fill it there and we

do that all the way around its fine

so now once we've got the machine -

we've got our for ourselves tuned up now

we can do really really first-rate

welding

ok now previously i showed you an ass

consistent speed control also the torch

head was in for controls you notice that

didn't zigzag around . in me I went in a

mass perfectly straight land

this is a standard make well it has very

little of the stacking damn affect the

little swirls that stack things up which

is a very acceptable strength-wise well

you really don't need it with a big but

it's not as pretty as one that has been

swirled which is what you get with other

techniques you can see the difference

between this one and this one that moved

to the state's speed well this one have

back and forth action now the critical

thing here is welding is controlling the

torch hit and of course I can do this

I've been doing this a long time for

beginner welder to keep you on track

when you first start beginning to do

continuous beads I have a nice little

technique that really accelerates of

what had to learn how to do things

you cut you to pieces of round tubing

like so you clamp them together here

with a clamp and then you clamp them

down on the table

so basically you keep create a scene

here now what I'm going to do with the

tortured

this is why it's good because this will

the welding torture the nozzle you can

set it down on the tubes in the v

that way you don't have to worry about

wandering left and right and all you

have to worry about his speed control

and getting the angle correctly you get

it too low you lose your purge guess if

you get it to have to see what you're

doing you're dirtying your kill you want

to get it about that one to two o'clock

angle on the clock and then you want to

get a nice steady speed motion

now i have it set up here put one loves

own show you what I'm talking about

you do that and do a few passes around

to living like that it really shows you

what we're talking about here

I'm getting an a straight consistent

speed control too fast not too slow

goalie lock smith

welding is all right being Goldilocks

whenever possible

now being that's a scold to give us a

mass little initiation I'll preheat the

parts a little bit

the middle is the same thickness so i

don't have to worry about a thick one

against the thin one

I'm just warming them up so that the

whale starts penetrating immediately

rather than piling up and then start

country

whoa whoa welding

yeah

there we go
the trout nozzle keeps any zigzag so now

all you have to do is to control

deposition and through speed you can

create first-rate wells right off the

bat I'm going to flip it over and i'm

going to show you another technique that

was a steady state

speed

here I'm going to go back and forth back

and forth back and forth always moving

but reversing my course in a retrograde

motion that will give should give a

slightly different looking bead and

deposit a little bit more middle

sometimes you need a little bit more

when you've got a great big gap you're

trying to feel like right between these

two tubes that's an awful big gap trying

to kill me
let's see if this is gonna work out for

me today

that was the problem

ok

always got to keep the holes and cable

running in a smooth large radius terms

here we go welding

welcome for backing for the action for

open for

now this is what most welders are going

for

if you look at it was like a series of

dominoes it's basically the swirls in it

looks much different and the smooth big

type B

you can also

get that kind of action

back and forth back and forth by 4 by

also doing semicircles half circles

and sometimes full circles that overlap

by growing loose that technique is very

very good when you're doing a very thick

piece against a very thin piece if you

have a thin piece and you have a thick

piece the thin pieces going to try to

burn if on the top your swirling like

this you can control the amount of time

you spend on the thin piece and create

most of the time over here on the thick

piece where it needs to be that's what

needs the heat because it's so thick

it's your thing

so what you would do you would do you're

crossing part of the loop here and you

will go out into a thin piece and come

back and you're staying on the thick

piece as you go alone

so let me see if I can find the thick

piece and I can piece and I'll

demonstrate that

yeah I've got it

do I have

here's one already done

ok here's some square stock on heavy

plate as you can see the heavy plate is

a good three times thicker look at the

thickness of the square stock over here

this is this is just flash here have

been filed away

that's the thickness of the square stock

this is the thickness of a flat plate

normally you would burn this up trying

to well these two parts together thin

part would overheat and you would burn

through it but you notice the swirl

pattern here so what you want to do you

linger on behavior part then you move

quickly into the latter part and then

get out of to get away from the life

part is heat management you put the heat

flow from the welder into the thicker

part

always

and that's how you're able to join thick

parts too thin part preheating and

controlling the heat deposition

you can create an ass large well without

burning up

small parts with proper heat man

so here we have virtually the same

situation

we've got an ask the interface of square

tubing

we have a fairly heavy piece of salt

so let's see if we can well those two

together about cooking in part away i'll

see if i can do it where you can see it

yeah

also it again I'm going to reiterate

it's very very important that the purge

gas be maintained in this kind of inert

gas welding if you're in a draft the

area you may have to set up pieces of

cardboard and plywood for enough the way

not to catch fire . but to shield the

well from blowing air blowing air will

remove the purge and create problems

so what i'm going to do i'm heating the

thick not going to eat then I'm heating

the thick the thick this is a double

whammy because the thick is bolted

directly to this aluminum plate which is

a great heat sink so we're really going

to have issues here eating up the heavy

and keeping the heavier part good and

hot

with
if it sizzles a little saliva on your

finger tip is you're ready to go

very sophisticated technique infrared

infrared thermometers probably a little

bit more modern

all right let's see what we got here

I probably could turn the power up

because of the thicker part

turn it up to help and I'm going to go

in a swirling motion and i'm going to

spend most of my time lingering on the

heavy part just a little bit of time on

the on the inner part

alright welding

yeah

yeah

there you go then welded too thick

and if you can look inside I don't know

if you can see it but you can look for

burn through spots if you're close to

the end of a tube and you can check to

see that you have adequate penetration

without burning all the way through we

have no burn through the less of very

that's a a very good adequate well looks

nice and quite strong and all you have

to do is do that time after time and you

can well as good as anybody and you can

definitely put your projects together

with absolute reliability

so that's basically it welding is

nothing more than heat management

look at the thickness of your parts look

at the initial temperature of the parts

think about preheating like about

getting your machine tuned up make sure

your tent up you're not too shaky or

nervous or feel bad with a cold or

flavor in your shakes if you got the

shakes from having cold flow you should

even attempt it

so do it where the proper gear I said

nothing to it nothing you can't build so

that's advanced drilling techniques and

go do your projects
