Calculating Bit Density in BWA Deployments

Wireless Market Considerations

Demand Densities

• Projected Revenue x Households / km2

• Proportionate to social income levels
• Proportionate to Internet awareness
• Quadratic to type of structures
(single detached vs multiple dwelling buildings)
Demand Density

Low Density

Medium Density

High Density
Wireless Market Considerations

Bandwidth Requirements of Applications

• Burstable utilization requirements of websites

(recommended data rate burstable to 256kbps)
• Sustained utilization of critical applications
(VoIP at least 32kbps)
• Sustained utilization requirements of streaming
applications (Video at least 128kbps)
Application Bandwidth Requirements

Sustained 32kbps
Burstable 256kbps

Sustained 128kbps
Wireless Market Considerations

Bit Density

• Demand Density and the Application Bandwidth

Requirements will determine Bit Density requirements
• Dependent on frequency spectrum availability
• Dependent on BTS Capacity
• Dependent on varying link conditions
Wireless Coverage Considerations

• WiFi and Canopy coverage area is based on a proven

deployment model of 8 sq. km. or 1.6 km cell edge

• WiMAX coverage radius map is based on a cell plan for a

high household density area covering roughly 346 km2 at
10.5 km cell edge

• All technologies exhibit degradation of modulation level

from the center until the lowest modulation level is reached
at the cell edge

Conclusion
• A WiMAX base station with a radius of 3 km has a
slightly lower bit density than 4x 802.11g or Canopy base
stations to cover the same area. A base station with a
radius beyond 3 km will have much lower bit densities
compared to these wireless technologies.
• A WiMAX base station with a radius of 6 km has a
slightly lower bit density than 14x 802.11b base stations
to cover the same area. A base station with a radius
beyond 6 km will have much lower bit densities
compared to WiFi 802.11b.
