● In English, there are multiple “past tenses.” For instance, the verb “to run” in the past
tense can be used as: I run, I did run, I just ran, I had run, I used to run, I was
running, I would have run, I could have run, I should have run, etc.
● In Spanish, there are also multiple past tenses. The past tense we’ll be studying in class
this year is called the Preterite, or in Spanish, El Pretérito. El Pretérito is used to
describe actions in the past with definite endings (completed).
● In order to form the pretérito of -ER and -IR verbs, drop the -ER or -IR from the
infinitive form, and then add the appropriate ending. -ER and -IR verb endings are the
same in the past-tense (pretérito):
6) Yo quiero sacar buenas notas, y quiero pasar un rato con mis amigos también.

● The past tense (pretérito) is a very irregular tense. This means that many verbs you
already know in the present tense DO NOT follow a regular pattern in the past tense,
including: tener, estar, andar, saber, querer, dar, ver, poder, venir, decir and traer.
● IR, SER and HACER are all IRREGULAR in the past tense.
● The verbs IR and SER have the same exact forms and conjugations in the preterite.
