Lesson 2 - What is a Population in Statistics?

Online Statistics Course

Statistics-

gathering, descrbing and analyzing the data

Actual numberic descriptions of sample data

Parameter: Numberical descriptions of a population characterstics (for e.g mean height of all males
in the world)

Branches of staistics

1. Descriptive Statistics: Gather, sort, summarize data from samples

2. Inferential Statistics: uses descriptive statistics to estimate population parameters

Frequency Distribution: Table that divides data into groups and shows how many data values occur
in each groups

Relative Frequency: %age of the data set that falls in a class

Cumulative frequency: the sum of a frequency for a class and all previous classes
