The eight directions and their significance

Mon, 03/08/2010

According to Vaastu Shastra, the entire universe exists in endless space and has no direction whatsoever. However, on Earth our
directions are defined with respect to the Sun. Vastu Shastra identifies eight cardinal directions on which all are activities are based, each of which has a
particular significance. India is the only country where the 4 sub-directions also have a special name assigned to them just like the main directions. This
emphasises the importance directions played in ancient times.
Orientation is very important in In the technology of Indian architecture. The basic rules of Vastu Shastra are based on the eight directions – Four principle
directions:
o North (Uttara, ruled by Lord Kuber, God of Wealth)
o South (Dakshina, ruled by Lord Yama, God of Death)
o East (Purva, ruled by Lord Indra, King of Gods, and Lord Aditya/Surya, God of Sun/Energy)
o West (Pashcima, ruled by Lord Varun, God of Rain/Water)
Four secondary directions:
o East-North (Ishanya, ruled by Lord Ishanya, God of All Quarters)
o North-West (Vayavya, ruled by Lord Vayu, God of Winds)
o South-West (Nairutya, ruled by Pitru or Ancestors)
o South-East (Agneya, ruled by Lord Agni, God of Fire)
The name of the direction itself suggests the nature of the direction. For example, East (purva) means preceding, West (Paschim) means after i.e. coming
afterwards; North (Uttara) means where there is an answer to everything. South (Dakshin) means slowly weakening, North-East (Ishaanya) ' means God, place
for water element. South-East (Aagneya) means the place for fire element and North-West (Wayavya) means the place for Air element, and South-West
(Nairutya) means the Nairuti (Demon) region of negative energies.
If the living and working spaces are oriented according to these directions, they have a direct positive influence on the residents. According to Vaastu, all the
eight directions are governed by different gods who have their own respective influences on human beings as described below.

North (Uttara)
Ruled by the god of wealth, Kubera which is beneficial for cash / treasury or valuable items. The door of the treasury should open towards North-East, East
direction. The North is also the direction of the Pole star, the fixed point in the sky that denotes stability and security. Hence, this is the direction to transact all
business and so the main door and Living room can be placed here. According to the scientific perspective north is a polarized centre of positive ions of electro-
of magnetic force of the earth. The effect of ultra violet rays in the morning sun rays is good over here, so it is best to have maximum open space and slope, in
this direction.
North-East (Eeshanya)
This direction is considered to be the direction of the Supreme Being. Hence it is suggested that there be no dirt, garbage, heavy structure or toilets or
bathrooms in this direction. It is very blight, worshiping and giving lot of success. It is positive. The direction has the capacity of giving intelligence, knowledge,
prosperity, wealth progeny, success, health and good life. A well, water reservoir in North east direction means guarantee of success.
East (Purva)
Ruled by the Sun God or Surya: The East, from where the Sun rises represents the essence of all beginnings. For every human-being day activities begin with
sunrise. Sunrise means east, where the darkness disappears and light begins. Morning sunrays are fully be enriched with ultra-violet rays which are highly
beneficial for human-body. East to direction is very advantageous prosperity oriented. It is thus recommended that the main doors and windows of a house face
East. If there is any vastu defect in the East direction like kitchen, toilet, cut, elevation, staircase going upwards or downward steps, high rise walls and less open
spaces then there is loss of health, loss of wealth hindrances in academic progress.
South-East (Aagneya)
The direction of Agni, the god of fire: This is the direction of heat and high levels of energy. It is advised that all cooking and Kitchen related activity be in this
direction. Electrical instrument, main-switch, transformers, Electric sub- station electric motor, generator, UPS battery inventers, air conditioners,
refrigerators, oven and all other fire base instrument should be placed in South- east.
South (Dakshina)
The direction of Yama, the god of death: The South represents the past and our ancestry. Guest and children's bedrooms can be placed here. No open space like
gardens, balconies, terraces should be in this direction. It is not advisable to have septic tank and kitchen in this direction either. South direction weakens
human life, hence all the auspicious tasks are forbidden in the south. In all the south direction yields nothing but mourning, depression and pain.
South-West (Nairutya)
The direction of Nairuthi or dissolution: The North East direction is the direction of god whereas the direction South West is that of demons. Two heterogeneous
things are continuously challenging each other right from the beginning of the universe like God - demon, good or - bad, woman- man, day - night, success -
failure, fame - disgrace etc. This region gives confidence, leadership, dominating attitude to the in charge of house. Master bedrooms in South West with head
towards south while sleeping maintain proper blood-pressure cardiac performance as well as proper digestion which lead to healthy and strong mind.
West (Paschima)
Governed by the god of water, Varuna: As the sun dims we are reminded of endings, the unknown and darkness. The West should be avoided for sleeping.
However, Bathrooms, Toilets, Staircases, Store rooms can be placed here. Trees can be planted here. A person with west entrance to vastu has very less success
in spite of a huge effort. If there are too many windows or doors and sunrays are entering the Vastu, then use of thick cotton curtains with red colour is
necessary. This ensures that the Infra red rays are absorbed in the curtain and the Vastu is protected. Otherwise the atmosphere in the Vastu becomes dry,
lifeless & without any excitement, which is very harmful to the human being.
North-West (Vaayavya)
The direction of the wind God, Vaayu: The atmosphere in an airy and ventilated house remains clean and fresh. Otherwise the Vastu becomes stuffy & the
atmosphere becomes very gloomy. This makes life unbearable. The North West direction has a lot of effect on interpersonal relationships, friendliness & co-
ordination. According to Vaastushastra it is better to have preferences for bedroom of elder son or guest room, study room, dinning hall, toilet, storage place for
domestic animals, septic tank and staircase, in this direction.
Centre (Brahmasthan)
Many structures in nature have a silent core of intelligence, and the activity of the structure is arranged around this core. We see this in the structure of galaxies,
solar systems, cells, and atoms. This core is called a Brahmasthan, or place where wholeness resides. As in the structures of nature there should also be a
Brahmasthan in a Vastu building.
The bindu obtained in the centre is the life - breath of the earth – 2:14 Vastu Sutra Upanishad

Ankusha weapon (in the hands of Lord Ganesha and Vayu)
An ankusha, a sharpened goad with a pointed hook, was the main tool for managing an
elephant. The ankusha first appeared in India in the 6th-5th century BC and has been used ever
since, not only there, but wherever elephants served man.
