Nitocote ET550
Section A : General Comments
Comments
High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 350C, the following guidelines are adopted as good
working practice:

(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment, avoiding
exposure to direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is especially important to
keep cool those surfaces of the equipment which will come into direct contact with the material
itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, arrange temporary shading as
necessary.
(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available to ensure that application is a continuous
process.
Equipment
It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement.
Protective clothing : Protective overalls
: Good quality gloves, goggles and face mask

Preparation equipment : Stiff wire brush

: Proprietary blasting equipment

Mixing equipment : 1 KW slow speed heavy duty drill, 400/500 rpm

: Fosroc mixing paddle MR3
: Suitable sized mixing vessel

Application equipment : Brush

: Graco spray equipment

Application - points of note

Fosroc operates a policy to encourage the use, where possible, of approved or licensed applicators.
This ensures that repairs are completed satisfactorily so that the long term performance of the
materials is assured. For contractors who wish to apply the materials themselves Fosroc is also able
to offer technical assistance and training, either on-site or at its Training Centre in Jeddah.

Section B : Application Method

1.0 Preparation

Following the preparation, care should be taken to ensure that any

surface irregularities are filled with Nitomortar TC2000.

1.1 All surfaces must be clean and free from debris, loose or flaking material, areas of standing
water, oil grease and organic growth.

1.2 New concrete surfaces must be fully cured, laitance free and free from any traces of
shuttering, release oils and curing compounds.

1.3 Sand blasting is recommended as an effective method of surface preparation and provide
suitable key for Nitocote ET550.

1.4 Any metal surfaces should be grit blasted to meet the requirements of BS4232, First Quality.

1.5 For metal surfaces, the lining work should be programmed so that newly cleaned metal is
coated as soon as possible before the formation of rust or scale.

2.0 Mixing

Nitocote ET550 should always be mixed in an open, well ventilated area.

2.1 The contents of the base can should be stirred thoroughly to disperse any settlement.

2.2 The entire contents of the hardener can should be poured into the base container ensuring
that the sides and bottom of the container are well scraped.

2.3 The two components should be mixed mechanically using a Fosroc mixing paddle (MR3)
fitted on a heavy duty, slow speed electric drill.

2.4 The mixing should be carried out continuously for 3-5 minutes, until a uniform consistency is
achieved.

3.0 Application

Nitocote ET550 should not be applied over existing coatings.

3.1 Brush application

3.1.1 Nitocote ET550 should be applied in two coats. The thoroughly mixed material should be
applied with a suitable brush.

constructive solutions

3.1.2 The first coat must be firmly applied and be well scrubbed into the surface, ensuring a
uniform coating with a wet film thickness not less than 270 microns, be allowed to dry for not
less than 16 hours at 20°C.

3.1.3 The second coat should be applied as above, again achieving a wet film thickness of 270
microns. In the case of possible problems of solvent entrapment, reduce the w.f.t. and
increase the number of coats to achieve a total wet film application of 540 microns.

3.2 Spray application

3.2.1 Faster rates of application are possible using Graco spray equipment. Consult the local
Fosroc office prior to application for technical advice.

4.0 Cleaning

4.1 Tools and equipment should be cleaned with Fosroc Solvent 102 immediately after use.

Section C : Approval and variations

This method statement is offered by Fosroc as a ‘standard proposal’ for the application of Nitocote
ET550 It remains the responsibility of the Engineer to determine the correct method for any given
application.

Where alternative methods are to be used, these must be submitted to Fosroc for approval, in
writing, prior to commencement of any work. Fosroc will not accept responsibility or liability for
variations to the above method statement under any other condition.

solution where performance & durability is a must.

Fosroc Corrosion Solutions

FCS systems and their advantages were introduced to
the Technical Engineering Department of the KFIP
Authority, Ministry of Transportation.

FCS systems have been the right solution for the client in
such restricted & important area in order to arrest future
corrosion potentials and, in turns, eliminating the need for
frequent maintenance projects.

Total 1,682 units of Galvashield LJ system have been

used as Cathodic Protection for the steel piles within the
inter-tidal zones, which suffered from aggressive
corrosion process. More than 26,000 units of Galvashield
XP system have been utilised as Corrosion Prevention for
all deteriorated areas of the reinforced concrete berths.
Total 15,000 units of Galvashield CC65 system have
been utilised as Corrosion Control for embedded steel
reinforcement at non-deteriorated areas but with high
potential for corrosion.

Along with above-motioned FCS technologies, high

performance concrete repair mortars, protective coatings
and sealants were utilised for complete concrete & steel
elements repair works.
