1. Define heat transfer through conduction, convection and radiation. Give example for each in
everyday life
2. The following diagram shows a jointed bar PQR whose two components have an equal cross-
sectional area. Material QR has a thermal conductivity that is two times that of material PQ.
Assume that there is a constant rate of heat conduction along the length of the bar and that
ends P and R area at temperatures of T1=100℃ and T2=0℃. Calculate the temperature at joint
Q.
3. Most heat comes into a room through glass window and the room has a lower temperature
than the outside temperature. An air-conditioned room has a glass window whose area is 2.0
m x 1.5 m and thickness is 3.2 mm. If the temperature on the inner surface of the glass is
25℃ and the outer surface is 30℃, what is the rate of the heat conduction entering the room?
4. A 4-liter steel container is 95 % with alcohol. If the initial temperature of the container is 0℃
and the container is heated to 70℃, what is the volume of alcohol spilled? The coefficient of
linear expansion of steel is 0.000011/℃; the coefficient of expansion of alcohol is 0.001/℃.
5. The following diagram shows two bars PQ have an equal cross-sectional area, making a
combination wire of length AB, where AC= 2CB. The two bars are joined with different
temperatures at each end as shown.
A C B
40C P Q 110C
P has a thermal conductivity that is equal to half of thermal conductivity of Q. What is the
temperature at joint C?
6. A piece of copper pipe has a length of 2 m at 25℃. Determine the length of the pipe at: The
coefficient of linear expansion of copper is 0.000010/℃;
i. 100℃
ii. 0℃
7. Where appropriate, use the information given. The specific heat capacity of water = 1 cal.g-
1 o -1
. C , the specific heat capacity of ice = 0.5 cal.g-1.oC-1, the specific latent heat of fusion of
ice = 80 cal.g-1, the specific latent heat of vaporization = 50 cal.g-1
Calculate the heat energy required to:
i. melt 50 g of ice at 0℃
ii. evaporate 50 g of water at 100℃
8. A mass of 14 g of ice at 0℃ is placed in a drink of mass 220 g at 25℃. Calculate the final
temperature of the drink, given that the specific latent heat of fusion of ice is 334 𝑘𝐽𝑘𝑔−1 and
that the specific heat capacity of water and the drink is 4.2𝑘𝐽𝑘𝑔−1 𝐾 −1.
9. A glass has a volume capacity of 400 cm3, is fully filled with water at 200C. If the glass and
the water are heated to raise the temperature of the water to 700C (αglass = 9 x 10-6 C-1 and
water = 2,1x 10-4 C-1), then determine the amount of water spilled.
10. A mass of 200 g of water at 30oC is mixed with x g of ice at -10oC, given that the specific
heat capacity of water = 1 cal.g-1.oC-1, the specific heat capacity of ice = 0.5 cal.g-1.oC-1, the
specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 80 cal.g-1). If the final temperature of the water is 5oC,
then determine the value of x.
11. The following graph shows increase in temperature (T/℃) – thermal energy (Q/cal) absorbed
by a substance which is having the specific latent heat of fusion = 80 cal.g-1
