Footy boss goes to the dogs

AFL Goldfields Regional General Manager Rod Ward is

Ward, 50 sat down with the Moorabool News sports reporter
Todd Whelan, to reflect on his career in the AFL’s Regional
system before he embarks on the next chapter of his life as
General Manager with the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club.
TODD: Why have you decided to resign from your position?
ROD: I just think it’s time for a new challenge. This new
position provides an ideal opportunity to refresh and

TODD: What has been the most rewarding aspect or feature

the four leagues under the AFL Goldfields banner - I refer to
funding, relevance and validation?
ROD: It hasn’t been that hard - just focus on the highest

Going green, in more ways than one

By Meg Kennedy

After its greens were almost destroyed by salty bore water and drought, Ballan
Bowling Club has been given the opportunity to have year-round green grass.
The lawn bowls Club was recently granted $100,000 from Moorabool Shire Council
for a new synthetic green, as part of Council’s Community Development Fund.
The news comes as club members have worked tirelessly since March to get the
grounds back up to a playing standard, with many volunteer-run working bees
held, and donations made, in preparation for next month’s 2019/20 pennant season.
Bowling Club President Mick Conroy said the artificial grass will help make the
club “an all-year round facility for the community.”
As the club is closed for five-months of the year, Mr Conroy said it allows for more
community involvement on the grounds.
“We wanted to utilise the club more…through the Moorabool Shire community
grants, [the club] wants to be more active and progressive and to get more
community involvement,” he said.
As well as opening more opportunities for the community, Mr Conroy said the
artificial grass is also environmentally friendly.
“Our impact on the environment will be less, with less water, less chemicals on
the system, and water can be used elsewhere,” he said.
Mr Conroy said the grant will mark “a new direction” for the club after a
tumultuous year.
“We are trying to utilise the grounds with more members, but mostly for more
community groups to use it, and for more participation from across the Moorabool
Shire.”
Construction for the new turf will begin in late-April 2020.
The upcoming season is still on schedule and begins on 21 September.

We had the rug pulled right out from under us on Saturday with Redan handing out a brutal lesson.

No job too big or too small. This was almost an unlikely victory for the determined Twos. Just sneaking into 6th spot in the last

Kyle Doyle was a late withdrawal due to a family bereavement. (Our thoughts are with Kyle and
his family.)
But we came out to play! Leading by example again, Coach Ross Gundry played all over the ground
and ran and jostled, determined to set the scene for a win. Jordan Spiteri, showed his class and
his 2018, senior-side experience in an un-flustered BOG performance. Jessee Pattison’s run was
too much for the Lakers and the Holt brothers – Ben and Sam - dug in, in true Darley fashion. Kirk
Fenton was superior in the back line and Lachy Herring showed a tough, hard style that eclipsed
the opposition mid-fielders. All in all, a gutsy performance to progress through to next week.

Seniors
We let the season slip through our fingers on Saturday with our first home-ground defeat in 16
games. This was a miserable finale to a great but hard season where we struggled for commitment
and numbers. The Devils have been propped up by our youngsters for much of the season and
yes, we have had our injuries. But on Saturday we were out-muscled, out-played and out-classed
by the Lions who beat us all over the ground. An early Mad-Monday was not what we had hoped
for this year (especially,) but this fantastic footy side and their great, great coach – Heath Scotland
– won’t have lost any fans. The Darley Army salutes you all and we recognise what a great bunch
