CHAPTER I

Introduction

In this chapter the researcher discusses Background of Study, Limitation of the Problems,
Problem Statement, Objective of the Study, Benefit of The Study, Definition of Key Term.

A. Background

Communication represents activities carried out by all humanity as long as they still
live in the world, because humans as social beings need to interact with each other.
Communication is carried out to convey messages to people who communicate with the hope
that the person has the same perception with us, in other words, communication is the activity of
delivering messages from communicators to the communicant.
Communication is what makes effective communication between communication
delivered with the person speaking. This of course supports a person's ability to communicate.
There are two things that occur when communication takes place, namely a discussion of the
meaning and interpretation of meaning. Signs conveyed can be verbal or non verbal. Verbal is
defined by the use of words as messages, and non-verbal means communication with signs other
than words or language.
Humans are social beings. An individual cannot live complementing each other,
between fellow humans.Humans also need to communicate to foster a relationship between
fellow humans because communication is one of human needs.
Language is an important thing that needs to be learned because language has
important functions and roles when communicating. The main language function is as a
communication tool used by every human being. A person can use ideas, wants, thoughts and
convey information through language so that language is a means of communication that is very
important for humans. Communication is a form of interaction that influences one another,
intentionally or unintentionally and is not limited to forms of verbal communication but also in
terms of facial expressions, writing, painting, art, and technology.
Communication can use mass communication media such as magazines, newspapers,
television, and radio. This is due to the technology for communication that has developed
rapidly, so that communication has many choices. While in delivering a communication
message, there are several tools that can be used to convey the message. Examples are letters,
telephone, letters, sms, or via e-mail. Because technology and the human mind are increasingly
developing, in conveying messages at this time can use media such as films, novels, image
illustrations, even with music.
Music can be said as a medium in delivering messages. Because with the strains of
tone, music is an expression of thought, content, heart, and human feeling in the form of sound.
Music can also be said as a universal language, that is, as a medium of public expression and
music is able to unite many people, both the lower class and the uppermost. Unwittingly music
has influenced social life in people's lives. So that music is created from the disclosure of
phenomena that occur in society. Music is also interpreted as an expression of feelings that are
expressed in the form of sounds or voices. Expressions issued through human voice are called
vocals, while expressions issued through the sound of a musical instrument are called
instrumental.
 Whether we realize it or not, in everyday life there is a lot of music involved, because the
definition of music itself is regular sound. The music is packed by combining the song lyrics of
each verse. This is because, music is one tool that can be used to convey communication
messages. By combining the lyrics of each verse, so that the song lyrics can become a
continuous unit, so the message delivered can be well received by the audience.
There are so many types of music, there are soft-pitched music and some are loud.
Different types of music that exist throughout the world. Music in Indonesia itself has
experienced very rapid development. This is supported by the increasing number of mass media,
both media print (newspapers, magazines, tabloids), electronic media (television and radio), and
online media (website). Thus the type of music that exists in Indonesia is increasingly diverse
such as dangdut, pop, rock, jazz, reggae, and others. All types of music have their own
characteristics and characteristics to attract listeners. Whatever the taste of the music, every
individual who listens to music will feel calm in his heart and soul. Because music can affect the
listener. Music can also be an inspiration for people who listen to it, because every music lyrics
that are sung encourages someone to act, behave, and even change their life patterns.
Music can be interpreted as a domain of pop culture, and can easily find many concrete
examples of how cultural power is carried out. Through lyrics written by songwriters, listeners
are invited to interpret through the brain that stores experience and knowledge and processes it as
a basic foundation in digesting song lyrics. In other words, song lyrics cause many perceptions
that are greatly influenced by the level of understanding of someone who comes from the life
experience they have. In another sense a smartly created song can bring listeners to appreciate
and absorb the positive meaning of a lyric, regardless of the genre that exists today. The
language in the song lyrics also carries a variety of complex visual depictions, symbols, and
metaphors.
Preferred music is very influential for people who listen. Besides being able to entertain
and be an inspiration, in music also contained the meaning and message to be conveyed by the
song creator through the words contained in the song lyrics in each verse. With song lyrics, a
songwriter can communicate with his listeners. The message conveyed by a songwriter through
the song will certainly come from outside the creator's self, in the sense that the message comes
from his mindset and from the results of the surrounding social environment.
In the song lyrics the song creator can convey feelings, opinions, even everyday events
that occur. Lyrics are a set of words that make up a song, usually consisting of verses and
choruses. The meaning of lyrics can either be explicit or implicit. Some lyrics are abstract,
almost unintelligible, and, in such cases, their explication emphasizes form, articulation, meter,
and symmetry of expression which is hard to understand. A lyric is a paper written by someone
who has imagination in composing beautiful words that have deep meaning. Lyrics and music
combined would be a wonderful song and pleasing to the ear. The writer of lyrics is a lyricist or
lyrist. The analysis and understanding of what song lyric is about depends on how people could
make interpretation. People may guess the typical or the character of the writer of the recorded
text. By knowing the character of the song writer, it helps us understand the lyric of the song,
even though it is not as perfect as what we really want. So that many songs that raise the theme
of an event or event that occurs everyday, the themes that are often raised by songwriters are
themes about love, social, religious, nationalism.
One of the singers who performed songs with themes about the events she felt in the daily
environment of his life in the lyrics of the song.
The Three Degrees, is an American female vocal group, which was originally formed in
1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] Although a total of 15 women have been a member over
the years, the group has always been a trio. The current line-up consists of Valerie Holiday,
Helen Scott and Freddie Pool. Holiday has been a member since she first joined in 1967, while
Scott has been a permanent member since 1976, having previously been in the group from 1965
to 1966. The group were particularly successful in the UK, achieving 13 Top 50 hit singles
between 1974 and 1985.
The original members were Fayette Pinkney, Shirley Porter and Linda Turner. Porter and Turner
were soon replaced by Janet Harmon and Helen Scott. The line-up from 1967 to 1976 was
Pinkney, Valerie Holiday and Sheila Ferguson, who would go on to sing lead on most of the
group's biggest hits. This line-up topped the US Hot 100 as featured vocalists on
the MFSB single "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" in 1974, and had seven UK Top 40 hits,
including the 1974 single "When Will I See You Again", which was a huge international hit,
reaching the Top 5 in seven countries, including number two in the US and topping the UK
Singles Chart.[2]
Based on explanation above, To know the exact meaning, message and experience of this
song. The researcher will analyzed the intrinsic and extrinsic elements found in the song lyrics
from the first album “When Will I See You Again” By The Three Degrees.

B. Formulation Of Problems
Referring to the background illustrated previously, two research questions are the focus
of the current study:
a) What are the intrinsic and extrinsic elements found in the song lyric ?
b) What value are found in the song lyric ?
c) What is the implication for the English Language Teaching ?

C. Benefit Of The Study

The researcher is expected to give some benefits for the students, the teachers, and other
researchers.
1. For Students.
through Song lyric, the students will get an enjoyable situation and get clear words and meaning
and their meanings, pronunciation, spelling and use of them. The result of this study, hopeful, will
improve their vocabulary mastery.

2. For the teachers.

For the teachers, by understanding the result of this study, they can be careful in selecting
teaching techniques and methods in their class. It is hoped that the result of this study helps
teachers to teach vocabulary properly by using Song lyric.

3. For other researchers.

For other researchers, the result of the study helps them in teaching vocabulary mastery.
In conducting researcher process, the data offer the literature for the researchers. It is hoped that
the data can open their mind in completing vocabulary field research.

 The conclusions from the lyrics of this song were found from the first lyrics of 'Precious
moments' which the author was very hopeful to meet his lover. the lyrics of this song tell the
time of togetherness of the writer with someone he loves. he missed when they did a lot of good
things they had passed together. About their love journey. and writers are confused about the
status that exists between them, whether it's the same as love or just ordinary friendship. the
author experienced a very long dilemma. the author feels he has but actually does not have, feels
he has the one who makes him feel very comfortable. But in fact, he is nobody for the writer. He
is not someone who belongs to him.
Many people who are in a status zone without status feel confused and wonder with the
feeling they are feeling. Want to act like a lover or partner, but ultimately undone because he is
nobody. There are many reasons why two people who give each other comfort and love do not
want or can decide to be together and establish a bonded relationship. If this is the case, the next

behavior in society and attitude towards people in general. Literature helps us to notice
everything beautiful around us.

Self-development

Literature helps us to develop ourselves. Thanks to books, articles, magazines, we have the
opportunity to fill ourselves with new knowledge, cultivate good qualities and strive for
something more.

CONCLUSIONS

According to the data analysis above, it can be concluded that the song lyric When Will I
see you again by the three degrees, the researcher concluded the advantages using song Lyric to
teaching learning Vocabulary mastery. Related to the students’ attitude or behavior to the lesson,
there were some positive progressions that supported them in mastering the vocabulary taught.
Using new media called lyric song media could create more comfortable atmosphere inside the
class. During the teaching- learning process, the students were more active, enthusiastic and also
interested to take a part in the lesson. They were not shy anymore and they were highly
motivated to join the instructional process. It also increased their confidence. It can be seen from
their bravery in demonstrating some actions or giving some instructions as well in front of the
class to reflect certain vocabulary meaning. As the final result, they could remember the meaning
of words easily.
The message that we get from the song lyric is that establishing relationships without
status is actually a risk because there is no commitment in the relationship, one party may leave
the other party or easily turn to the other because there is no binding commitment . If so, you
should immediately explain your true desires in the relationship. If the partner agrees, then you
are lucky because the relationship can continue. If not, then the relationship should be ended.
Mostly, the chosen words that she used in the song lyric are not complicated yet simply
words that hopefully the listeners and the reader can get the message and the meaning easily.
From the analysis of the meaning, we can conclude that the song lyric “when will i see you
again” has meaning of struggling in love and love in full expectation.
