CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Mobile games are games which are designed to be played on mobile


phones, tablets, smartphones, PDA and the like. No one can deny mobile gaming
is one of the most popular hobbies which majority of the youth usually spend
their time ON. Various people change their leisure activity from reading books to
playing mobile games since it is mainstream and popular in today’s generation.
These games can attribute positive effects and has a positive impact on people
nonetheless, there are negative effects as well. One of the most-talked about and
widely known games is the Mobile Legends.

It is a multiplayer online battle arena mobile game created and developed


by a company called Shanghai Moonton Technology in year 2016, wherein the
player must choose an avatar or a hero to use in the game. There are five players
in each team and the first team with five players shall defeat the second team
with five players and vice versa in order to get a higher rank. Players can do an
interaction during the game and there are tournaments that are being held by
playing this particular online game. It has a positive impact on youth; it lessens
the stresses that they deal with, eases their mind and it can actually make them
forget about the reality for a little while.

According to Dr. Cynthia R. Green (PhD), mobile games can help to


sharpen a person’s thinking due to the fact that in every game there is an
involvement of an individual’s strategical, critical, and multitasking skills.
However, playing this game can cause absentmindedness, sleep problems, and
distraction to the players. As stated by Anderson and Dill (2000), playing video or
mobile games can cause students to get failing marks due to being addictive. This
game consumes students’ time that they tend to overlook their studies due to
spending a lot of hours on it instead of studying. In relation to students’ academic
performance, lots of students get distracted and it results them to achieve poor
performance in school.

In a viral Facebook post, an instructor named Majalia Amor Diaz from


Pasig City had a first encounter of students who got distracted by playing Mobile
Legends during the class, which led her to confiscate their phones while they
were on a game as an act of punishment and discipline. It affects social
interaction since their eyes are glued on their screens; they are having too much
screen time which is utterly unhealthy. Even so, these negative effects can be
prevented by guiding the students well and creating a schedule for playing.
(Juventus Vox, 2019). Contrary to what was previously stated, there are cases
playing it can help students to improve their performance and grades.

As mentioned by Dr. Alberto Posso in an article (2016), those youth who


frequently play mobile games including this particular game turns out can be a
help in improving their academic performance. For instance, from a certain
article, Mobile Legends became a grade 10 student’s inspiration to study hard
and to do better at studying. It is beneficial and helps in honing the students’
skills; howbeit, can be a factor of acquiring low marks in school as well.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to understand the relationship between playing


Mobile Legends and the academic performance of the selected high school
students in Vox Dei Academy.

This study wanted to find an answer of these following problems and


questions:

1. How many hours do students spend their time on this particular game?
2. How does playing Mobile Legends affect the students’ academic
performance in relation with:
a.) Class participation b.) Grades for 1st grading period
3. Does it affect the amount of hours they spend in studying?
4. Does playing Mobile Legends and the academic performance of high school
students have a significant interrelation?

5. What are the positive and negative effects of playing Mobile Legends on the
academic performance of the high school students?

ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS
There is significant correlation between playing Mobile Legends and the
academic performance of high school students.
NULL HYPOTHESIS
There is no significant correlation between playing Mobile Legends and the
academic performance of students.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 To determine the possible effects of being immersed in playing Mobile


Legends towards the academic performance of high school students

 To attain knowledge regarding the benefits in playing Mobile Legends

 To spread awareness apropos of the effects in playing this particular game

 To fathom the bad and good academic performance of students resulted by


playing Mobile Legends

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is about the correlation of playing Mobile Legends


and the academic performance of selected high school students and this
research aims to help the following:

Mobile Legends players and students. It will give them knowledge about
the effects of playing this particular game and how to make them more
responsible and cautious in terms of playing mobile games.

Parents. It will make them aware regarding the possible negative effects
as well as the positive ones their children might get by playing Mobile
Legends. By the help of this study, it will help them to guide their children
and motivate them to be better at studying. It will help also them in
understanding their children’s study habit.

Teachers. It will provide them knowledge regarding the study habits of the
students and how to handle those students who often play this kind of
game. It will also help them on how to discipline and educate their
students in terms of Mobile gaming.

Future researchers. This study would help them by being a guide for their
research and it can be used as a reference data of other researchers who
would conduct a research with same subject matter.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

 SCOPE
 PURPOSE
To determine the connection between playing Mobile Legends and the
academic performance of high school students and to spread awareness
about its negative and positive effects.

 TOPIC

This study is about the correlation of playing Mobile Legends and the
academic performance of selected high school students. Mobile Legends
is an online game created to be played on mobile phones, tablets, and the
like, which is currently popular for being fun and addicting; It is usually
played by majority of the youth.

 LIMITATIONS
 RESPONDENTS
This study covers the Vox Dei Academy’s highschool students who are
exposed to technology and frequently play Mobile Legends online. The
researchers would conduct an interview and throw questions at them in
regards to this particular game. This research will find the reason behind
the bad and good academic performance of students who play Mobile
Legends.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

According to Anderson and Dill’s theory (2000), in general being


immersed in video and mobile games is often associated in our society with
a poor academic performance. Other research studies do support this
anecdotal idea. A research study states that video and mobile games could
be helpful to the in class learning experience (Hitch and Duncan, 2005). It
mentions using tactical and strategy games to enhance the level of
understanding and engagement with the material. As stated by Molcho
(1988), instructional games can promote retention and the ability to transfer
knowledge to new domains.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The paradigm below represents the relationship between playing Mobile


Legends and the academic performance of the students. The left diagram is
an independent variable and the right diagram is the dependent variable.
As an input, the researchers will conduct an interview and will gather the
computed grades of the selected students in Vox Dei Academy.

DEFINITION OF THE TERMS

 Mobile games – is a video game played on a feature phone, smartphone,


PDA, tablet computer, portable media player or calculator. This does not
include games played on dedicated handheld video game systems such as
Nintendo 3DS or PlayStation Vita. Mobile games are played using the
technology present on the device itself.

 Mobile Legends – is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) mobile


developed and published by Shanghai Moonton Technology. The game has
become popular in Southeast Asia and will be a medal event at the 2019
Southeast Asian Games.

 Internet – A global computer network providing a variety of information


and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using
standardized communication protocols.

 Academic Performance – is the extent to which a student, teacher or


institution has achieved their short or long-term educational goals. It is
measured by the final grade earned in the course.
