Why Do We Strive for Perfection Even If It Is Not Attainable?

As a student who’s specialized in arts, it’s only natural for me to join a contest that
involves making puppets and performing a play. Me and the other members started gathering
early in the school year to discuss about the play. We skipped classes to think of concepts,
visioned how we wanted to execute our performance, distributed the parts, and thought of
ways on how we’ll make the puppets, which were the most significant part of the play. I
stood as the leader of our little group and as the leader, I wanted to show them an outstanding
performance. For months, I wasn’t able to have a decent sleep. I went through countless times
of trials and errors making puppets that work well and are convenient to use. I’ve never been
this exhausted before. I changed plans and started from scratch numerous times just to get
what I visioned, ignoring the other members’ approval for what’s already done. Finally, the
most awaited day has arrived after postponing it many times. We performed like how we’ve
been practicing for months, no faults, and everything was done well, even the response was
better than we expected. Unfortunately, we lost and I was severely displeased when we
weren’t announced as winners even though we were one of the few performers who did great.
I was devastated not because I think we should’ve done better, but because of the result from
the poor judgement of this competition.
I am not the “perfect” perfectionist but only the lowkey type. I live by the words
“time produces quality” that’s why it takes me a lot of time to finish something, and an
example would be this reflective essay I wasn’t able to pass on time. I pass my projects and
assignments way past the deadline and I’m fine with that as long as I’m completely satisfied
with my work. I was sad about the fact that we didn’t win but winning wouldn’t be that
exciting if I know we lacked and didn’t perform that well. The memory of us losing in this
competition despite delivering a performance with great response from the audience still bugs
me. I may sound biased but I watched and compared our performance from others, I honestly
expected a win from us. Now, what matters is how we felt about our performance. We’re
proud of ourselves for presenting a good show.
We would often hear questions why some even bother making things perfect even if
it’s obviously impossible. To answer the question with my own perceptions, I think those
who do this, including me, are aware of the fact that no matter how much effort we put in,
we’ll never attain perfection, but by pursuing it, we can attain excellence, we can attain better
things, we can try to surpass our limits. When people limit themselves, their works aren’t that
remarkable as compared to those who tried to put effort on making things perfect. The
practice of chasing perfection is also giving your best to avoid future regrets. Each one of us
is filled with so much potential to create extraordinary things, we shouldn’t waste that.
Perfectionism has its weaknesses but from how I use it, I consider it as a strength of mine.
Just like what I have experienced, winning, in the end, wasn’t the point, it’s how I’ve shown
my habit of perfecting things help us deliver a performance we’re proud of where even if we
didn’t win, we carry no regrets.
Same Sex Marriage
The legalization of same sex marriage has been approved by man states and countries
around the world. For years, homosexuals have been fighting for their rights to be treated the
same way as heterosexuals do.
