Physics 242/244 - Jearl Walker Fall 2017

Textbook Halliday Resnick Walker, Fundamentals of Physics --- any edition will do because you will actually do all
your work within the associated online system called WileyPlus. All of the reading material (the entire 10 th edition of the
book) is in WP, so you don’t actually need a paper copy. The email I sent out before school began describes the different
purchase options. In short, you need a code to access WP and the ebook there. The code is good for three semesters. If you
want a permanent download capability, buy the All Access Pack from the bookstore. (This is like keeping a paper book for
reference after you finish a course.) Register or purchase the code at https://www.wileyplus.com . In the little window under
Register, type in our course ID number and then click on Find. If you have already used WileyPlus, the system will recognize
your email and password. Otherwise, you can purchase a WileyPlus code. Once you register in our course section, you can
return to it at WileyPlus.com.

To control the emails from WP On the homepage, go to the upper left and click on Notifications (edit settings). The
first column of boxes allows you to choose which email notices that WP will send you when something in WP is changed.
The advantage of the emails is that you will be notified every time a change is made. The disadvantage is that you might
be flooded with email notices.

Exams There will be an exam almost every week (see the calendar). Each is worth 40 points, is multiple-choice, and will
usually consist of the following:
several decision-type questions based on the lectures and the assigned reading in the book
several calculation-type questions based on the lectures and the assigned homework problems. Usually one of these
questions will be a “modified repeat” of a previously given test question; that is, a question that is very similar
to a previous question but with a change.
An equation sheet is always provided with an exam. A sample is posted in WileyPlus. (You cannot bring the sample to the
exam.) You can load anything you want into the memory of your calculator but you cannot use any communication device
(smartphone, iPad, Google glasses, etc.). You can buy a booklet of my old exams in the bookstore. (I strongly recommend
this --- practice my exams to get ready. The old exams were worth 30 points each. Exams are now worth 40 points each.)
Lots of extra problems are also available behind the Orion button in WileyPlus.

Makeup Exam If you miss an exam, you can take a makeup exam during the last week of class. It will consist of
modified problems from the weekly exams given this semester. However, the makeup exam will count for only one
missed exam, and it will have problems from any of the exams given during the semester. You can also take the makeup
exam to replace your lowest exam score. There is no makeup for the makeup.

Final Exam The final will consist mainly of modified repeats from your weekly exams plus a few problems on the
material in the last week or so of classes, for a total of 20 questions, worth 5 points each. (You will need to go over your
exams this semester, not the homework.)

Collecting points in WileyPlus

Homework problems HW, spread out over two nights: 10 to 12 problems per week. (If you use the Instructor’s Solution
manual, please realize that copying a solution without any understanding means that you will not be able to work the
problem when I give it to you on an exam, where it will be worth 7 times as much.)

Reading questions RQ: Before each lecture, two questions will be due about the material you are to read in the textbook.
They are worth one point each. Sorry but the deadlines are firm and you get only one try at an answer. This is my
attempt to get you to read the text material. (Next year, regardless of your major, you will learn primarily by reading a
textbook.)

Animation questions AN: In every chapter of the WileyPlus version of the book, one of the figures can be transformed into
an animation with voiceover. Sorry but the deadlines are firm and you get only one try at an answer.

Free points: If you are the first person to email me about a significant error in the book, WileyPlus, or the videos (not a
misspelling), you get a free point. You can get up to 5 free points per week, for the material being covered that week.
Examples that count: A link does not work. There is a numerical error in a tutorial or sample problem. The answer
given by WileyPlus has the wrong number or wrong unit. I have an error in one of the videos.
Video tutorials, video sample problems, written sample problems, GO Tuts, hints
Links to these are offered as buttons out of the homework problems.
GO Tutorials (I walk you through the problem up to the last step)
hints (these are not recipes, but a hint to point you in the right direction)
If the links are broken or go to obviously wrong material, you can get free points for reporting the errors.

Finding the book and all the videos and sample problems in WileyPlus
Although lots of things are linked out of the homework problems, you can also see the full menu for each chapter: On the
home page, click on Read, Study & Practice. Use the banner at the top and then pick a chapter. Or use the drop-down
menu to pick a chapter and then scroll down the listing of items for that chapter.

Grades
To determine your course grade, I shall sum your points:
weekly exams: 480 points possible (40 points for each exam)
homework: about 200 points possible
animated illustration questions: about 60 points possible
reading questions: about 60 points possible
final exam: 100 points possible (this can make a letter-grade difference in your course grade)
your average lab grade: 100 points possible
Physics 244 essay requirements: This is an on/off switch. If you complete the essays on time, then the rest of the course
determines you course grade. If you do not complete the essays on time, then you get an automatic F in the course.

About 900 points are possible in the course. Your standing relative to the other students sets your course grade. Usually I
give out approximately the following distribution, but it varies from class to class:
A – top 15% B – top 35% (thus approximately top 50% get A or B) C – 35% D – 10% F – 5%

Is this assignment rigid? No. Once I get a grade distribution, I look for gaps where I can put the grade breaks. I also look
at the final exam score to help me determine which gaps to consider.

Do not miss labs

Department policies: If you miss more than 2 labs, your course grade (not just your lab grade) is automatically F. If
you arrive more than 10 minutes late to your lab session, you must notify the TA immediately. Depending on the particular
experiment/lab section, you may be permitted to participate or attend a later section of the lab. However, this is not
guaranteed and the decision is at the discretion of the lab manager. If these options are not possible, your gradebook will
be marked with a missed lab. There are no make-up labs. If you have a serious problem that interferes with lab, you need
to contact me and the lab manager Tara Peppard (t.peppard@csuohio.edu 216-687-2076) BEFORE the lab begins.

Physics offers extensive free tutoring. The Department pays physics majors to help you.
