INTRODUCTION

Independence brought change in social, cultural and


economical structure of the nation. With that the idea of
National identity was also growing to represent the free spirit
of the nation at the international level.

Thus, the idea of founding national academies of India took


place, which would promote and appreciate different national
arts.

RABINDRA BHAWAN

 Location: Feroz Shah Marg, Mandi House, New delhi
 Area: 3.5 Acres
 Project year: 1961
 Idea: building that would mark the birth centenary of
Rabindranath Tagore
Mandi House Circle and its vicinity is renowned as
the cultural hub of the city. The area has many art
and cultural institutions as well as the city’s
important auditoriums.
Some of the institutions were founded just after
Independence and are still thriving with the same
vigour with which they were started.

Walked on the Copernicus Marg connects to


the Lalit Kala Kendra and Rabindra Bhavan. The MANDI HOUSE CIRCLE

Rabindra Bhavan has a delicate, well-articulated


facade. The building smoothly flows into spaces
blending the inside and the outside. The facade RABINDRA BHAWAN, COPERNICUS MARG
surface had a texture which was pleasing to the
eye.

FORM
• Use of pure geometry in overall form of the building.
Rahman created an interconnected structure free from Gropius’s box shapes
and the Bauhaus factory aesthetics.
• The building is divided into three major blocks- administrative building,
exhibition gallery and theatre. The administrative block, which is the biggest of
all, occupies prominent amount of space on the site.

• The Y - shape is chosen very thoughtfully to cover the maximum area on

The landscape has also served as the
important transitional phase of the building
it is being incorporated in different parts of
the building at different scales with
extended view of sculpture gardens and
displays. Each functional space has its own
way of depicting the circulation depending
upon the activities.it could be vertical,
horizontal ,interlinked.

This building also serves as a memorial museum for studies on Tagore.


It is also the hub for research studies on Rabindranath Tagore. The wide
range of artifacts and personal items of Shri Rabindranath Tagore
attract a large number of visitors. These include old photographs which
show his lifestyle.

Sangeet natak academy and theatre are kept near .

Sangeet Natak Akademi is India's Sahitya Akademi, India’s
national academy for music, dance National Academy of Letters, is
