Power Supply Compatibility

Depending on your appliance configuration, an AC label or a DC label is located on the power supply
of your appliance. When you receive your power supplies and appliance, match the power supply type
label on the power supply to the voltage rating label on the appliance.

Caution
The two power supplies in your appliance must have the same part number. Also,
you cannot mix AC and DC power supplies in your appliance.

Electrical Requirements
The filer must be installed only in restricted areas (dedicated equipment rooms, equipment closets, and
so on.) in accordance with Articles 110-16, 110-17, and 110-18 of the National Electrical Code
ANSI/NFPA 70.
The power supply must be connected to a centralized DC source. The following table lists the electrical
requirements for the DC power supply.

Parameter Rating

DC power supply -40V DC to -60V DC

Typical current per DC input 6.7A at -48V, or 7.7A at -42V

Maximum rated current per DC input 24A at -40V

Inrush current For FAS3000 and Cx300 series power supplies: 20A
peak for 150msec at 48-72V
For DS14 and FAS200 series power supplies: 50A peak
for 15msec for 48-60V.

2 Electrical Requirements
WARNING
Disconnect all power sources before servicing.

AVERTISSEMENT
Débranchez toutes les sources d'énergie avant toutes reparations.

ACHTUNG
For wartung alle anschlusse vom netz trennen.

Wiring Requirements
NetApp does not supply the three-conductor power supply cable that connects to a DC power source.
To connect the DC terminals on the power supply to the DC power source, you must fabricate a three-
conductor cable that meets the following requirements:
Recommended Wire Gauge. 12 AWG with color-coded insulation. Use the color coding scheme
used by the facility in which the appliance is installed.
Ring Terminals. Each wire should be terminated with a ring terminal that accommodates #6 screws
and has the following properties:
◆ Outer ring maximum diameter—0.30 inch
◆ Inner ring—Clearance hole for # 6-32 stud
◆ Insulated grip sleeve
Maximum Distance between Power Supply and Source. The maximum distance for 12 AWG
(2.05 mm diameter metric) copper wire is 47 ft (14.3m) at 25° C [or 38.5 ft (11.7m) at 70° C].
The maximum distance is equal to half the calculated maximum wire length. This is because the wire
length includes the distance from one power supply terminal to the DC bus and back to the power
supply. For example, a maximum distance of 47 feet corresponds to a maximum wire length of 94 feet.
This calculated wire length is based on a 2V allowed input voltage drop and a maximum input current
of 12A (at input voltage Vmin of 40V).

DC Power Supply Connection Requirements

You can use this power supply in both positive and negative ground installations. For example, the DC
power system in telephone central offices (telco facilities) typically use a positive ground and negative
power source (-48V). The steps required to connect the power supplies are described in “Connecting
and Powering On a DC System” on page 5.
For Positive Ground Systems. Connect the power supply terminals in the order listed in the
following table.

Replacing a DC Power Supply 3

Power Supply Terminal to DC Bus Terminal

Ground ( ) System ground ( )

Positive (+) + terminal of the 48V power source

Negative (–) - terminal of the 48V power source

For Negative Ground Systems. Connect the power supply terminals in the order listed in the
following table.
