Forewords
Dear future water and maritime leaders.

With over 17,500 islands make up the nation, Indonesia has a rich history of activities across seas. However, Indonesian ports
have underperformed mainly due to poor infrastructure. Shortcomings in maritime logistics, and operations continue to result
in poor connectivity between the islands, undermining trade and competitiveness. Under the current administration, a more
coordinated network of ports designed to better handle international traffic and streamline more local trade system in 2014,
and beginning to adopt Eco-Smart Port concept.

From this basis, Indonesia needs inspired and capable professionals with a passion for water and maritime – engineers, policy
makers, entrepreneurs, consultants, architects, etc. We invite students and young professionals to investigate key water
problems in their own country and cooperate with professionals experts to develop their own ideas.

The product of this program is your ideas and creativity, it should be a mix of engineering creativity, sound policy-making, and
economic solution. We want you to think in an integrated way, look beyond your discipline. It is important to combine multiple
disciplines because we need input from, various stakeholders to solve water & maritime problems.

Looking forward to meet and learn together with all of you in Surabaya. We hope you will have a great and fun learning
experience!
