EQUILIBRIUM OF PARTICLES

1. Knowing that α = 25°, determine the tension (a) in cable AC, and (b) in cable BC.

2. Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Knowing that α = 30° , determine the tension (a) in cable
AC, (b) in cable BC.

in cable BC.

4. Two cables tied together at C are loaded as shown. Determine the range of values W for which the tension will not
exceed 1050 N. in either cable.
5. Two forces P and Q are applied as shown to an aircraft connection. Knowing that the connection is in equilibrium and
that P = 1.8 kN and Q = 2.3 kN, determine the magnitudes of the forces exerted on the rods A and B.

6. Two forces P and Q are applied as shown to an aircraft. Knowing that the connection is in equilibrium and that the
magnitudes of the forces exerted on rods A and B are FA = 2.7 kN and FB = 1.4 kN, Determine the magnitudes of P and Q.

7. Knowing the portions AC and BC of the cable ACB must be equal determine the shortest length of cable which can be
used to support the load shown if the tension in the cables is not to exceed 725 N.

8. Two cables together at C are loaded as shown. Knowing that the maximum allowable tension in each cable is 900 N,
determine the (a) the magnitude of the largest force P which may be applied at C, (b) the corresponding value of α.

9. Two cables together at C are loaded as shown. Knowing that the maximum allowable tension in each cable is 1300 N
in cable AC and 650 N in cable BC, determine (a) the magnitude of the largest force P which may be applied at C, (b) the
corresponding value of α.
10. Boom AB is supported by cable BC and a hinge at A. Knowing that the boom exerts on pin B a force directed along
the boom and that the tension in rope BD is 300 N, determine (a) the value of α for which the tension in cable BC is as
small as possible, (b) the corresponding value of the tension.

11. A tower guy wire is anchored by means of a bolt at A. The tension in the wire is 2500 N. Determine (a) the
components Fx, Fy, Fz of the force acting on the bolt, (b) the angles Өx, Өy, Өz defining the direction of the force.

12. Determine (a) the x, y, and z components of the 0.9 kN force, (b) the angles Өx, Өy, Өz that the force with the
coordinate axes.

13. . Determine (a) the x, y, and z components of the 1.9 kN force, (b) the angles Өx, Өy, Өz that the force with the
coordinate axes.
14. To stabilize a tree partially uprooted in a storm, cables AB and AC are attached to the upper trunk of the tree and
then are fastened to steel rods anchored in the ground. Knowing that the tension in cable AB is 4.2 kN, determine (a) the
components of the force exerted by this cable on the tree, (b) the angles Өx, Өy, Өz that the force forms with axes at A
which are parallel to the coordinate axes.

15. To stabilize a tree partially uprooted in a storm, cables AB and AC are attached to the upper trunk of the tree and
then are fastened to steel rods anchored in the ground. Knowing that the tension in cable AB is 3.6 kN, determine (a) the
components of the force exerted by this cable on the tree, (b) the angles Өx, Өy, Өz that the force forms with axes at A
which are parallel to the coordinate axes.
