ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The Drug Administration and Control Authority (DACA) of Ethiopia would like to extind its
gratitude to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for meeting all the financial
expenses associated with the printing of this list.
1
INTRODUCTION
The provision of complete health care necessitates the availability of safe, effective and affordable
drugs of the required quality, in adequate quantity at all times. Moreover, the available drugs must
be prescribed, dispensed and used rationally.
The Ethiopian drug policy which was issued on November, 1993 has reaffirmed the commitment
of the Ethiopian Government to this principle. To realize this objective it would be necessary to
select drugs which are required for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and/or mitigation of
diseases which affect the majority of the Ethiopian people and classify them by level of Drug
Retail out lets.
The list of Drugs for Community Pharmacy Retail is now revised for the second time in the light
of the above principle and also on the basis of the latest development in the fields of Medicine and
Pharmacy.
Guided with this principle this list is prepared with consultation and discussions made with
professionals.
The presentation of this list alone does not solve the country’s problem in distribution, dispensing
and use of drugs, unless all the concerned bodies commit themselves to its full implementation.
Therefore, this list will serve as useful guide for distribution, and dispensing of drugs for
Community Pharmacy in the country.
