I. Introduction

José Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba,

Philippines. Rizal became a national hero for a reason. He was a

reformist, a novelist, a poet, journalist, an ophthalmologist,

and revolutionary. He sparked the 1896 revolution against the

Spaniards. He gave importance to education, our freedom,

promoting peace and equality, being proud of our Filipino

heritage, and many more. These contributions awakened the

Filipino patriotism and paved the way for Philippine Revolution.

Moreover, his writings were living proofs that “The pen is

mightier than the sword”.

Learning about Jose Rizal is essential to anyone who has

ever experienced colonialism. Rizal was one of the first

opponents of such regulations and he was both outspoken and

actively participating in different manifestations to denounce

the injustice.

In this generation it is important to study the life, works

and teachings of Jose Rizal because of his input towards the

independence of Philippines. He chose to fight for his country

through knowledge and the power of letters. He noticed the

continued suffering of his countrymen at the hands of the

Spaniards and sought to put an end to this situation. He decided

to improve on his personal studies to acquire knowledge that he

would later on pass to his people through novels and poems. His

famous novels the "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo"

pointed out the issues that the true citizens of Philippines

faced under Spanish rule and the need to take decisive action to

liberate them from oppression. His actions resonated well with

that of his countrymen and eventually the people decided to rise

up and defend their rights and freedom. This is why it is

relevant to study Rizal.

And we, the youth should be awed at the magnitude of his

expertise and at the wide range of his fields of interest

especially his works that beams us today.

II. Teachings of Rizal

We Filipinos learned a lot to our heroes especially Rizal

because of his teachings that enlighten every individuals. One

of this is on Education, the degree of importance that Rizal

attributed to education. Rizal’s ideas on education was relevant

to the Philippines then and now, as it is relevant in any other

country where people desire to improve the quality of their

lives.

The next teachings of Rizal that we learned is on

Individual Freedom by quoted words of Rizal as “All men are born

equal, naked and without shackles.” And this teaching is true

not only in the independence of a country, but also in the

freedom of individuals.

José Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, played a crucial role in the

political history of the Philippines that enlighten us, drawing

from experience, the conventions of the nineteenth-century

novel, and the ideals of European liberalism, Rizal offered up a

devastating critique of a society under Spanish colonial rule.

And also the El Filibusterismo that is a sequel to Noli Me

Tangere.

On Religion, Rizal’s religious ideas were expressed in his

letters. This idea is the basis of the freedom of religion, the

freedom of religious belief and the freedom to act in accordance

with one’s religious belief that is enshrined in our laws.

On Racism, We, who now live in a different time and

different social environment, know full well that the idea of a

superior race is not only abhorrent, but is also a blatant

falsity.

The teachings of Rizal which I have mentioned and briefly

restated on what makes those ideas different and significant to

us Filipinos is that we have reason to be proud because those

ideas were restated, reinvented, advocated, and applied by a man

with whom we share a common heritage.

III. Application

In these times of crisis we Filipinos would do well to

look back at the virtues of Rizal abided by to help us put

meaning to our own struggles for survival. And today, we

Filipinos should acknowledge Rizal because he leads us to this

generation to continue and perchance finish what he began which

is the formation of a nation where every Filipino is truly free.

In this generation, I believe we should prove that we are

the hope for the future because there are a lot of influences to

us youth, especially the existence of technologies and we almost

forgotten the teachings of our hero, and as we learn we continue

to help each other especially to the build unity for our society

that we have right now and we should also owe Rizal for this

contribution because he enlighten us. And we Filipinos,

especially to us the youth should spread the teachings of Rizal

especially to the people who do not recognized him.
