Globalization and Challenges; What are the globalization’s contemporary

issues?
Definitions of Globalization: A Comprehensive Overview and a Proposed
Definition
Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. “economic liberalization”
ii. Falling down like rain on poor innocent locals, diminishing their
autonomy and threatening their identity.
iii. Globalization is evolutionary

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that

globalization is only limited to the idea of having improved technology
within reach for regular consumers. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that besides
technology, globalization covers more topics and that the idea of
globalization by itself is very broad. Globalization covers topics not only
limited to the advancement in technology, but also how it affects the
economy, the politics, and the culture of one nation involved. I also
realized that technology comes hand in hand with globalization as it
helps to make connections with other participating nations easier and
faster, similar to how Swedish journalist Thomas Larsson defined
globalization.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that

globalization is only about connecting to the world and that it doesn’t
have much effect to the society. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that globalization is
something serious, that it’s a phenomenon that can affect both the
government and the society. Globalizations also has its own pros and
cons – it can be beneficial for us, however there are some things that
are being sacrificed when implementing this. There are people who
support the idea of globalization while others are against this. Some
people like globalization as it gives the people more opportunities,
however some say that we are not yet equipped enough to compete
with other countries which will only make things more difficult. Also, some
others say that we should first focus on our nationalism and consolidation
of state power before branching out our connections to other countries.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that
globalization and connecting to other countries will only prove how
westernized the Philippines has become and how it shows our colonial
mentality brought about the long time of being colonized by other
nations. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize that globalization is not entirely negative. Globalization
opens doors for our country, giving us more opportunities both in our
country and abroad. It also helps grow the economy of a country, a
known example would be how the Chinese economy grew when they
started connecting to other countries. Globalization also bring us to be
competitive not just in a national, but in a global scale, wherein we are
able to keep up with the global trends.

iv. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that

globalization is something specific and can be defined universally with
one definition. When the term “globalization” is uttered or said,
everyone can understand what it means. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that the term
“globalization” is a very vague word. The topic on globalization is very
broad and the term by itself has a variety of definitions one can relate
to it. By looking at the concept of globalization from different
perspectives, one can formulate different definitions of it based on how
one looks at it. This can also be one of the reasons why it is one of the
popular topics in debate. In order to understand what really
globalization is, it is essential for one to have an open mind and have a
broad perspective on different things. In general, globalization is a
complex topic that requires different perspectives in order to fully grasp
its essence and meaning. Looking at it shallowly and not being open to
new ideas related to it will make understanding it difficult and uneasy.
Most definitions relate to the political, economic, and social aspects of
the country; however these definitions cannot summarize the entirety of
the concept of globalization.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas
you want more explanations about?
i. How do we know when we are ready and well equipped to globalize
and connect with other countries?
ii. Does globalization really help the country greatly or will it just make
things more difficult for the people, especially those in the lower
sector of society?
iii. Is there one definition of globalization that can unify all of its other
definitions and make it easier for people to understand?
iv. Is globalization really helpful or does it just create to more problems
within the society?
