LEARNING ACTION CELL (LAC) PLAN ON THE UTILIZATION OF THE WHOLE BRAIN LITERACY
AND TEACHING APPROACH/ EXEMPLARS
AUGUST 2019

A. Rationale

DepEd fully supports the continuing professional development of its teaching personnel based on
the principle of lifelong learning and DepEd’s commitment to the development of teachers’ potential
aimed towards their success in the profession as stated in DepEd Order No. 35, series 2016 known as
The Learning Action Cell as a K to 12 Basic Education Program School-Based Continuing Professional
Development Strategy for the Improvement of Teaching and Learning. In connection to this, Sto.
Tomas Elementary School and Cabaroan Elementary School propose a Clustered-based School LAC
Plan on the Utilization of the Whole Brain Literacy and Teaching Exemplars.
The Whole Brain Learning is due to research by Dr. Roger W. Sperry in the 1960s on the left-
brain right-brain divide, where it was discovered that left brain thinking is verbal and analytical, while
right brain is non-verbal and intuitive. In addition, it was also discovered that both side of the brain do
not function independently, but work together frequently to solve complex problems. This led to the
thinking that by training (from a young age) the right brain, along with the left-brain, a child will be
able to fully develop his/her learning capacity. Dr. Sperry received a Nobel Prize for his discovery ion
1981.
The Whole Brain Learning approach emphasizes equal focus on both sides of brain. This is
contrary to the traditional classroom curriculum, where the focus is solely on the left-brain (e.g.
mathematics, language, analytical, facts). There is also an assumption that the brain is the most active
(and hence optimal for learning) between newborn- 16 years old, which is why the Whole Brain
Learning approach should be introduced at a young age.
In the Whole Brain Learning Classroom, the main focus will be to exercise the right-brain, and
such, incorporates activities are aimed at training the right-brain.
iteracy and Teaching Exemplar.

The proposed Clustered-based School LAC Plan on the Utlization of Whole Brain Literach\y and
Teaching Exemplars is to be done every Thursday at 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon beginning July 1, to
July 22, 2019. The LAC topics are relevant towards improving pupils’ performance in all areas as stated
in AIP/SIP.

B. Overview

The LAC Session will be done this month is a continuation of the activities for July 2019. This is to
provide time for teachers have a deeper understanding of the Whole Brain Learning System and that
the teachers must know the importance of these in daily lessons. The launching of the Whole Brain
Lesson Exemplars during the Ilocos Norte Educational Transformation Summit on May 2019, that the
SDOIN provides deep and great concern to the learners. These will be utilized in classroom instruction
to create critical and creative minds of learners. The participants are the 9 teachers and 1 school
principal of Sto. Tomas Elementary School and Cabaroan Elementary School led by the LAC leader or
the school principal.
C. Objectives

At the end of the Clustered-based School Learning Action Cell (LAC) 90% of the participants shall
have:
1. Identify the Self-Mastery Skills of Learning Endstates to be developed among learners by
grade and by subject.
2. Enumerate various strategies in the development of a particular lesson using the WBLS
exemplars/Lesson Plans.
3. Select appropriate ICT-based instructional materials in teaching-learning process.
4. Develop a demonstration lesson using the WBLS.
5. Demonstrate a WBLS lesson.

Sto. Tomas/Cabaroan Elementary School with seven (9) teachers, have embraced the
importance of having LAC Session, so they will conduct their School Learning Action Cell (SLAC)
Sessions every Thursday of the month at 3:00-5:00pm to deal on issues that concern them and their
pupils. This is a way of helping teachers grow professionally for the topics. Discussion are very useful
and the needs of the time for the K to 12 learners. There is group discussion, brainstorming,
presentation and sharing of best practices to help address the problems on the WBLS implementation.
The LAC Session that will be tackled will barely be on the use of the WBLS exemplars for effective
teaching-learning.
