FUTURE TENSE

A. SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE

a. Pattern
1. Bentuk “Will”
• Positive: Subject + Will + Verb1 + Object
• Negative: Subject + Will not (won’t) + Verb1 + Object
• Interrogative: Will + Subject + Verb1 + Object
2. Bentuk “Be going to”
• Positive: Subject + are,am,is + going to + Verb1 + Object
• Negative: Subject + are,am,is + not + going to + Verb1 + Object
• Interrogative: are,am,is + Subject + going to + Verb1 + Object

b. Usage
1. Bentuk “Will”
• “Will” often suggests that a speaker will do something for someone else and it
is usually used in promises.
E.g. I will call you when I arrive (promise)
Donna : I am hungry
Danny : I will make some fried rice (doing something for someone)

 • “Will” to express a prediction
E.g. Azkiya will be the next princess
2. Bentuk “Be going to”
• “be going to” expresses that something is a plan. It doesn’t matter whether the
plan is realistic or not.
E.g. Hilda is going to spend her vacation in Lombok
• “be going to” to express a prediction
E.g. Azkiya is going to be the next princess
3. Adverb of time
The simple future adverb of time such as tomorrow, next .... , later, etc.

CONTOH SOAL

1. You .... to London next year if you are the best student in class.
A. will go
B. is going to go
C. is going
D. has gone
E. has been going
Pembahasan:
Jawaban A, karena ada adverb of time next year yang menyatakan masa yang akan datang
dan lebih dikuatkan lagi dengan tipe promise sentence (If you are the best student in
class) didalam soal.

B. FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

a. Pattern
1. Positive
Subject + Will be + Verb-ing + Object
2. Negative
Subject + Will + not + be + Verb-ing + Object
3. Interrogative
was,were + Subject + Verb-ing + Object

b. Usage
Future continuous uses a spesific time as follows:
E.g. I will meet you tomorrow (simple future)
I will be searching you tomorrow at 7 AM. (future continuous)
Pada future continuous memiliki waktu yang lebih spesifik (7 PM).

CONTOH SOAL

1. I .... for you next month morning at 6 PM in London.

A. will wait
B. will be waiting
C. am waiting
D. wait
E. is waiting
Pembahasan:
Jawaban B, karena waktu yang spesifik terdapat di dalam soal (morning at 6 PM).

C. FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

a. Pattern
1. Positive
Subject + Will have + Verb3 + Object
2. Negative
Subject + Will + not + have + Verb3 + Object
3. Interrogative
Will + Subject + have + Verb3 + Object

b. Usage
We use the future perfect tense to express an activity that will be completed before another
time or event in the future.

Untuk menguasai tenses ini sangat mudah, kita hanya fokus terhadap ciri-ciri dari tenses
ini, yaitu adverb of time yang mirip dengan simple future (tomorrow, next .... , tonight,
etc.) tapi dengan penambahan by / by the time.

 E.g. I will visit you tomorrow
By the time you arrive, I will have visited you
I will have given you the prize by next week

Jelas bahwa future perfect continuous fungsinya adalah menjamin sesuatu akan terjadi
sebelum sesuatu yang lain terjadi di masa depan. Agar lebih jelasnya mari perhatikan
simulasi soal berikut:

CONTOH SOAL

1. “Azkiya .... you by the time you enroll to the university.”

A. will meet
B. meet
C. is meeting
D. will have met
E. will be meeting
Pembahasan:
Jawaban D, karena ada earmarks of future perfect “by the time”. Maka, sudah sangat jelas
jawabannya adalah will+have+verb3.

D. FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

a. Pattern
1. Positive
Subject + Will have + been + Verb-ing + Object
2. Negative
Subject + Will + not + have + been +Verb-ing + Object
3. Interrogative
Will + Subject + have + been + Verb-ing + Object

b. Usage
We use the future perfect tense to express an activity that will be completed before
another time or event in the future but it emphasizes the duration. Pada dasarnya sama
dengan future perfect tense, hanya tenses ini lebih menekankan pada waktu (durasi) dan
saat terjadinya, perhatikan contoh berikut:

 E.g. Laila will have learned English by the time you learn it
Laila will have been learning English for 2 weeks by the time you learn it

Berdasarkan contoh di atas, perbedaannya hanya di penambahan waktunya saja, walaupun

keduanya sama-sama menggunakan by the time/by.

Untuk lebih mematangkan bab ini, mari perhatikan simulasi soal sebagai berikut:

CONTOH SOAL

1. Erlina .... on her report for 6 hours by the time I visit you.
A. will have been working
B. had been working
C. is working
D. will have worked
E. work
Pembahasan:
Jawaban A, karena selain ada adverb of time by the time ditambah dengan waktu yang
lebih spesifik 6 hours, maka sudah jelas menggunakan future perfect continuous.

2. The president .... by the time I come to the disaster victims.

A. has been working
B. will have visited
C. is visiting
D. visit
E. will be visiting
Pembahasan:
Jawaban B, karena hanya ada by the time saja maka menggunakan future perfect tense.
