Q2. Who should be involved in the Mission Statement exercise and why?
Since mission statement is the very reason for the existence of the firm and it provides direction
for the strategies and the way business is to be conducted, it should consider all the stakeholders
of the firm and the business.
It should involve all the 9 board members and the division heads.
Board, since it is the board members who need to agree on the change so that all the future
strategies and decisions may be aligned accordingly.
The division heads so that they have a sense of ownership towards the organisation motives and
goals, and thus, simplify and communicate it down to the bottom line as well as align the
operational goals and objectives with the business’s purpose. It would then serve as a motivator
and might help in reducing the inter-divisional and intra-divisional conflicts.
How should D.W. go about the exercise?
Since there is some internal displeasure in promotion of D.W as the CEO, and since there is some
hostility among the Giles brothers, D.W. should leverage on his relationship with Larry. Since the
change he wants to bring in business involves change in the fundamentals of the way the business
has been functioning, he needs to first take into confidence his father by convincing him of the
cons of the existing practices and the need for change. Also, he needs to attempt to discuss and
involve the Giles brothers (before the board meeting) and try to gain their confidence. Apart from
the internal members of the board, he should also individually schedule informal meets with the
other board members and convince the need and take their ideas on the same before the board
meeting.
