CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction

This section explains how the research questions would be investigated and why some

particular methods and techniques would be employed. It also describes the sampling

procedure, the various issues in the data collection and the choice of data analysis technique.

3.2 Research design

Research design is the blue print and outline on how a research is to be carried out

particularly how it relates to methodology. It is also a program that guides a researcher in the

process of collecting, presenting, analyzing and interpreting data. In this research, survey

research design will be used as its aim is to provide answers to specific questions with a view

of producing quantitative data.

3.3 Population of study

The population of this study is the totality of both staff and customers of First Bank,

Owode, Oyo Town. There are 20 members of staff working in this bank and about 16,000

customers been distributed in various local governments in Oyo Town. These includes:

Afijio, Atiba, Oyo West and Oyo East Local Government,

3.4 Sample and sample selection

It is would have been more interesting to investigate every element within the

population but due to certain constraints that might be encountered in the course of this

research it wouldn’t be possible. Therefore, few of the elements that are supposed to be truly

represented would be selected for investigation. As it has been observed, there are 16,000

customers in which 400 customers and the entire 20 members of staff which include the
management, regular staff, attaché and clerk will be investigated. In all 420 questionnaires

will be distributed in the course of this research work.

3.5 Sampling design techniques

Popularly, there are two basic sampling designs which are probability and non-

probability. Each of these two have sub divisions under them which are, probability {simple

random sampling, stratified sampling, systematic sampling, area/cluster sampling and multi-

stage sampling} while non-probability {snowball sampling, judgmental and

convenience/accidental sampling}.

Due to the large size of the population, a total of four hundred respondents will be

selected from the customers, along with the twenty members of staff from First Bank,

Owode, Oyo Town. However, the stratified sampling selection would be used to select

different categories of customers as long standing between 10-20 years and the recent

customers between 5-10 years.

3.6 Sample frame and sample size

Sample frame is from where samples are selected from for investigation. It is the list

that contains the targeted population from where samples are to be selected for study. While

sample size is the number of elements that are drawn from the population to make them truly

representative of the target population from where they were drawn. All the 20 members of

staff would be investigated while the population size of the customers would be drawn using

the Yaro Yamnane formular

N=
n
1+n (e)2
Where N= population size (16,000), n= number of sample (16,000), e= error of 5%

N= 16,000
1+16,000(0.05)2

N= 16,000
1+16,000(0.0025)

N= 16,000
40.0025

=399.97500

= 400

3.7 Methods of data collection

In the course of this research work, survey research method is being used to collect

information from the respondents, and under this survey research method, a well-structured

and clarified questionnaire will be used which would be administered to the staff and

customers of First Bank, Owode, Oyo Town. The questionnaire would be administerd on

different working days in order to have full access to their staffs and the randomly selected

customers.

3.8 Sources of data collection

In carrying out research, there are two main sources of getting data. These are primary

and secondary sources of data. The sources of data for this research work would be both

primary and secondary sources of data collection. The primary sources of data would be

gotten from the various administered questionnaires and the interview questions while the

secondary data is gotten from various existing records and information concerning the

research work. This would enable the researcher have good and reliable result at the end.
3.9 Instruments of data collection

There are several instrument used in carrying out research but in carrying out this

research, the researcher would be using questionnaire to carry out and collect the necessary

data for the study. A set of questions will be constructed so has to get necessary information

required from both the staffs and the customers of the case study.

The questionnaire will be divided into two sections: A and B. section A is basically

focusing on the demographic data of the respondents such as age, salaries, customers or staffs

and marital status. Section B will be dealing with various statements on the variables of this

study which enable the study to answer the research questions and it will take the format of

Rensis Likert. It will have four optional responses vis-à-vis, strongly agree {SA}, agree {A},

strongly disagree {SD}, disagree {D} and neutral {N}.

3.10 Test for validity and reliability

To ensure the validity of this research in the process of carrying it out, it would be

ensure that the questionnaire been used is basically focusing on the main purpose and

objectives of this study with the help of experts in the field of measurement and evaluation.

The researcher would make sure that before the dissemination of the questionnaire, it would

have been given to various expertises’ to go through it for proper analysis so as to detect any

lapses. Also, it would be ensure that the questionnaire items are designed in such a way that it

will yield responses to the research questions.

This research question would be very reliable because many pretest would be done on

it and it would be ensure that there is no conjuring of number where there is known. This

work being a quantitative data would therefore speak for itself.

3.11 Methods of data analysis

The data gotten from the returned questionnaires would be analyse based on the

response of the respondents. There are two basic analysis methods: inferential and descriptive

analysis method and a researcher can either use any one of it or can choose anyone of them.

In this research work, the study will adopt descriptive analysis method using frequency

distribution table and simple percentage, while after this, the data will be presented which

will provide basis for interpretation, conclusion and recommendation to find solutions to the

research problem.
