E-journals
• Because they are published frequently they are the best source of current
information.

• Dedicated to a specific field of study e.g. electronic engineering, music technology

• Current events are usually discussed in a journal before they become the subject
of a book.

• Contain information on the latest trends, products, research and theories.

E-Databases
• In contrast to search engines, bibliographic
databases have a different scope both in
regard to the subject covered and the
functionality implemented.

• In addition to basic bibliographic information,

they may include abstracts, full texts, citations
and other valuable descriptors of content.

Citation impact

• Citations are increasingly used for the purpose

of evaluating research.

• Bibliometric indicators:
– Impact Factor
– h-index

BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 38

Journal Impact Factor

• The Impact Factor is designed for assessing

journals indexed by Web of Knowledge.
• The Impact Factor is a measure of how often
an article in a particular journal has been cited
on average per year.
• For journals within the same subject category,
the factor indicates the journal’s relative
influence or impact.

BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 39

Calculating a journal’s Impact Factor

• To retrieve the Impact Factor of a given

journal, open the database Journal Citation
Reports (JCR) .
• The Impact Factor (IF) is based on the number
of citations (A) in the current year to items
published in the previous 2 years and the
number of articles (B) published in the same
two years: IF=A/B.

BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 40

The grey shaded areas indicate the citations received for articles
published in 2009 (light grey) and 2010 (dark grey).
Only citations in 2011 contribute to the Impact Factor for

Observing journal trends

On an annual basis the value of the Impact Factor is re-calculated. It

represents the current value and enables observing journals over time.
The diagram shows the performance trend of our example journal.
The value of the Impact Factor lies around 5, which means that on average articles
have been cited five times a year.
In spite of year 2010, the journal has maintained a consistent performance over the
last seven years.

BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 42

Alternative journal indicators
• Immediate or long lasting impact
• Immediacy Index
• Journal Cited Half-Life
• Advanced journal impact measures
– SNIP, the Source Normalized Impact per Paper, based on data
from Scopus

BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 43

H-index

• The h-index is a measure of the total importance

of a researcher measured by how often she or he
gets cited.
• A scientist has index h if h of his/her Np papers
have at least h citations each, and the other
(Np − h) papers have no more than h citations
each (Hirsch, 2005).
• The index combines both an author’s scientific
production (publications) and impact (number of
citations).
BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 44
H-index
• When exploring the literature of our research
field, the h-index may give as a picture of the
impact of individual researchers and research
groups.
• We may retrieve the h-index in e.g. Web of
Science, Scopus and Google Scholar.

BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 45

Calculating someone’s h-index
Step 1: Search for author Popescu in a given database
The figure illustrates the search result of author
Popescu in an arbitrary database.
The figure also indicates all citing publications
(counting-lines) within the same database. In our
example author Popescu has 10 publications
(a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j). NP = 10.
Step 2: Sort publications by decreasing
number of citations

Step 3: Fulfil the condition: h of the

publications have at least h citations
each
h = max(Rank) provided Cit ≥ Rank
According to our example 4 publications have received more than 4 citations. These are
publications c,i,a,g. The remaining (NP – h) publications have not more than h citations
each. According to our example, the remaining 6 publications (f,h,d,j,b,e) have not more
than 4 citations each.
Result:
BELARUSPopescu’s h-index is equal to 4.LNSS_ESP_M6_2016
TRAINING_MINSK 46
Example: H-index retrieved in Web of
Science, Scopus and Google Scholar
• Step 1: Search for the author, making sure
you cover all possible signatures.
• Step 2: Go to the statistics available in the
three databases
• Web of Science: Citation Report
• Scopus: View Citation Overview
• Google Scholar: Scholarometer

BELARUS TRAINING_MINSK LNSS_ESP_M6_2016 99

Basic principles of Open Access

• Research material is made freely available on the

Why self-archive?

• Research will be available from one database on the

Internet that is accessible for everyone, everywhere

• Secure and permanent archiving of research material
Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) for each document

Why Open access?

Not everyone has access. Depends on money and

location
Open access enables global communication and
collaboration

Research paid by society
should be freely available

Open access is important for scientific research for
many reasons,
the most obvious being that it democratizes access
to scientific information so that
quality research is not only available to a handful of
universities who can afford high publishing costs.

However, OA impacts these Paid databases are
groups from an increasingly doing the
information literacy thinking for patrons,
perspective as well. This suggesting spelling
is because OA journals changes and topics,
are not always as user- suggesting similar
friendly as paid articles, allowing patrons
databases, they are not to do one click search
always easy to find. from references, etc.

OA sources are not always this intuitive, and so patrons are

basically left to do their own thinking.
For example, comparing Directory of Open Access Journals
(DOAJ.org) to other paid databases, DOAJ.org lacks the ability to
limit by date, by subject heading, by language.

• Can/should universities/libraries
engage in the construction of an
infrastructure for OA-content – are
they collectively able to do that, or
should one expect commercial
solutions for this – as it is the case for
the traditional subscription based
content (subscription agents, discovery
services, ILS-providers, database
vendors etc) ?
