Today’s In-Building Voice and Data Solu$ons

•  Distributed Antenna Systems [DAS]

Provide mul$-carrier networks in the largest venues, such
as stadiums and airports
•  Single Operator Small Cells
Provide coverage for a single carrier in a building with no
mobile recep$on or to support buildings with sporadic or
poor coverage. Mobile operator sponsored solu$on
•  MulB Operator Small Cells
Support emerging need for mul$ carrier in-building
solu$ons. Neutral Host or Enterprise sponsored solu$on.

Trends around In-Building Wireless Networks
Several key trends contribute to the need for improved
in-building wireless networks:
•  The expansion of smartphones BYOD usage in enterprise environments means that mulB-operator
mobile service is now a mission-cri$cal requirement
•  Changes in building construc$on standards (esp. LEED) that prevent outdoor coverage from
penetra$ng indoors
•  Eighty percent of traffic is generated indoors for MNOs based on Small Cell Forum research and
data from the Cisco VNI survey (2016)
•  Quality wireless service has become the expected norm, including inside offices, in hospitality
environments, retail environments or any place of entertainment
•  Venue owners have realized the value and importance of their wireless rights leading to
uncertainty in the business model

Support Middleprise with Mul$-Operator Small Cells

•  Middle to small venues are challenge to support the high overhead cost for DAS
•  Typical small soluBons can be lower cost
–  but you need to deploy 4X infrastructure to support 4 MNOs
–  can be less CapEx in some cases, but may lead to higher OpEx than DAS.
•  A mulBple operator small cell soluBon can provide the best of both worlds
•  MulB-operator small cell soluBons must meet several challenges
–  Determine what spectrum could be used
•  Use spectrum from a “donor” MNO
•  Use Neutral Spectrum like CBRS or MulteFire
–  Support traffic demands for all operators
–  Support virtual EPC and interoperability with all MNOs
–  Develop business models to support deployments

ViperTM :
-  4G range of Access Points (APs)
-  Virtualised Access Control Gateways
-  Virtualised Small Cells as a Service
-  SUMOTM capability providing Neutral Host
controlled resource and capacity sharing

Small Cells in the “Middleprise”

•  Economically viable in-building solu$ons have become cri$cal

•  Mobile carriers expand and densify their 4G LTE networks to meet the
ever-increasing capacity requirements
•  MNOs begin planning 5G access solu$ons
•  Key market trends and technologies enabling evolu$on of small cells
•  The cost advantages of neutral host access
•  Cost-effec$ve Radio Access Network (RAN) sharing
•  Underserved ‘Middleprise’ customers to ‘take control of their own
des$ny’ in geqng high quality cellular service into their premises
•  ViperTM solu$on provides CapEx and OpEx savings of up to 80%

Audience Poll Ques$on #3

What spectrum is most likely to be used for in-building cellular?

1.  Separately licenced by each operator
2.  Donor spectrum by lead operator
3.  CBRS or similar lightly licenced
4.  Unlicensed (e.g. MulteFire)
