Chapter Three _Inspection Chapter Three Inspection 3. 1 Commodity Inspection 3. 1. 1 Preparation 1. First lay the pipe on rotatable rack to make it convenient for cleaning and inspection; 2. Remove thread protectors, clean the thread grease or filth; a. Use pipe wrench to remove protector, be careful not to bump the thread with other stuff after the protector is removed; b. Use compressed air to blow the inner pipe thoroughly (from box to pin), remove dirt and scale; c. Clean the joint part according to one of the methods below. 1) Nonmetal brush and detergent or wood chips; 2) Steam cleaning (or water spray) and wash; 3) Use rotating nonmetal scrubbing brush (with water spray) ond wash. 4. Blow clean or wipe clean the thread end and intemal shoulder. Get rid of the remaining solvent and moisture, ce. Wash protector and exchange the broken ones. Note: 1. Do not use metal brush. When using powered brush, be careful to avoid any damage to metal seal parts. 2. Do not use diesel oil as detergent (if use diesel oil, brush thread compound after inspection, because thread compound isn’t easy to adhere). 3. 1. 2 Thread inspection 1. Surface smoothness of the thread: the thread part shall not have burrs, scratches, steps and other defects which will destroy the integrity of thread. But slight defects (such as previously mentioned burrs and scratches) or pits covering less than 1/4 circumference of the whole thread, use file and 240 screen mesh sand paper to polish back and forth less than 30 times, then use sponge stone to refine. It will be " Chapter Three Inspection accepted if the defects could be removed. 2Pin and box thread end deformation or dent: not permitted. 3 Thread galling or wearing of the reused pipes: if the reused pipes have any seratches and defects mentioned in item 1, It can be used after being repaired with file. 3. 1. 3 Seal surface visual inspection: (Mainly part C, secondly part B) WSP-IT Structure of Pin thread 1 The main seal face part C, end B shall not have any visual axial scratch and pull damage. Use sponge stone to polish several times to eliminate slight scratches, the part will be regarded as accepted after fill milling. 2 Local bulge on face A not extending to the inner pipe can be accepted after repaired by file. 3 Even slight compression deformation on the main seal face is not accepted. 4 If reused pipes are seen to be elliptical or have enlarged deformation under visual observation, it shall be considered as disqualified. 3. 1. 4 Others Burrs on pin end face: there shall not be any burrs on both inside and outside of pipe end. But if it can be repaired on site with thin file and sponge stone, it will Chapter Three Inspection be accepted. 3. 1. 5 Surface treatment Box thread end must have a through phosphate coating, otherwise it shall be considered as disqualified; the main seal face shall be phosphorized even after repair. 3. 1. 6 Thread tolerance and inspection standard ‘As thread size varies according to tubing and casing size, the tolerance may vary as well. Please refer to the order requirement for details. The table listed below is the thread tolerance requirement of ©177.8mm casing for your reference. So these tolerances will be set as acceptance check reference for the two parities, supplier and client shall negotiate when conflict, oceurs. 3. 1. 7 Visual inspection on thread 1. From the pipe end, within the minimal length range of integral thread(Lc), the thread shall have no obvious avulsions, cuts, abrasions, shoulders or defects that will destroy the continuity of thread. For accidental surface scratches, slight bulge and surface abnormity which do not affect the continuity of thread can be judged as, harmless, so that these defects shall not be treated as rejection criterion. As acceptance requirement, the most important consideration should be: ensure there is no significant bulge which may shell off the protection layer of coupling or damage the joggle surface and allow manual finishing of thread surface. The non complete thread is allowed to have defects, which the depth shall not be ‘more than 12.5% of the stipulated wall thickness, allow grinding to eliminate defects in this area. There is also possibility to meet dirt and slight rust whici: might not be harmful, the most important thing is to eliminate any corrosion product outside the thread. It is allowed to have two black threads within Lc range. But the length of black thread shall not exceed the 25% of the pipe diameter. 2. Deformation and scratches on pin and box thread. No any damage and deformation caused during transportation are permitted on pin and box thread. Its not allowed to grind or file to eliminate the pits caused by scratches. 3. Coupling ‘There shall be no coupling surface treatment plating film on exfoliate. Slight color change is acceptable since it does not affect application. 3. 1. 8 Material requirement 1. Chemical composition: the chemical composition shall conform to the material Chapter Three _Inspection requirement of related steel grade in API SCT standard. The detailed composition will be provided by in quality certificate. 2. Mechanical property: mechanical property shall conform to the requirement of API SCT standard. The detailed results will be provided in quality certificate. 3. 1. 9 Technical requirement for pipe body Diameter, wall thickness, surface quality, straightness, drifting, hydrostatic test and NDT of pipe body shall meet the requirements of API SCT. 3. 2 On-site inspection First of all calibrate all the gauges before inspection. 1. Check if the pipe is bended, lay the casing on steel stacks, push manually, the ‘ones which do not roll shall be rejected. 2. Check the thread carefully, reject the pipe if the thread is broken before good repair. : 3. Check the coupling, coupling with any deformation shall be rejected. 4, Check and make sure each coupling makeup is tight. 5. Seal face inspection shall be especially careful when inspecting the pipes with damaged protector. If defects can be discovered by eye inspection or can be felt when moving fingers on seal face, the pipe shall be rejected.
