A lot is bounded by 3 straight sides A, B, C. AB is N. 45° E, 95 m. long and AC is due

East, 88 m. long. From point D, 43 m. from A on side AB a dividing line runs to E which
is on side CA. The area ADE is to be 1/7 of the total area of the lot.

1) Determine the distance DE.

2) Determine the bearing of side BC.
3) Determine the distance AE.

Solution:

1) Distance DE:

( AE)(43)sin 45° 1 ( 95 )( 88 ) sin 45 °

= AE=27.77 m.
2 7 2

Using Cosine Law:

(DE)² = (43)²+(27.77)² - (2(43)(27.77)Cos45 °

DE = 30.52 m.
2) Bearing of line BC:

BC = 70.33 m.

Using Sine Law:

95 70.33
=
sinθ sin 45°

θ= 72°46‘
α= 90°-72°46‘
α= 17°14‘
Bearing of BC = S, 17°14‘ E.

3) Distance AE:

AE = 27.77 m.

A closed transverse has the following data.

LINES BEARING DISTANCE

A-B N. 30°30‘ E 46.50 m.
B-C S. 20°30‘ E 36.50 m.
C-A --- ---

1) Find the distance of line C-A.

2) Find the bearing of line C-A.
3) Find the area of the closed transverse.

Solution:

1) Distance CA:

Lines Bearing Distance Lat Dep

AB N 30°30‘ E 46.50 +40.07 +23.60
BC S 20°30‘ E 36.50 -34.19 +12.78
CA --- --- -5.88 -36.38

Distance AC = √ ( 5.88 ) +(36.38)²

2

AC= 36.85 m.

2) Bearing CA:

Dep
tan bearing =
Lat

36.38
tan bearing =

Bearing = S. 80°49‘W.

3) Bearing CA:
Lines Lat Dep DMD Double Area
AB +40.07 +23.60 +23.60 23.60(40.07)
= +345.65
BC -34.19 +12.78 +59.98 59.98(-34.19)
= 2050.72
CA -5.88 -36.38 +36.38 36.38(-5.88)
= 213.91

2A = +945.65 - 2050.72 – 213.91

A = -659.49

Area of transverse ABC = 659.49 sq.m.

A compound curve has a length of chord of the first curve (passing thru the P.C.
to P.T) of 470m. If the angle that the long chord makes with the chord from the
P.C. to P.C.C. and from P.T to the P.C.C. are 6° and 9° respectively. Assume the
long chord is parallel to the common tangent.

1) Find the length of the long chord.

2) Find the radius of first curve.
3) Find the radius to second curve.

Solution:
