Order of Mass
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Rite of Investiture of the Religious Habit of the New Seminarians
& Renewal of Vows MSHR Brothers

Introduction:

Dear sisters and brothers, we welcome you to our holy sacrifice of the mass. Today, we celebrate
the 22nd Sunday in ordinary time. Meals played an important role in the society in which Jesus lived.
More than a time for sharing nourishment, they were a time to share ideas and to model different
aspects of social relationships. In Luke's Gospel, the places that a person ate (at the home of a tax
collector, 5:29), the people with whom a person ate (sinners, 5:30), whether a person washed before
eating (11:38), and, as is the case here, the place that a person sits while eating are all important. The
narrator says Jesus tells a parable, but it is really wise advice to both guests and hosts about finding true
happiness at the heavenly banquet.

Jesus warns guests to wait before taking their places at the table lest they be asked to move if
someone more important arrives. This is more than just a lesson about dinner etiquette. It is advice on
how to find your true place in the Kingdom of God. Jesus advises hosts not to invite people who would be
expected to repay them to dinner but to invite those who could not repay: the poor, the crippled, the
lame, and the blind. This is where real blessings can be found.

In these sayings, Luke gives us not only advice on how to approach the end times but also on
how to live according to Jesus' vision of a good society. Luke's Gospel also advises us how the Church
must be part of bringing about this society. It is yet another example in Luke's Gospel of the reversal the
kingdom brings about.

Also, it is an important day for the 5 brothers of our as they will receive their habits with the holy
sacrifice of the mass. A religious habit is the distinctive attire or dress proper to a particular religious
institute like the Marian Society of the Holy Redeemer.

From early times the basic religious habit generally consisted of a tunic that was secured by a
cincture or belt; a scapular; and a hood. From the outset, the habit adopted by any religious institute
served several purposes. First, and most basically, it identified the individual wearing it as a member of a
particular group. For the Marian Society of the Holy Redeemer, the habit is more than a clothing of who
follows Christ. It is an Identity…an Expression of LOVE and SERVICE to Christ Jesus and His Church. We
will also witness the renewal of vows of the senior members of the congregation. A renewal of their
vows: of chastity, of poverty, and of obedience. A vow of Loving God…ALONE.

INTRODUCTORY RITES
Opening Hymn

Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The people reply: Amen.

Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.

The people reply: And with your spirit.

Penitential Act

I confess to almighty God and to you,

my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints, and you,
my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

The people reply: Amen.

Gloria

Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
3

have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading
SIR 3:17-18, 20, 28-29

My child, conduct your affairs with humility,

and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find favor with God.
What is too sublime for you, seek not,
into things beyond your strength search not.
The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs,
and an attentive ear is the joy of the wise.
Water quenches a flaming fire,
and alms atone for sins.

Responsorial Psalm
God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.

The just rejoice and exult before God;

they are glad and rejoice.
Sing to God, chant praise to his name;
whose name is the LORD.
R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.
The father of orphans and the defender of widows
is God in his holy dwelling.
God gives a home to the forsaken;
he leads forth prisoners to prosperity.
R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.
A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance;
you restored the land when it languished;
your flock settled in it;
in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy.
R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.

Second Reading
HEB 12:18-19, 22-24A

Brothers and sisters:

You have not approached that which could be touched
and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness
and storm and a trumpet blast
and a voice speaking words such that those who heard
begged that no message be further addressed to them.
No, you have approached Mount Zion
and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,
and countless angels in festal gathering,
and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven,
and God the judge of all,
and the spirits of the just made perfect,
and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,
and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel.

Gospel LK 14:1, 7-14

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine

at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,
and the people there were observing him carefully.

He told a parable to those who had been invited,

noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.
"When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,
do not recline at table in the place of honor.
A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,
and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say,
'Give your place to this man,'
and then you would proceed with embarrassment
to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited,
go and take the lowest place
so that when the host comes to you he may say,
'My friend, move up to a higher position.'
Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
For every one who exalts himself will be humbled,
but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
Then he said to the host who invited him,
"When you hold a lunch or a dinner,
do not invite your friends or your brothers
or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors,
in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.
5

Rather, when you hold a banquet,

invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.
For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Homily

BLESSING AND INVESTITURE of Religious Habit and Cincture

of the new members of the Marian Society of the Holy Redeemer
Adapted from the Rituale Romanum

The person who is to receive the habit is kneeling. The priest vested in white chasuble and white stole, says:

Priest: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All: Who made heaven and earth.

Priest: Blessed be the name of the Lord.

All: Both now and forevermore.

Priest: Lord, heed my prayer.

All: And let my cry be heard by you.

Priest: The Lord be with you.

All: And with your spirit.

Let us pray.

Almighty God and everlasting Father,

who willed that your only- begotten Son be clothed in our mortal nature,
we humbly beg you in your boundless goodness and compassionate generosity to let your
blessing + flow out on this garment, which our holy fathers
have sanctioned to be worn by those who renounce the world,
in token of innocence and lowliness.

Let it please you to endow these with such blessing, + that they, who are to wear it,
We earnestly beg you, Lord, hear our humble entreaties,
and help these servants of yours, whom we accept as brothers
of the Marian Society of the Holy Redeemer,
to be ever constant and true to their vocation,
6

purify their intention,

and to serve you in all holiness.

Protect your servants, Lord, with the saving grace of peace; and as they confide themselves to
the patronage of blessed Mary, ever a Virgin, let them be safe from all adversaries and
everything that will harm and endanger their vocation to the religious life.

May the Lord Jesus, who is our Good Shepherd, hold you in the palm of His hand.

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Blessing of the cincture

Let us pray.

Almighty and merciful God, who grant mercy and pardon to sinners as they seek your
tender forgiveness, we appeal to your compassionate generosity and mercy, asking that you
graciously bless + and hallow + these cinctures. Let them, who is to be girt with it in penance
for their sins, observe continence, which is so pleasing to you; let them be obedient to your
commandments; let them obtain pardon for their sins, by the prayers of the Blessed Mary, ever
Virgin, of St. Joseph her most chaste spouse, and all the angels and saints, in the end finally attain
everlasting life; through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

The priest sprinkles the cincture with holy water.

All: Amen.

Then the candidates will wear, assisted by their parents, the religious habit. After wearing the habit, each
candidate will wear the cincture.

The Blessing of the MSHR Medallion and conferral to the new brothers

The candidates will kneel in front of the superior. The superior blesses the medallion saying:

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus Christ, we beg you to accept with a blessing + the prayers of your servants
who are to wear these medals of your Mother. May they who wear them with love and devotion
be forever protected from the poison which satan laid in the of your children as they respond to
the vocation to the religious life, so that their prayers and devotion to your Mother may ever
begin in you and end in you, who live and reign forever and ever.
7

All: Amen.

Conferral of Medal

Priest: Receive this medal as the sign of your acceptance into the Marian Society of the Holy
Redeemer. Live in such a way that, with the help of the Mother of God, you may more and
more put on Christ and manifest Christ living in you, for the glory of the Trinity and for the
service of the Church and of your neighbor.

All: Amen.

Then he welcomes the new seminarian of MSHR with a paternal embrace.

RENEWAL OF VOWS DURING MASS

From the Rite of Initiation into Religious Life [RIRL]; RL 92.1-3.
Approved by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments
on the 23rd June 2007 with Prot. 284/07/L

Introduction

Vows are public promises. To nurture a closer relationship with Christ, religious model their life on
Christ’s example. His life had many, but three main characteristics:

- He lived without any possessions: “For you know the graciousness of our Lord Jesus Christ – how, being
rich, he became poor for your sakes, that by His poverty you might become rich.” (2 Cor. 8:9)
- He lived the chastity of an unmarried person and he spoke about celibacy: “… and there are eunuchs
who have made themselves so for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matt. 19:12)
- In all things, Jesus obeyed his Heavenly Father: “My food is to do the Will of Him who sent me, to
accomplish His work.” (Jn 4:34)
Men who are called to such vows, pledge lives to imitate Jesus in poverty, chastity and obedience.

THE RITE OF THE RENEWAL OF VOWS

Prayer for God’s grace

Priest: God our Father gives us the grace to persevere in our resolutions.
Let us pray to him for these sons of his
who are resolved today to renew their vows for mission
in the presence of the Church.

All pray for a time in silence. Then the celebrant says:

8

Lord,
in your providence
you have called these sons of yours
to be perfect as the Gospel teaches;
in your mercy grant that they may persevere to the end
along the way of your love
on which they have set out with such joy.
Through Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

After the prayer, two perpetually professed members of the community stand near the celebrant to act
as witnesses. Those who are to renew their profession come, one by one, to the celebrant and read the formula
of profession. If there is a large number renewing their vows, the formula of profession may be recited by all.
However, the concluding words, This I promise... must be said by each individually, as a clear expression of his
will.

For the honor of God, before the Church, present here (name of the diocese), I N.N. (or: We here
present), in the presence of N.N., vow for one year chastity, poverty and obedience, according to
the Book of Life and Statutes of the Marian Society of the Holy Redeemer.

This I promise, with the help and protection of Mary, Mother of the Holy Redeemer, and St.
Joseph, her most chaste spouse.

Amen.

Credo
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
At the words that follow up to and including and became man,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
9

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the Faithful

Priest: Dearly beloved brothers, let us pray to God the Father for his holy Church, for the peace and
salvation of the world, for our missionary family and for these brothers who today have renewed
their vows. Lord, hear us.

R.∫ Lord, graciously hear us.

— For our Holy Father the Pope and all the bishops: that by sound teaching and loving care they may be faithful
shepherds of God’s holy people. Lord, hear us.

— For the peace and salvation of the world: that all religious may be messengers and servants of the peace of
Christ, Lord, hear us.

— For our brothers N.N.: that their religious consecration in the Marian Society of the Holy Redeemer may bear
authentic fruits of holiness and zeal for a renewed evangelization. Lord, hear us.
— For our brothers N.N.: that in their chaste, poor and obedient lives they may show forth the fruitfulness of the
Church, be friends and helpers of the poor, and attract those who are far off to the sweet yoke of Christ. Lord, hear
us.

— For all of us here present: that by our prayers and example, we may be light and leaven of the world, in the
footsteps of Mary, the Mother of the Holy Redeemer. Lord, hear us.

Priest: Lord God, source of all holiness, give ear to the prayers of this missionary family, and through the
intercession of the blessed Virgin Mary, your humble servant and our Mother, bless and protect
these sons of yours, that, with your help, they may faithfully fulfil what they have promised
through your grace. Through Christ Our Lord.

All: Amen
