Continuous Assessment Criterion: The average of the best four out of the five assessed activities
(4 assignments, CAT). Assignment #3 will form a part of an activity on which students will have to make
an oral presentation. Oral presentation on Ass. #3 is a must and failed to do so will not get the eligibility.
Text book
Assignment #1, #2 ,#3 (design), Assignment #4
The assignments should be handed over on or before its due dates. Late submission of assignments
will result in loosing marks for lateness.
1. Submit 4 assignments on or before due dates [as given in the activity diary and
Assignment-3(a design activity) is compulsory])
2. Sit for the CAT
3. Appear for the oral interview/examination and is a must
4. Sit for the FINAL examination, which is of the CLOSED BOOK type of duration 3 hours.
Past assignments, model answers, and lesson materials are available on the Open University through
Virtual Class Room/Electrical & Computer Eng. Dept/ ECX-4234 for your easy reference. ID name
and the password for the same will be announced to you on the first day school.
Answers to the assignment should be sent by registered post to the following address or should be

current rating?
j) Why do we use DC voltage for insulation testing in domestic wiring and what voltage
value you select for insulation testing in USA?
b) If a separate protective conductor consisting of 1 mm 2 p.v.c. cable is used for the circuit
described above in (b) and the value of earth fault loop impedance external to this
circuit is given as 2.5 Ω, check whether the circuit complies with the adiabatic equation.

Two floors and three bed-rooms. The house should be completed with toilets, kitchen, living
area, a dining hall, and a wash room etc.
A sketch giving the house and the electricity distribution system of the supply authority in
the area. (not the wiring diagram which will be dealt later in assignment-3)
Also, list the electrical equipment the occupier would indicate to the supply authority in his
application for electricity to the premises.
In your next assignment, you are expected to provide the detailed electricity distribution
scheme for the said residence. Therefore keep a copy of this for use with the next
assignment.
All parts of the question must be answered in full to be awarded full marks.
Your assignment is to design a complete wiring system for a house, where the plan was
submitted in assignment #2 question #5. All rooms should be suitably illuminated and should
have adequate socket outlets. All bed-rooms should be supplied with air conditioners. There
should be a hot water geezer for supply to the kitchen and the bath-rooms. A 4-burner electric
cooker should be provided for kitchen, which should also have other modern kitchen
appliances. A washing machine is to be provided in the wash-room and a water pump to
connect the overhead tank. The list of electrical equipment given by the occupier of the
premises mentioned in assignment #2 should be taken into account.
The wiring system shall comply with the current regulations (17th edition of the IEE regulation),
and should include all aspects of a modern house. Your design should include:-
Give a list of the equipment, the owner gives to the designer/electrician for the above
residence (assignment #2, and inclusive of the items specified in this assignment) with their
power consumptions.
You should also determine the electricity connection that would be required for the house.
Indicate briefly how you would set about obtaining the supply connection from the supply
authority.
An address should be supplied to the location of the house, together with the ‘supply authority’.
What tests are necessary prior to the grant of a connection to the distribution network, and how
should this information be forwarded to the supply authority, and by whom?
While developing Assignment-3 report, following guide lines should be strictly followed:
Your Report on Assignment#3 should be according to the following format. Any other format
will not be accepted and returned for correction. Your presentation skill in this regard is also
considered during evaluation.
1. Cover Page (your name, registration number, centre, any decoration etc….)
2. Table of Content (content and the page numbers for easy reference)
4. House plan ground floor, 1st floor (showing all the appliances)
6. Wiring diagram for the electrical installation ground floor, 1st floor
8. Cable sizes for sub circuits, mcb/rccb and main wire selection
10. Inspection and testing procedures (you may contact CEB/LECO depot superintendent
or any other person available in your area, have a technical relationship and discuss
with them, for information)
11. Appendix Standard symbols used CEB/LECO agreement for supply electricity
Transparent covered report should be spiral-bound and submitted on or before the specified
date mentioned in your activity diary. Excuses like lack of time due to training assignments,
CAT exams, lab reports etc. are not entertained under any circumstances.
