“Situation of ethics and discipline in our society and

its importance in life and chemical industry”

What is ethics?
At its simplest, ethics is a system of moral principles. They affect how people
make decisions and lead their lives. Ethics is concerned with what is good for individuals and
society and is also described as moral philosophy.

Ethics covers the following dilemmas:

 how to live a good life

 our rights and responsibilities
 the language of right and wrong
 moral decisions - what is good and bad?

What is Discipline?
Discipline is the quality of being able to behave work and in a
controlled way which involves obeying particular rules or standards.

Discipline is being obedient and to have self-controlled behavior to follow orders of proper
authority. Discipline is of great importance in the whole life and needed in every walk of life. It is
required by everyone who needs to work on any task seriously. It we do not obey and follow the
orders of the superiors.

Situation of ethics and discipline in our society:

Today Lack of Discipline
Moral values and graciousness, in the past, were prominent in most teenagers. Majority of the
youths then learnt respect, courtesy, consideration, decency, propriety, honesty and righteousness
from a young age, and had enough self-discipline to hold to these values. However, these moral
values and self-discipline are slowly diminishing over the years, as most of the younger generation
are gradually disregarding these ethics. The listed values have slowly faded away as
they mean little to these adolescents, as moral values and self-discipline are on the verge of
disappearing.

Ethics have become an organizational priority. In the 21st century, ethics is neither a luxury nor
an option. There is a growing impatience within society with selfish and irresponsible actions that
impoverish some, while enriching the crafty, society is more alert than ever before to ethical
recklessness that benefits some, while injuring others.

Because people will do what they want to do. They either don’t care what other people think, or
they hide their immorality from other people. If they want money, they rob a place, if they want a
high, they take drugs or drink beer and don’t think about the consequences.

Ethics in Islam:
The concept of social life of the Prophet of Islam Muhammad (Peace be upon Him PBUH) to
whom, God in Quran called, Rahmatul-lil-Aalameen (Blessing for the Worlds), is very much
positive and constructive.
According to Him, the loftiest service is the service to humanity, and to serve humanity in an
appropriate manner, the better way is to guide him or in broader terms, Educate him.

Discipline in Islam:
Every human desire success in life, but success depends on strictly
following the path of discipline.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) spent years in order to change the unruly Arab culture into a civilized
society. Islam encourages Muslims to display responsible behavior in life. It disallows drinking
alcohol, gambling and other vices which take people towards indiscipline and laxity. The Holy
Quran portrays a vivid picture of the Day of Judgment characterized by an extreme sense of
discipline. It says “On the day when it comes no person shall speak except by His (Allah’s) leave.
…” (11:105).

Discipline is one of the most important requirements if a nation is to progress. It leads man to the
path of success, be it in any field or institution. Without adhering to a strict sense of discipline,
achieving success becomes very difficult.
Ethics and Discipline in and its importance in life:

The Importance of Ethical Behavior:

Ethics is shown to play an important role in molding one’s behavior to identify what is right and
wrong to do in a society, as it is a belief and standard that helps to create a harmonious and
conforming environment. Not only that, in order to eradicate erosion of ethics among society one
need to understand why ethics play a vital role to everyone as a whole, and not being bias to only
a part of the community.

Ethics is also important for those citizens who do not aspire to work in law enforcement. Successful
business leaders often say that treating people morally is a very important aspect in obtaining
success. A person’s reputation is of key importance for a business leader, and if a person’s
reputation is damaged by poor ethical conduct, the business will also suffer. The same is true in
all walks of life. Where ethics are taken seriously, and people strive to make ethical decisions and
actions, personal and professional success follow.

For citizens, even for those of us with no aspirations in a career in law enforcement, morality and
integrity are important characteristics to demonstrate. We instinctively know that it is good to be
moral and act with integrity, but by coming to an understanding of the reasons for morality and
integrity, we will be motivated to champion such behavior. Among the reasons to be moral and
integral, regardless of occupation are to:

 Make society better. When we help make society better, we are rewarded with also
making better own lives and the lives of our families and friends. Without moral conduct,
society would be a miserable place.
 Treat everyone equally. Equality is a cornerstone of most Western democracies, where all
individuals are afforded the same rights. This is not possible without the majority of
citizens behaving in a moral manner.
 Secure meaningful employment. Often employers will look at a person’ past behavior as
a predictor of future behavior. Someone who has a history of immoral behavior will have
difficulty securing employment in a meaningful job, as that person may not be trusted.
 Succeed at business. If you are employed in an occupation in which there you must rely
on others, your moral conduct will determine the degree of goodwill that you receive from
others. Businesses that have a checkered moral history are typically viewed with caution
and are unlikely to attract new customers through word of mouth, and therefore are unlikely
to prosper. This is especially the case where social media makes customer reviews readily
accessible.
 Lessen stress. When we make immoral decisions, we tend to feel uncomfortable and
concerned about our decision making. Making the right moral decision, or taking a
principled perspective on an issue, reduces stress.

The Importance of Discipline:

Discipline differentiates humans from beasts. For example, a

stray animal leads an irregular and undisciplined life. It sleeps wherever it finds a place, scavenges
through garbage for scraps of food etc. Animals do not have a sense of right and wrong, nor a
guide or directions to regulate their life. But humans are subject to discipline and their success lies
in adherence to it.

A society without a strong sense of discipline in all areas of life has, time and again in human
history, proved to be well on the way to decay. Unfortunately, over the last many years many state
organizations in Pakistan, as well as the public at large, have ignored the Islamic message of
discipline.

For example, we often read reports pointing out financial indiscipline in matters of public funds.
Government officers running the public services have become lax. Major cities like Karachi,
Lahore and Islamabad present the worse scenario of indiscipline. Markets are plagued by rampant
encroachments, traffic on the roads is hugger-mugger, people travel on the roofs of buses without
realizing the inherent dangers. Lack of discipline makes our main roads jam-packed causing
irritation and friction on thoroughfares. Illegal parking and crumbling roads make urban life a
nightmare. These are just a few examples
Expecting to attain success without having discipline in life is like expecting a fairy Godmother to
solve all your problems just by moving her wand. It is impossible! If you take a closer look at both
successful and unsuccessful individuals in life, you will essentially find one major difference
between them, the successful people are disciplined while the unsuccessful ones are not
disciplined. How can you expect your office and your staff to work properly if you being the
manager do not reach your workplace on time?

It has been wisely said “For every disciplined action there is a multiple reward”.
