Positive Psychology (Martin Seligman)

 Short biographical background


Born August 12, 1942 in Albany, New York. Published books. Graduated with a bachelor’s degree
in Philosophy and a PhD in Psychology. His inspiration for the Positive Psychology is his
daughter, Nikki.
He is a strong promoter of positive psychology and well-being.
 Three areas of positive experience
1. The past – focuses on well-being (satisfaction and contentment)
2. The present – focuses on happiness and flow experiences
3. The future – focuses on optimism and hope
 Three Nodes
1. Subjective Node – positive experiences
2. Individual Node – focuses on being a good person
3. Group Node – effects on communities
 Authentic Happiness Theory
1. Mixture of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being
*Hedonic – high levels of positive effect and low levels of negative effect
*Eudaimonic – meaning and purpose in life
2. A pleasurable, engaged and meaningful life
*pleasurable life – positive emotion (pleasure, ecstasy, warmth comfort)
*engaged life – flow (being one with an object)
*meaningful life – serving something higher than yourself (family, religion, political party)
