Weekly classroom news

August 25, 2019

Hello!
The first two days of school were fantastic! I was able to meet our mature,
responsible, and respectful children. I am excited for a wonderful year full of
collaboration, experiences, and growth. I look forward to seeing all of you on Wednesday,
August 28th at 6:00p for our Back to School Night.
Announcements:
✏ We are ready to start using technology! If you are allowing your students to bring
devices to school please send them with your child on Monday.
✏ Make sure you follow me on Twitter: @MrsSheehan5
✏ Make sure you connect to our classroom Remind app
✏ If you haven’t already, please fill out all of the forms in the Virtual First-Day Folder
✏ We have gone through all our school supplies. The students brought home all of the
supplies that are not needed in our room.
✏ I have sent home the Go Math! textbook. We have digital versions of this textbook that
we will be using in the classroom. If a student needs extra practice, I will assign
pages/activities from that book so please do not lose the book.
✏ We will begin a “Name Identity” project that allows the student to research how they
received their name. I encourage you to start the conversation with your child about the
origin of their name.
What is happening in the classroom:
MATH: We will begin practicing routines for our Math Workshop model of instruction. As the
week progresses we will be diving right into curriculum by starting Word Problems (SOL 5.4)
SCIENCE: We will be investigating the Scientific Method and other investigations (SOL 5.1)
We will be also explaining and practicing the different roles of science teams.
READING: We will begin practicing routines for our Reading Workshop. We will be discussing
what it takes to build a reading life. Students will explore different genres and how to
choose “good fit” books from our classroom and school library. It is important that your child
read for at least 20 minutes every night at home.
WRITING: We will be reviewing the writing process and engaging in various prompts to
exercise our skills. This will lead us into crafting a personal narrative.
GENIUS HOUR PROJECT: We will begin discussing research skills and procedures in order to
successfully begin our first quarter Genius Hour Project.
Upcoming dates:
8/27 Bike Rodeo: 4:30p-5:30p
8/28 Back to School Night: 6:00p – 7:30p (2 sessions)

Thank you!
I loved meeting all of you at Open House. Thank you for trusting me with your children. As a
mother I understand the anxiety we have as parents. Are we are doing what is best for our
child? Rosa Lee Carter Elementary is an amazing school and I am fully committed to
facilitating, helping, and nourishing your child’s achievements. I am looking forward to working
with you throughout this year!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Hillary Sheehan
