CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter the researcher presents about the background of study,

problem of study, objective of study, scope and limitation, and definition of key

terms.

A. Background of Study.

English is international language used by many people in the world. 1 English

has an important role in the world. it can be used to communicate with people of

other countries and also used as an instrument in utilizing modern sciences and

technology. Communication itself is activity of expressing ideas and feeling or of

giving people information.2 People who want to get technological and scientific

advances have to master English language well. It can called by good in speaking.

Speaking is one of the central elements of communication.3 Speaking is an

important skill in language learning. By speaking, speaker and listener can get

information with others. 4

Based on observation that researcher conduct in IAIN Madura At first

semester of english department academic year 2018/2019, according one of

students first semester in D class stated some of their friend in the class say that

speaking is difficult because they do not have some vocabularies and also they

feel nervous and not confidence speaking in front of the class or in the class. One

factor also come from the less motivation. Sometime teachers just give topic

without push students more diligent or increase their knowledge such as give

reward and punishment. And just a little of teacher that give explanation about the

importance of skill in English, especially speaking. So, there is no stimulus for

they to do better.

There are potential problems that can hinder the students to speaks like

shyness, nervousness, feeling afraid or making mistakes, and do not know to

pronounce in certain words. Those factors above become the reasons why the

students often get problems in speaking skill. Motivation is one of the

psychological factors that affects language learning. Learner will be successful

with the proper motivation. Motivation plays a significant role in the process

learning language.

No matter what and how the methods are used, the result will be affected by

the motivation of the students and the teachers. With motivation, people are eager

to do more. In this education field, motivation make the students want to learn

more. In the other word, it can be summed up that high motivation will affect

learning achievement especially in speaking.

Sometimes the teacher don't realize that they have to motivate their student to

study. Teachers just give the learning process without think the students interested

in their learning and even don't let their student's to know what their learning

purposes are. Especially in speaking skill achievement, in fact some teacher do

not care to it because the student will get speaking course in next semester.

Whereas, increase speaking skill of students is so important to communicate.

3

Example, when class conduct presentation. In fact, in english department some of

lecturer will ask their students to conduct discussion with english in it is by oral.

So, the researher think that give motivation to students for good in speaking skill

is necessary.

Based on the conditions above, the researcher is interested in conduct

research about the relationship between student's motivation and their speaking

skill achievement.

B. Problem of the Study

1. Is there any correlation between first semester student’s motivation and their

speaking skill achievement TBI D class of IAIN Madura?

2. How significant is the correlation between first semester student’s motivation

and their speaking skill achievement TBI D class of IAIN Madura?

C. Objective of the Study

1. To examine the correlation between first semester student’s motivation and

their speaking skill achievement TBI D class of IAIN Madura.

2. To measure the significance of correlation between first semester student’s

motivation and their speaking skill achievement TBI D class of IAIN Madura.

D. Hypothesis of the Study

Hypothesis is a possible answer from the problems that has to be proved that

truth of the research. Hypothesis is statement in quantitative research in which the

investigator makes a prediction or a conjecture about the outcome of relationships

among attributes or characteristic.5

5
John W. Creswell, Educational Research: Planning, Conducting, and Evaluating Quantitative and
Qualitative Research, (Boston: Person Education,201 2), p.1 1 1
4

The hypothesis is as follow:

1. Null-hypothesis (H0)

There is no correlation between first semester student's motivation and their

speaking skill achievement TBI D of IAIN Madura.

2. Alternative-hypothesis (Ha)

There is relationship between first semester student's motivation and their

speaking skill achievement TBI D of IAIN Madura.

From the two hyphotesis above, researcher tends to use alternative hypothesis

(Ha) because the researcher believes that there is significance correlation between

student's motivation and their speaking skill achievement.

E. Significance of the Study

The researcher proposes two significances of the study, namely practical and

theoritical significance.

1. Theoritical significance

The result of this study hopefully will give some useful information about

students motivation and speaking skill that covering pronounce, grammar,

fluency, vocabulary.

2. Practical significance

a) For the English teacher

The English teacher are able to improve and develop their method in

teaching especially speaking by giving motivation for their students.

5

b) The students

The research will give feedback to student's motivation to increase

their skill.

c) The readers

This research can make them have a motivation learn and confidence

in speaking.

d) For IAIN and other researchers

this study hopefully can be reference for the library and also be a

reference for other researchers in conducting a further research.

F. The Scope and Limitation of the Study

Establishing the scope and limitation in a research facilitates a researcher

focusing and avoiding the risks such as misunderstanding the problem and

unnecessary information in order the area of research does not spread. Scope is

the area that wants to achieve by researcher. Limitation is potential weakness or

problems with the study identified by the researcher.6

Scope of this research focuses on students speaking skill of D class IAIN

Madura academic year 2018/2019. Limitation of this research is motivation on

students speaking skill.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter describe some theories related to the title the correlation between

first semester student's motivation and their speaking skill achievement. It is

divided into two parts; theoretical study and previous study.

A. Theoretical Study

This part discusses some relevant theories which are associated with the

study. It is divided into four sub-sections; speaking, motivation,

achievement, relationship between motivation and achievement.

1. Speaking

a. Definition of Speaking

Speaking is an activity of expressing ideas and feeling orally. Every action

that transfer something to the other by oral it can call by speaking. It can be give

command, instruction or anything by oral. Speaking is one of the important skills

that have to be mastered by students in learning english especially for english

department. Speaking is not only saying ideas, but also delivering and presenting

new information to other people. Speaking is an act to express ideas, feeling, or

everything orally. According to merriam webster, speaking is an act to express

thoughts, opinions, or feeling orally. 7

b. Components of Speaking

7
https://www.Merriam-webster.com/dictionary/speak, accessed on september 20 at 08:45 am

7
8

There are four components of Speaking8:

a. Grammar is needed for students to arrange a correct sentence in conversation.

b. Vocabulary means the appropriate diction which is used in communication.

Without having a much of vocabulary, someone can not do communication or

express their ideas by oral or written form.

c. Pronunciation is the way for students to produce clearer language when they

speak.

d. Fluency As the ability to speak fluently and accurately.

2. Motivation

a. Definition of Motivation

Motivation is common word for someone nowadays, it can be seen from

some artikels, seminars, and television programs. This is can motivate someone to

have a better life sight and also push them to better than before. The failure or

succesful planning process can be caused by motivation. Someone can get great

push by motivation.

Motivation is so important for someone especially for the students.

Motivation can give support of the study for the reader in order to have

enthusiasm to seek the science and knowledge. Motivation is a necessary which is

very important in teaching learning process to the teacher and also the student,

and it can make someone want to do something which they want.

ability.html?m=1 accessed on September 20 at 08:45 am

The desire to learn can come from many causes. Perhaps the students love

the subject or are simply interested to see what it is like. On the other hand, they

may have a practical reason for their study.9 if they like discussion, ask the student

to do discussion because it is a good idea to provoke them speak and use all word

that they know. Motivation is an energy change within the person charactherized

by effective arousal and anticipatory goal reaction. Change of energy in them self

like an activity. Because someone has purposed from the activity, so someone

have strong motivation to get it with expedient which can they do to get it. In the

motivation process, motivation is needed, because if someone do not have

motivation when learning, impossible to do teaching activity.

In other hand, Arends said that motivation is the process that stimulate the

behaviour or arouse to take action. Despite there are many experts have proposed

the definition about motivation, the sentences are differences only, but they have

same meaning. That is to stimulate the human's energy to do their activity to get a

good purpose. Therefore, they need an attention and support in order that goal

comes true and the motivation has a certain purpose, and it can arouse the spirit

and desire to learn well.10

The researcher concludes that motivation generally as energy to support all

goals that human have made. Motivation can be as a guidance to take some efforts

to achieve what the people wants. Motivation as a direction and also energy for

people do everything including improve their speaking skill achievement. Because

it is important to communicate with other people.

b. Kinds of Motivation

9
Jeremy harmer, how to teach english (England: Pearson education limited, 1998), p.8
10
Arend, richard. Learning to teach (New York : the McGraw Hill Companies, 2004), p.141
10

Based on the definition and analysis of the motivation above. Based on

arends there are two major types of motivation.11 those are:

1) Intrinsic motivation

When behavior is sparked internally by one's own interest or

curiosity or just for the pure enjoyment of an experience. If

someone have intrinsic motivation inside themselves, they will do

an activity not needed motivation from outside itself. In learning

activity, intrinsic motivation is very important to make someone

feel confidence. Someone who has not intrinsic motivation is

difficult to do learning activity. If someone has intrinsic motivation

they always get progress in learning.

2) Extrinsic motivation

Extrinsic motivation is kick in when individuals are influenced

to action from external or enviromental factors, such as rewards,

punishment, or social pressures. Extrinsic motivation is not means

the motivation who no needed and not good in education. Extrinsic

motivation needed in order to the students have desire to study. The

purpose of varieties way is to make the student get motivation to

study. The teacher must be got up motivation student's interest with

advantage of extrinsic motivation. Based on the explanation above

the teacher have to use this extrinsic motivation exactly and true to

support the process teaching learning.

c. The Function of Motivation in Learning

11
Ibid, p.37
11

As motivation is very important in learning process, instructional activities and

materials must be exciting, stimulating and interesting for learners. Moreover the

teacher must attention to the student's attitude have brings to the teaching learning

activity. It become the teacher's responsible in arranged and make the real goal,

choose and arrange learning that they need, skill and development step of

students, have any method and variant of learning media. Consist of motivation to

the students.

Beside that, the student have to confidence for the abilities that they have,

because it can help them to be brave do anything which they think it is true. For

example, when the result of their test is bad, it make them lost their spirit and lazy

to study that it make the learning process not effective. But when the result of

their test is good, it make them pushed to study hard and will be effort to

development their good value more. This condition exactly become a motivation

to the students that will be influence to their learning process.12

According to arends had statements that explained about the student motivation

to learn. It is devided them in two categories, they are endogenous statements and

exogenous statements.

1) Endogenous statements, emphasized the personal relevance of learning

activities and communicated to students they were going to have fun

and do well.

12
Taufik, inspiring teaching (jakarta: Gema Insani, 2009), p.83
12

2) Exogenous statements, on the other hand, included those that promised

positive rewards, such as good grades, such as threats, if work was not

complete.13

The statement above have been clear if the teacher can give and increase

the students motivetion by doing an approach for the students, where the teachers

can give a directive, siggestion or the certain ways to arouse their motivation. As

Benjamin said that many teacher believe that the decision about what is possible

should be based not on the students characteristics but on the teacher's teaching

style, ability, experince, and personality. The teacher do differ in their capabilities

and especially in their self confidence in relation to particular objectives.14

3. Achievement

Teaching and learning is a concept that can not separate. Learning

reconcile of what must do by someone as subject in learning. Learning reconcile

of what must the teacher do as teacher. The two concepts teaching learning what

the student and teacher do is solid in unit activity. Between them there is

interaction with teacher. The ability of student in teaching learning process must

get result and can with creativity of someone without intervention by others as

teacher. Based on explanation above achievement are the abilities that have

students be obtained after they achieve conduct from teacher.15

a. The function and purpose of achievement

1) The function of achievements

The function of achievement not only to determine progress of student learning,

but it so wide. The function of achievement as follow:

13
Arend richard. Learning to teach (New York: the McGraw Hill Companies, 2004), p.156
14
Benjamin, evaouation to improve learning (New york: McGraw-Hill book Company, 1981), p.8
15
Sudjana nana. Penilaian hasil belajar mengajar (bandung: rosda, 2004), p.22
13

a) Achievement help the student realized self to change or develop their

attitude.

b) Achievement help to get satisfied what the student done for their study.

c) Achievement help the teacher to decide the method os suitable or not for

student.

From the statement above it is clear that the function of achievement is

useful for students or for teachers.

2) The purpose of achievement

The purpose of achievement is not only gives numeral for achievement of

student. The purposes of achievement are:

a) Give information about progress of student to get the aim of students

which relate with learning activities.

b) Give information which can used to advise learning activity more.

c) Give information which can because by the teacher and students to know

the level of students ability, decide their difficulties, and to do remidial

activity.

d) Give motivation of student learning with their knows self progress and

give stimulate to do remidial.

e) Give information about all aspect progress of student.

f) Give advice exactly to choose the school which suitable with their skill

and their ability.

14

4. The relationship between motivation and achievement

Generally, motivation can help the students to understand and explain their

ability, consist of their learning ability. There are important role from the

motivation in learning, such as:

a. Determine thing that as pushed in learning

b. Make clear the purpose of learning that they want

c. Determine the right way to make them diligent in learning

d. Determine the spirit to learn16

Motivation have important role. Motivation as pushed for student in learning,

intensity of learning student have thing which influenced by motivation. Students

who want to know something from what they do in learning activity as purpose of

what the student want as long as they study. Because the learner have purpose to

know about something, finally the student desire to learn.17 The different learning

draw as a part of learning that effort to development each student by

understanding the students and help them to success in their study. All of learning

activity of student is to get good achievement. Every student certain do not want

gets bad achievement. Because of that, every student is competitive to get it with

an optimum effort. In this case, achievement can call as necessary which up out of

motivation from inside the student self to always study.

One time the student not yet get good achievement, where the success or far

from what they hope, so the student feel not satisfied yet. Necessity of student to

get good achievement not yet gets it to this time and and the students try to get it

in the future. Because of that, necessity of student to get satisfied always pushed

the student to study. Especially in speaking, when they get motivation it can push

them to try and try until they will feel confidence when speak.

B. Previous Study

The place of topic student motivation on speaking skill creates a

new interest for researcher at previous study, there are two researchers

who observe related with this.

18
First, Istianti did a research about the Correlation Between

Student’s Motivation in Learning Speaking and Their Speaking Ability.

The sample of this study is 30 students taken from second grade of SMA

Darussalam Ciputat. The method used in this study was a quantitatively

methods and the technique used in this study was a correlational technique.

In collecting the data, this study was distributing questionnaire to the

respondents and conducting classroom observation to assess student’s

motivation. The questionnaire based on indicators based on intrinsic and

extrinsic motivation which adopted from the attitude/motivation test

battery (AMTB) by Gardner and translated into Indonesian language.

Besides, in assessing student’s speaking ability, this study conducted oral

test to the students. In analyzing the data, the questionnaire assessed by

Likert’s scale rating, classroom observation was assessed based on the

classroom observation rubric, and oral test was measured by David scale

rating. The results of this study show that there is a positive correlation

between student motivation in learning and their speaking ability.

The second, Kusumaningsih also did a research about students

motivation toward speaking ability. This study was conducted in MAN

Sukoharjo by septiana. This research is a correlation research which the

data is analyzed quantitatively. The population of research all the first

grades of MAN Sukoharjo in the academic year 2016/2017. The

instruments of collecting data are questionnaire and test. The questionnaire

to students motivation, and the test is for speaking ability. The results of

the study show that there is a positive correlation between students

motivation and speaking ability with the coefficient of correlation r-

obtained is higher than r-table ( 0,987>0,361 ).19

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

This chapter explains in detail how the research is conducted. This chapter

is divided into six sub-sections. They are research design, population and sample,

research instruments, data validity and reliability, data collection procedures, data

analysis.

A. Research Design

Research designs are the specific procedures involved in the research

process: data collection, data analysis, and report writing20. Research design will

guide the researcher during the process in conducting the research. The research

design must be made in order to make the researcher is easy to collect and analyze

the data.

The researcher uses correlational research design to do this study. In this

research, researcher would like to see the possibility of correlation between the

student's motivation as independent variable (X variable) and their achievement as

dependent variable (Y variable).

B. Population and Sample

1. Population

A target population is a group of individuals (or a group of organizations)

with some common defining characteristic that the researcher can identify and

1

and Qualitative Research, 4th Ed, (Boston: Pearson Education,2012), p.20

17
18

study21. The target population for the study is the students of TBI first semester

IAIN madura. In first semester of TBI there are five class. They are A class, B

class, C class, D class, E class.

2. Sample

. A sample is a subgroup of target population that the researcher plans to

study for generalizing about the target population22 The technique of sampling in

this research used convenience sampling. From this sampling, the resercher got

TBI D as the sample for this reserch. This class consists of 38 students.

C. Research Instruments

Instrument is a tool of measuring, observing, or documenting data23

1. Questionnaire

Questionnaire is total of question have written who used to get information

from respondents it means report about the personality24. Researcher will use

closed questionnaire. The questionnaire is distributed for the student at TBI D

class of IAIN Madura. It is written in English language. The questionnaire

consists of some questions which are uses to get data.

After that, the questionnaire sheet is submitted by the respondents to the

researcher. Then, researcher will calculate all of respondent's answer. All of the

respondent's answer is analyzed by the researcher to make to make conclusion

from the result. The students who were chosen as the sample were asked to fill out

the questionnaires in the presence of the researcher. There 10 statements of

student's motivation. The score of every item depend on the statement. The

statement having positive tendency is score 5, agree is 4, undecided is 3, disagree

is 2, and strongly disagree is 1.

Based on the explanation above researcher gathering the data about the score from

test as variable Y (Appendix III). This test used to look for the result of research

after calculate it with the result of questionnaire by using statistical method and

namely is product moment. Beside that the documentations are used by researcher

are form sheet of questionnaire (Appendix I ), the value table of coefficient "r"

Product Moment ( Appendix II), the result of motivation based on questionnaire

(Appendix III), the result data students motivation (X), students achievement (Y),

the quadrate of students motivation (X2), the students achievement (Y2), and

multiplication of students motivation and students achievement ( Appendix IV ).

2. Test

A test is a method of measuring a person’s ability, knowledge, or performance in

a given domain. Test is a method of measuring a person's ability, knowledge, or

performance in given domain. A test is used to collect data of student speaking.

Researcher give one topic, then the participants speak up about the topic. The kind

of test is oral test. It is done to know the student's speaking skill involves their

grammar, vocabulary fluency, pronunciation. The oral test is assessed by

individual to know the skill speaking of respondents clearly. The test is conduct in

campus area. Participants asked to practice speaking with topic Asking and

Giving Opinion. Researcher give topic to easier for respondents.

D. Data Reliability and Validity

20

1. Data Validity

Validity is the development of sound evidence to demonstrate that the test

interpretation (of scores about the concept or construct that the test is assumed to

measure) matches its proposed used25. In this research for instruments the

researcher uses content validity. In order to ensure that questionnaire already

made is appropriate with the respondent problem. And for speaking skill test

already made by researcher measures what the researcher intends to measure. In

this case, to gain validity, researcher show questionnaire and test to the thesis

advisor before being given to respondents. The thesis advisor comments used to

revise it. After the revision, the thesis advisor agreed that questionnaire and test is

valid and appropriate for this study.

2. Data Reliability

Reliability means that scores from instrument are stable and consistent. Reliability

means that individual scores from and instrument should be nearly the same or

stable on repeated administrations of the instrument and they should be free from

sources of measurement error and consistent26.

The researcher uses internal consistency reliability and calculates the

questionnaire using Alfa Cronbach technique. The researcher uses this technique

because is appropriate to test the reliability of interval data or essay27. Here are

Alfa Cronbach formula28 :

Where :

ri= instrument reliability

si2= Each item total variance

st 2 = Total variance of the total score

The researcher determines the reliability of the first semester students

speaking test uses internal consistency reliability and calculates the speaking test

score using Kuder Richardson formula 21 (KR 21). KR 21 is simpler than Kuder

Richardson 20 (KR 20) even KR 20 tend to gives higher results than KR 2129.

Here are the formula of KR 2130 :

Where :

ri = the reliability of the instrument

k = number of item of the instrument

M= mean of the total score

St2= total variance

3. Data Collection Procedure

According to Creswell, collecting data is an activity in identifying and

selecting individuals for a study, obtaining their permission to study them, and

gathering information by asking people questions or their behaviors. 31 Data

collection is the way to collect and obtain valid information. The researcher will

use some techniques to collect data, they are

The researcher uses questionnaire. For the data collection, this is done to

gather the data from the respondents.

The data collection procedures were as follow:

a. Firstly, the researcher ask permission to the teacher.

b. Researcher giving the questionnaire to the respondents (students).

c. Respondents are asked to fill questionnaire. Questionnaire given

are about motivation of speaking.

d. Researcher ask questionnaire back from respondents.

e. To know speaking skill, researcher asks respondents read text

dialogue as test.

f. Finally, the data from questionnaire and score of test will be

analyzed, then calculates the data by using the formula of product

moment and interprete the result of it into the table of

interpretation.
32
data. In this study, the researcher looks for the data through information

which relate with this research. The informed research ration and the explanation

got by questionnaire.

4. Data Analysis

The data analysis is a way to employ and analyzed the obtained data. In

conducting a research, the researcher can apply the statistical or non statistic

analysis, based the statements that the researcher has already had.

32
Ibid, p. 9
23

The data come from the score of the questionnaire on the student's motivation

and their achievement. The students who were chosen as the sample were asked to

fill out the questionnaires in the presence of the researcher. There 10 statements of

student's motivation. The score of every items depend on the statement. The

statement having positive tendency is score 5, agree is 4, undecided is 3, disagree

is 2, and strongly disagree is 1.

To find out degree of speaking skill, the researcher calculates score of the test

one by one. If the respondents good in four aspects ther are grammar, vocabulary,

fluency, pronunciation. They will get score 100. The score of every aspects is 25.

In classifying the score, the researcher uses the categories which is submitted, as

follow.33

Table 3.1 to know speaking skill

Score Category

80-100 Excellent

70-79 Good

60-69 Fair

50-59 Low

0-49 Poor

The research will be analyzed to find out the mean, and to know there is

relationship between student's motivation and their speaking skill achievement or

not.

The researcher can know it by analysis it by using formula of product moment.

Note :

rxy : Correlation between X and Y

∑xy : the total number crossing deviation between variable X and Y

∑x : the total score of variable X

∑y : the total score of variable Y

N : the number of respondents

To know the correlation weather it is significance or not, it must be reffered

by table r product moment in the level of significance 5%, the significance of

relationship between variable X and Y is like the following criteria:

1) If the result of r statistical is the same or bigger than r table, the correlation is

significance, so the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the work hypothesis (Ha)

is accepted.
25

2) If the result of r statistical is the smaller than r table, the correlation is not

significance it means that, the work hypothesis (Ha) is rejected and the null

hypothesis (H0) is accepted.

Then, interpreting the value of rxy by referring to rough standard so that the

degree of correlation can be classified.
