Sources of news

It has been well established that news is the one of the form of communication between human

beings. In the past civilization, a crude type of information was followed and started by exchanging

ideas, the information or ideas from one person to another. All the civilization were developed, the

more complex form of communication was appeared, there appeared more complex source of

communication. It also increased the transfer of ideas and information, besides the growth of more

accurate, sophisticated and scientific process. Today we have facilities of teleprinters, wireless and

cables as the system of telecommunication.

Definition

News sources are the ways and routes through which a news channel gets news.

1. News agencies

New agency is the organization of journalist’s established to supply news report to

organizations in the newspapers, magazines, radios and TV channels. They are also known

as wire service or news service.

New agencies generally prepare hard news stories that can be used by other news

organizations with little or no modification. They provide these articles in bulk,

electronically through the wire services, today, they frequently use internet.

2. Monitoring

Monitoring officers listen to the transmissions in different language, translate them and

make a report to it.

For good monitoring a monitor must be proficient in the language he is monitoring. Senior

monitors scrutinize the monitoring reports and finally the news items to

be made a part of news bulletin are sent to the news editors.

 TV

TV is the most important sources of news. News are telecast several times in 24 hours. The

range of TV is unlimited for understanding both by educated and illiterate people. The

newspaper listen to the news telecast by TV. The news telecast by TV also carry the

reputation of authenticity. TV is the excellent example of providing information not only

to newspaper but also the audience.

 Radio

Radio is the most effective medium of communication, is the also first in news and has

several news bulletin within 24 hours even the subeditors and journalists monitor news

from the major foreign radio networks. Newspaper benefits themselves from the radio news

because they are considered to be the latest.

3. Correspondent and reporters

The people of newspaper, who gives news outsides the city. All the newspaper make

appointment to their reporters and correspondents in the various prominent and important

place of country

 Correspondent

Those journalist who represent their work for newspaper from the abroad

They are appointed in different cities and countries. The organization of the newspaper

bifurcate the functions and duties of their workers in specialized fields or department.

 Reporter

Those journalist who represent their work for newspaper inside their own country

He is highly important person in the newspaper. He bring in news which is commodity in

all newspaper deal. Without reporter, there can be little business in news and without

business there is no news

4. Letter to editor

Letter to editor are also important sources of news by which the editor gets news from the

letters of general people. Though these letters, people express their views and suggestions

on different level, national and international issues.

5. Press release

An official statement issued to newspapers giving information on a particular matter

A news release or press release or press statement is written or recorded communication,

directed at members of the news media, for the purpose of announcing something, claimed

as having news value. Sometimes news releases are sent for the purpose of announcing

news conferences.

Means of sending a Press Release

Typically, it is mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to the assignment editors at newspapers,

magazines, radio stations, television stations, and or television networks

6. Press Note

Press note are issued by government whenever some information in categorical term or

unambiguous term is to provide to the general public. They contain information on specific

matters in which the government’s firm stand is to be explained. The press notes are to be

published by the newspapers, in the manner they are received by them. No change in the

content is required

7. Handout

Handouts are issued for informing the people about the government and semi government

policies. A handout is a document containing information which are circulated for general

information. The handouts may be issued by an organization to convey information to

general public at large. They contain information about tours of ministers and appointments

of high officials

8. Police headquarter

Police stations and headquarter are valuable source of information. Policeman working

keep a record of all criminals acts registered in police stations. Reporters remain in touch

with police station and collect all cases having news values.

News gives full coverage to the press conference addressed by various personalities. The

statement made at the start of the conference explaining, precise reason for calling the press

conference.

Another big source is the hospitals from where news of case regarding accident are known.

The newspaper and the magazines, both national and international contain good material

for publication by the newspaper. Stories are published by newspaper from interview

published in the magazines. Similarly, the magazines and the newspaper published abroad

are also benefited by the newspaper.

Interviews are secured to obtain information pertaining to different activities and field.

Men in the news are interviewed subject to the requirement of the newspapers for securing

publicity material.

National and provincial assemblies are very important places for newsmen. Newspapers

daily give some space for assembly sessions

14. Fire brigade stains

These are the Centre of information, from where the incident of fire can be known and

causalities or loss of valuable life can be estimated. These Centre enables to reporters to go

to the place of the incident in person. He can get detailed information of owner of property

and the neighbors nearby.

15. Courts

There are two kinds of court civil court and criminal courts, from where journalist can get

information regarding the famous cases, about which the people want to know the detailed

to the case. The reporter make it sure to visit the court, where the procedure of the case, is

being followed. In this connection, some newspaper have appointed special reporters

regarding the court.

16. Institutions

In the country, there are several anjumans, associations and auxiliary bodies which are

engaged in several activities. Some of them are social welfare bodies, political parties and

then professionals association. All are engaged in discharging special functions for which

they were formed. They release detailed reporters of their activities and dispatch the same

to newspaper.
