CTS Module Plan- Nicole Perl

Component 1:

Student Teacher: Nicole Perl

CTS Module EST 1140: Theatrical Make-Up 1
CTS Cluster HRH
Occupational Area Esthetics (EST)
Level Introductory
Prerequisite None

Description: (address what your module plan design is all about)

EST1140: THEATRICAL MAKE-UP 1 Students describe the purpose and scope of theatrical
make-up, identify elements related to designing theatrical makeup and use appropriate materials
to perform basic theatrical make-up techniques. Prerequisite: None

CTS Program:
Career and Technology Studies (CTS) is focused on giving students opportunities to explore and
experience different opportunities for possible career and interest pathways in an engaging
environment. By providing meaningful tasks that are focused on both product and process, CTS
courses give students a pathway to discovering more about their own interests and abilities.
The program aims to help prepare and deepen student understanding of the working world and
give students opportunities to expand their skillset to apply in daily life. This program not only
provides flexibility for students during their High School experience, but also aims to provide
career development and connections with post-secondary opportunities

HRH Cluster:
The Health, Recreation and Human Services cluster focuses on a vast array of challenging and
rewarding careers in health care, community supports, recreation, cosmetology, food services,
tourism, and law. Wellness is infused within every course. Relationships with people are also at
the forefront of this area. This cluster will help students choose programs that not only cater to
student interest and choice, but also aim to provide students opportunities to develop
specialized skills and knowledge in order to pursue exploration of related career opportunities.

Occupational Area:
Esthetics (EST) is one of the eleven occupational areas within the HRH cluster. An occupational
area in CTS is a grouping of courses that focuses on specific skillsets related to different areas of
work and interest. The Esthetics occupational area focuses on aspects that are commonly found
within the esthetics industries such as skin care, facials, manicuring, pedicuring, nail art, nail
enhancement, make-up, spa awareness, body therapy, hair removal, facial and body
adornment, and theatrical make-up.
CTS Pathway:
This module plan was developed for a school that offers an exploratory cosmetology pathway.
EST1140 would be offered alongside three to five other intro EST/COS modules in a semester.
The school I am designing this module for would ideally link Esthetics with Cosmetology as the
two occupational areas are heavily related when it comes to skillsets for the working world and
interests for students. My vision of this program within a school would refer to this pathway as
its “Cosmetology” program. This program would include both EST and COS modules in it and
the introductory level modules would set the students up for success in the intermediate and
advanced level programming. These modules all prepare students to work in career pathways
that are directly related to Esthetics and Cosmetology. The programs become increasingly
specialized towards careers in esthetics industries relating to hair, nails, skin care, and beauty
care positions.

CTS Module:
This module plan for EST1140- Theatrical Make-up aligns with the philosophies and rationale of
CTS programming and emphasizes the core aspects of the EST modules that will set students up
for success if they choose to pursue further modules in the intermediate or advanced levels. In
EST1140, students will learn and build upon fundamental and introductory aspects of theatrical
make-up. Students will also gain foundational knowledge in relation to facial anatomy and safe
and sanitary practices. Students will utilize their skills and show their knowledge in a variety of
different ways in their Theatrical Make-up portfolio which will be built upon further should they
pursue the higher levels of this module. Students will also examine the relevance of theatrical
make-up in numerous different career paths and discover the endless possibilities within this
module.

To demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of the EST1140 outcomes, the student will create
a series of projects, ending with the final showcase to apply and demonstrate their work and
connect with the community.

Rationale: (address why your design is important and your reasoning for specific design choices)
Prerequisites: None

Fair and Balanced Assessment:

The outcomes for this module have been thoughtfully grouped in order to their relevance to
each other and have been examined in accordance with their intended cognition levels. This
was thoughtfully considered in order to provide fair and balanced assessment of all students in
relation to the outcomes from the EST1140 program of studies.

Using a Rating Scale instrument, the basic competencies related to EST1140 will be assessed
formatively throughout the semester. These basic competencies will be clearly discussed with
each individual student multiple times throughout the semester in order to provide specific and
ongoing feedback. These will be assessed via an observational rating scale and will be used no
fewer than 3 times a semester. Because the student performance of the basic competencies
will not be assessed summatively, the comment section of the student report cards will reflect
their work with these outcomes.

Group/Clustering/ Prioritizing Outcomes:

Each group of outcomes in the EST1140 program of studies has been pre-arranged carefully
based on their similarities and themes in relation to what the students should be learning
through their work on each project. These outcomes have been grouped for summative
assessment purposes. Students will require these skills should they choose to pursue more EST
courses in the Intermediate or Advanced Levels. The outcomes that have been chosen for
summative assessment are aligned with the bigger picture of HRH courses in general. They
promote a vast array of career opportunities.

-Multi-Modal/Multi-Component Assessment Tasks:

This course is designed upon project-based learning. It is important to be that students are
given some choice, agency, and flexibility to show me what they know within their projects. The
integrated assessment plan assists in avoiding the problems that could potentially arise with
multi-modal projects. Student choice often strengthens student work ethic and helps cater to
different learning needs and preferences. All components within this module are designed to
be considered as flexible and can be easily adjusted to best fit the learning needs of all
students.

Assignment 1: Sanitary/Anatomy Project

Assignment 2: Inspiration Project
Assignment 3: Final Showcase

This module plan is designed with the intention of engaging students in meaningful and hands-
on learning opportunities. The plan emphasizes student-directed learning and promotes the
building of skills that are incredibly valuable to the work force. The plan promotes reflection
before, during, and after the process/project is completed. Students will also have the ability to
work with outside members of the school and external community. This module will introduce
students to the many vast career opportunities available in Theatrical Make-up and the
Esthetics sector.
