INCREASING ECONOMIC GROWTH OF PAKIL LAGUNA

I. Introduction

Pakil, officially the Municipality of Pakil, is a 5th class municipality in the province of
Laguna, Philippines that is known for its rich cultural heritages and religious traditions all over
the country. Aside from abundant cultivation form religious sectors, Pakil is also known for
whittling products that are made differently through the creative hands of Pakileños. It is made
popular nationwide because of the various designs of whittling products that can only be seen
here in Pakil. Despite having prosperous culture and social custom, Pakil is still considered as
one of the lower-class municipality in Laguna because of its poor increase in economic growth
caused by various reasons such as lower population of the said town, poor increase in country’s
production of goods and other means like communication development transportation etc.

According to Kiyemeee, economic growth is measured by the increase in a country’s total

output or real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or Gross National Product (GNP). Because of
slower increase in GDP, the economic growth of Pakil is affected, leading to slower development
of its economy.

Pakil is also known for having a lot of talented citizens in arts, particularly in music and
whittling. Pakil experiences slow increase in economic growth, yet whittling products are made
abundantly. Thinking about this issue of the town, promoting whittling products can be one of
the main factors in increasing the economic growth of Pakil.

II. Related Works

Social media is one of the most effective platform for promoting products and services in
one’s community. It allows businesses to be in direct contact with target customer. Social media
marketing is inexpensive and gives brands instant reach to billions of active users. For these
reasons, it is helpful for the developing community to use social media as an effective platform
for promoting whittling products that may lead to increasing economic growth. (fatbit.com,
2018)

The abundance of resources can be a stepping stone for the increasing economic growth
of a community. Based on researches, most of the developed communities in the Philippines do
have at least one of the natural resources that is abundant in their place. These are used as one of
the main cause why their places experience constant increase in economic development.
 According to Ira Stoll (2016), there are five (5) ways to improve economic growth. First
one is occupational licensing. Reducing, eliminating or harmonizing unnecessarily burdensome
requirements might improve things and has the potential to increase economic growth. The
second one is building taller. Allowing taller buildings would allow more people to join in the
high-productivity, high earning urban born. Another is lowering corporate tax rates. This
effective way would prevent companies and government from fleeing offshore. The fourth one is
simplifying tax code. Tax simplification could also help solve the problem of high marginal tax
rates. And lastly, promoting abundant products and services of one community. It would be a
good help to increasing economic growth when the abundant products are produce and be
involved in trading with other community.

III. Problem Statement

This paper aims to increase the economic growth of Pakil, Laguna by means of
promoting whittling products, which is abundant to the community.

This paper focused on the effective ways on how to promote whittling products in Pakil,
Laguna. This paper is intended to increase the economic growth of the said municipality using
abundant resources and creativity of the people in this place.

IV. Solution / Recommendation

Upon reviewing other works and literature related to this topic, this paper recommended
three (3) of the most effective ways to promote whittling products for the better and faster
increase of economic growth in Pakil, Laguna.

1. Through Social Media – this platform is effective for widest dissemination of

information about the products and may result to a better effectiveness of its purpose –
increased economic growth of Pakil, Laguna. This method is cost-effective and really is a
big help because most of the people can be able to see the product. It also consumes
lesser work yet effective in a bigger way for the reason that every concerned citizens of
Pakil and even those who loved to help Pakil can also contribute to the program by means
of sharing the information to other people in the country. It is one of the steps to earn
bigger income because through this, people/company may help to develop Pakil by
means of building partnership and even through whole sale purchasing of products.
2. Through Skills Training – because of slower increase in economic growth, some of the
citizens of Pakil decide for an option to leave their town and find a job elsewhere. Also,
some of their citizens do not have proper job because they lack in training and do not
have enough skills to work. This method can provide youth and unemployed citizens a
 skills training regarding whittling of products. Skilled and experienced whittlers of Pakil
will be the trainer of this program to create more talented Pakileños for whittling and
other forms of art. This is an effective way to help the citizens of Pakil to overcome
unemployment, increase the employment rate of Pakil, and more whittling products will
be produced that may result to a better increase in Pakil’s economic growth and
development.
3. Through Maintaining Abundant Resources – Natural resources that has been an
effective tool for producing more whittling products should be conserved to maintain its
abundance and the big help it is providing to the community. Though conservation of
natural resources in one community, which is special wood for whittlings in Pakil, they
could maintain the abundance of natural resources that will serve as one greatest
contributor in economic growth of Pakil in the near future.
