Hello Everyone,

So lots of aspirants here are asking about university rankings and university rankings in
particular subjects. Therefore, I thought it’d be better to provide you guys with some “statistics”
before you pursue on to apply for your dream university. Before going any further I’d like to
mention this list is exclusively meant for Undergraduate aspirants, so if you’re an aspiring
graduate you can stop your reckless skimming right here, until unless you want to amuse
yourself with my puns. And yeah, if a considerable amount of Graduate applicants are
interested in knowing about the rankings of the universities for their Graduate studies then let
me know. I’d try my best to fetch out all the reliable information for you guys as well.
Following universities are evaluated according to these six matrices:

● Academic Reputation
● Employer Reputation
● Faculty/Student Ratio
● Citations per Faculty
● International Faculty Ratio
● International Student Ratio

Before going any further I’d like to acknowledge that the University Rankings aren’t the sole way
of judging a university and, that’s why I was a bit reluctant in writing this article as I dread that
most of the applicants might take it otherwise. It might be possible that a university that’s ranked
highly might not live to your expectations whereas, a university that’s ranked poorly might leave
you amazed with its student experience, teaching experience and environment. Also there are
some universities that are ranked highly in some particular Majors so make sure that you do
comprehensive research while choosing universities of your interest. And If a university is
ranked 200+ or 300+ worldwide (in this ranking) it doesn’t mean that it’s a bad university, most
of the Korean universities are new and they had to compete with all these antediluvian
Institutions that were established as early as 1140’s, and were privileged enough to receive
great Financial assistance from business tycoons and their own alumni and not to mention their
affluent governments. Whereas, Korea is a developing nation and it has to invest in other major
fields as well in order to keep nourishing itself and to continue developing it all-around. So even
a 200+ or 300+ university is better as well KEEP THAT IN MIND!

An exhaustive overview of each of the aforementioned evaluation scales is presented below:

Academic reputation (40%)

The highest weighting of any metric is allotted to an institution’s Academic Reputation score. Based

on various Academic Surveys, it collates the expert opinions of over 94,000 individuals in the higher
education space regarding teaching and research quality at the world’s universities. In doing so, it

has grown to become the world’s largest surveys of academic opinion, and, in terms of size and

scope, is an unparalleled means of measuring sentiment in the academic community.

Employer reputation (10%)

Students will continue to perceive a university education as a means by which they can receive
valuable preparation for the employment market. It follows that assessing how successful institutions
are at providing that preparation is essential for a ranking whose primary audience is the global
student community.

This Employer Reputation metric is based on almost 45,000 responses to our The Employer Survey,
and asks employers to identify those institutions from which they source the most competent,
innovative, effective graduates. This Employer Survey is also the world’s largest of its kind.

Faculty/Student Ratio (20%)

Teaching quality is typically cited by students as the metric of highest importance to them when
comparing institutions using a ranking. It is notoriously difficult to measure, but it is determined that
measuring teacher/student ratios is the most effective proxy metric for teaching quality. It assesses
the extent to which institutions are able to provide students with meaningful access to lecturers and
tutors, and recognizes that a high number of faculty members per student will reduce the teaching
burden on each individual academic.

Faculty/student Ratio constitutes 20 percent of an institution’s final score.

Citations per faculty (20%)

Teaching is one key pillar of an institution’s mission. Another is research output. This survey

measures institutional research quality using our Citations per Faculty metric. To calculate it, you
total the number of citations received by all papers produced by an institution across a five-year

period by the number of faculty members at that institution.

To account for the fact that different fields have very different publishing cultures – papers
concerning the Life Sciences are responsible for nearly half of all research citations as of 2015 – it
normalize citations. This means that a citation received for a paper in Philosophy is measured
differently to one received for a paper on Anatomy and Physiology, ensuring that, in evaluating an
institution’s true research impact, both citations are given equal weight.

It uses a five-year publication window for papers, so for this edition it looked at papers published
from 2013 to 2017. And then took a look at a six-year citation window; reflecting the fact that it takes
time for research to be effectively disseminated. In this edition it look for citations from 2013-2018.

All citations data is sourced using Elsevier’s Scopus database, the world’s largest repository of
academic journal data. This year, the survey assessed 74 million citations from 13.5 million papers
once self-citations were excluded.

International faculty ratio/International student

ratio (5% each)

A highly international university acquires and confers a number of advantages. It demonstrates an

ability to attract faculty and students from across the world, which in turn suggests that it possesses
a strong international brand. It implies a highly global outlook: essentially for institutions operating in
an internationalised higher education sector. It also provides both students and staff alike with a
multinational environment, facilitating exchange of best practices and beliefs. In doing so, it provides
students with international sympathies and global awareness: soft skills increasingly valuable to
employers. Both of these metrics are worth 5% of the overall total.

NOTE: There’s ranking for Top-200 universities in each particular Subject as well. But they
need not to be necessarily consist all of the Korean Universities as these rankings are given
world wide and that too to just 200 universities and it’s possible that some Subjects may just
contain one or two Korean Universities. Also, I’ll upload the Subject ranking list a bit later as it
requires considerable amount of time and I’m short on it. I’ll keep updating this article so make
sure you have a look at it regularly.

So now we have a look at University rankings in various streams:

So these are the Korean University Rankings for 2019. If there'll be any change in their rankings
I’ll update it in forthcoming versions. Universities included in this ranking are independent of list
of Universities included in the “KGSP Participating Universities List” so it’s possible that a
University that’s ranked in this list might not be a participant university in the KGSP.
