Title: environmental catastrophe-south Asian floods 2007.

Hypothesis: ‘causes ,impacts and detailed study on environmental catastrophe-south asian floods 2007.

Introduction: the experience of an environmental catastrophe leaves an indelible mark on minds of the
people. One such disaster is flood. Floods have become one of the most common disaster in the world
today. Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Catastrophic riverine
flooding is usually associated with major infrastructure failures such as the collapse of a dam, but they
may also be caused by drainage channel modification from a landslide, earthquake or volcanic eruption.
Examples include outburst floods and lahars .selecting South Asian Flood 2007 would give me an
opportunity to emphasis not only one country but different countries that include India, Nepal, Bhutan,
Pakistan and Bangladesh. An in depth study of this event would help me in understanding the causes for
the outbreak of flood which include some indirect human activities and some plays of the environment
(nature) by itself.

Aims and objectives:

 To encourage awareness and provide support and information to communities about the ill
effects of flood.
 To identify the root causes of occurrence of flood (induced by human beings)
 Identify conventional flood prevention infrastructure.
 To study the impacts of floods on the life of common people or the entire ecosystem at large.
 To study the graph of the frequency of the flood.
 To establish educational & training institutions for educating communities in the areas of
“Disaster Management”.

Relevance of the topic:

Occurrence of floods is a natural phenomenon and man has to live with it right from the beginning.
It is not just confined to monsoon in Asia but it is a globally pervasive hazard . Floods have ravaged
portions of south asia from time immemorial but their impact was always devastating , since the
floodwaters would spread over vast open countryside which was sparsely occupied. An in depth
study about the south asian floods would enable us to understand and evaluate the past events ,
present occurrence and possibly predicting the future. It would also help portray the ill manners of
humans that is one of the reasons for flood. The level of effort it takes to perform a flood study can
vary significantly not only based on size, but complexity of the study area. A case study on this issue
will help us gain knowledge about the preventive measures that can be undertaken in order to avoid
flood occurrences, which in turn would be a protection, not only for human life and property but
also a bonus for a healthy environment. Our day begins with nature, are you wondering how? Let
me explain you how. A human cannot gain energy without the day’s bread and butter. This bread is
obtained from the grains which grow upon the ground. That means the food we eat is obtained
from mother nature. Floods and other disaster cause serious harm to the environment which
disturbs the entire ecosystem. Hence it is a subject of utmost importance to protect the
environment from such disastrous occurrences. Hence, it is very relevant to undertake a case study
on floods and since south asain floods are quite frequent it is necessary to study about it in depth.
