SELECTION CRITERIA
The case studies are preliminary study before designing of any project in architecture. It
enables one to know how to approach the correct process of designing the spaces, their
circulation, maximum total interaction, it’s security etc.

The case studies that we have selected because they have all the criteria like sports
facilities, use of open spaces, capacity to manage international crowd, ways of
understanding the techniques to merge residential areas with the sport complex.

RELEVANCE OF CASE STUDIES


Here we have done to live case studies and two literature studies. There relevance with the
design is described below.

❖ The study of SHRI SHIV CHHATRAPATI SPORTS COMPLEX and YAMUNA


SPORTS COMPLEX, DELHI will help us in understanding about sports facilities, like
stadium design, public crowd management, and their circulation, the use of material
and structural details.Since, Sports Academy will have stadiums and other facilities,
so it will give us a better way of understanding the design of the stadium.
❖ On the other hand the study of DUBAI SPORTS CITY and JAYPEE SPORTS CITY,
GREATER NOIDA will enable us to know about the orientation of a residential colony
with sports complex with other support services. It will help in knowing about zoning
of areas, sustainable environment, use of open spaces, social interactions, etc. it also
include the traffic movement and parking facilities and crowd management.

SHRI SHIV CHHATRAPATI SPORTS COMPLEX

INTRODUCTION

The ​Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex​, ​Balewadi​, ​Mahalunge​, ​Pune​ is an Indian
sports complex, which includes the ​Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium​. The
complex is situated in Balewadi, Mahalunge Pune, about 14–15 km from Pune downtown and
4–5 km from ​Hinjawadi​, Pune. This complex was the venue for the ​2008 Commonwealth Youth
Games​The sports complex is also venue for ​Khelo India Youth Games​, 2019.

HISTORY

This complex was built in 1994 for the ​National Games​ 1994, which were hosted by Pune. The
2008 Commonwealth Youth Games​ were hosted here. In 2008 the World Junior Table Tennis
Circuit was successfully held here. The ​2009 FIVB Men's Junior World Championship​ was held
here. It was won by Brazil. The city is also the host of ​FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship for
Women 2009​.

DESIGN AND PHILOSOPHY

“The sportsperson is more motivated by its environment and the type of enclosure it is
surrounded by”. ​The architect has tried to create a natural space which helps in motivating
sportsperson.

DESIGN CHALLENGE
The main challenge of design of sports complex was to integrate all stadiums and open
spaces in such a way that it could become capable to host international crowd.

ZONING OF BUILDINGS

Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune is an Indian sports complex. This
complex is situated in Balewadi, Pune, about 10–12 km away from Pune downtown and 4–5 km
from Blue Ridge and Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, Hinjewadi. This complex was the venue for the
2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. It was built in 1994 for the National Games 1994, which
were hosted by Pune. Currently the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games were hosted here. In
2008 the World Junior Table Tennis Circuit was successfully held here. The 2009 FIVB Men’s
Junior World Championship was held here. It was won by Brazil. The city was also the host of
FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship for Women 2009.

Athletics Stadium​ The Athletics stadium has a seating capacity of over 20,000 people at a time,
flood lights and an 8 lane track. This stadium also hosts the I-League matches for Pune FC

Badminton Hal​l The Badminton hall four courts and 6 warm-up courts, and has a seating
capacity of 3800 people at a time.
Basketball ​The FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship for Women was played on this stadium. Host
India finished in fifth position.
Boxing Arena ​The Boxing arena has 3 rings, and 5 warm-up rings, with a seating capacity of
3500 people.
Shooting Range​ The complex has 15 shooting ranges, with a seating capacity of 1500
Tennis Court ​The Tennis courts feature one central court and four competition courts, with six
warm-up courts. Centre court has a seating capacity of 4200 people.
Table Tennis Hall ​The hall, with a seating capacity of 1500 people, successfully held World
Junior Table Tennis Circuit in September 2008.
Weightlifting Hall​ This hall seats 3000 people. This will be hosting the 2009 commonwealth
bench press championships, the most famous athlete to compete will be Britain’s strongest man

​Wrestling Hall ​The wrestling hall has four rings, and six warm-up rings with a seating capacity
of 4400 people.
​Velodrome​ This is probably the only velodrome in India.
Games Village ​This is a non-sporting venue at the sports city with 400 rooms, ranging between
three and five star.

Fitness Centre

This centre has equipment to develop physical and physiological attributes; this hall is air
condition hall and has provision for Yoga and Meditation. This has provision for sauna and
chill water bath for recovery.
Sports Science Centre

This centre has sauna and chill water bath; this has seven departments:
1. Central dope collection centre.
2. Department of bio-mechanics.
3. Department of nutrition and ergogenic aids.
4. Department of physiotherapy.
5. Department of Psychology.
6. Department of sports rehabilitation.
7. Human performance and evolution laboratory.
