1. GENERAL
1.1 Intent
This specification covers the procedure of markings for the identification of piping
materials which shall be included in the plant designed by Toyo Engineering Corp.
(hereinafter referred to as Toyo) for RAPID SCC Project.
1.2 Scope
This specification shall be applied to piping materials such as pipes, fittings, valves,
flanges, gaskets, bolts and nuts.
2. REFERENCE DOCUMENT
The applicable Codes and Standards with the applicable edition are listed in the following.
MSS SP 25-2013 Standard Marking System for Valves, Fittings, Flanges, and Unions
In case of conflict between Laws, Project Specifications, Codes & Standards, the
following order of precedence shall be considered.
If the Lower Level requirement is more stringent than the upper one in the above
documents, a request shall be raised to OWNER for written decision before proceeding
with the Design, Manufacture or Construction.
4. MARKING GENERAL
4.1.2 Where stamping is used on pressure-containing walls, low stress stamps which
produce a round bottom shall be used; such low stress stamps are not required on
flange edges or on raised pads provided for marking purposes. Stamp depth shall not
exceed 1 mm.
4.1.3 Stenciling color shall be black, however for piping components whose surfaces are
black or dark, it shall be white.
4.1.4 Each component when Positive Material Identification (PMI) is accepted shall be
identified and marked with the code letters "PMI” of at least 6mm high (repairs of
welding not marked). Acceptable marking methods are low stress stamps, vibro-
etching, paints. Materials PMI tested shall remain identified during all fabrication,
erection and testing processes unless their identity is necessarily obliterated by
processing (painting, insulation, or plant operations).
4.2.1 Color coding is intended to supplement, not replace, the normal identification
requirements of the specification (for example, ASME, ASTM, MSS, etc.) to which the
pipe was purchased.
4.2.2 Basic colors to be used for material identification shall be as indicated below
conforming to BS381C “Specification for colours for identification, coding and special
purposes”. Paint shall be resistant to salt water atmosphere and tropical climate, and
be durable and of a distinctive identifying colour. It shall not cause corrosion of the
material to which it is applied, neither during storage and construction, nor during
operation of the equipment. Paints containing sulphur, lead, zinc or other metals are
not acceptable.
Blue 166
Light Orange 557
Pink 447
Violet 796
Light Green 225
Maroon 541
4.2.3 Brands of paint used for material identification shall be selected by manufacturer of piping
materials. For stainless steels, paints containing materials which adversely affect the
quality of the steel shall not be used.
5. PIPES
The following items or the like shall be indicated on all pipes. Marking shall normally be
accomplished by stenciling and/or punching, in the following order.
5.2.1 For pipes of DN40 and under, a stiff tag on which all items in Par. 5.1 are indicated,
shall be attached to each bundle of pipes. However, material specification shall be
marked on the outer surface of individual pipe.

5.2.2 For pipes of DN50 and over, all items in Par. 5.1 shall be marked on the outer surface
of each pipe.
5.3.1 Identification colors indicated in Table 1 shall be painted on the outer surface of all
pipes, except for coated pipes and galvanized pipes.
5.3.2 Each length of pipe shall be painted over the entire length with a 12 mm to a 40 mm
wide stripe, depending on pipe size.
6. FITTINGS
6.1.1 Marking item shall be in accordance with MSS SP-25 on all fittings. Marking for pipe
fittings shall generally be accomplished by stenciling and/or stamping.
6.1.3 Identification marks in Table 1 shall be used for wrought fittings and in Table 2 for
forged fittings.
6.1.4 When schedule No. cannot be applied, actual wall thickness in millimeter may be
indicated. Nominal sizes shall conform to metric system (DN).
6.1.5 In case of elbows, symbols indicating long radius or short radius type shall be included.
6.1.5 For small fittings on which all marking items cannot be fully indicated, the following
items, in whole or a part, may be omitted in the following order but, in this case, a stiff
tag on which all items are indicated shall be attached to each package of fittings.
6.2.1 Material Identification Colors in Table 1 and Table 2 shall be painted on the outer
surface of each fitting.
6.2.2 Each socket weld fitting, swage or pipe nipple shall be dabbed with a spot of paint 12
mm to 25 mm in diameter.
6.2.3 The entire length of each butt weld fitting shall be painted on the outside surface with a
12 mm to 40 mm wide stripe, depending on size.

7. VALVES
7.1.1 All items indicated in Par. 7.2 shall be marked on all valves.
7.1.2 Marking of valves shall be made on valve body, hand wheel, name plate and bolt & nut.
7.1.3 Marking on valve body shall be made on body or bonnet by casting-out, forging-out or
stamped.
7.1.4 Marking on hand wheel shall be made by casting-out, forging-out or stamped. When
marking items cannot be fully indicated on hand wheels, marking may be made
adequately by alternative method.
7.1.5 Name plates, which shall be generally attached on the upper side of hand wheels,
shall have marking by etching, press or stamped.
7.1.6 Marking on bolt & nut shall be made on the end face (bolt), or on the upper or side face
(nut) by punching.
7.1.7 For small or special valves on which marking items can not be fully indicated on the
body, markings may be omitted with OWNER’s approval in the following order:
Vendor shall inform the item to Toyo in case vendor wishes to omit markings because
of small space.
7.2.1 Marking Items and Marking Location shall be in accordance with MSS SP-25.
7.2.2 When the body material differs from the bonnet material, marking shall be individually
made on each of them. If the body material is the same as bonnet, marking may be
made on either one of them. In this case, material identification mark shall be in
accordance with MSS SP-25.
7.2.3 Stamp may be substituted for forging-out if forging-out is impossible. In this case,
Toyo’s approval is required.
7.2.4 Manufacturing number indicating the product history shall be marked on all cast and
forged steel valves. Date of manufacture may be marked instead of the manufacturing
number.

7.2.5 Each valve shall be accompanied by a test label or a quality guarantee letter indicating
that the valve has been carefully made under the control of the manufacturer and that
its quality is guaranteed. Instead of this, stamp marking may be used for this purpose.
7.2.6 Arrow of flow direction shall be indicated unless the type of valve allows for
bidirectional flow.
7.2.7 Letters or Symbols such as “OPEN” and “CLOSE” and Arrowhead shall be indicated
on hand wheel. This item may be marked on valve body for butterfly valve.
7.2.8 Commodity code (MESC), which is indicated in BM (Bill of Material) Sheet and Data
Sheet, shall be marked on name plate. In addition, Commodity code (MESC) shall be
indicated on the outer surface of valve body by painting.
7.3.2 Each welded or flangeless (wafer type) valve shall be dabbed with a spot of paint 12
mm to 25 mm in diameter.
7.3.3 Each flanged valve shall have the outer peripheral edge of each flange painted over
the entire circumference. For flanges thicker than 25 mm, the width of the band may be
limited to 25 mm.
8.1.1 Marking item and marking location shall be in accordance with MSS SP-25 on the
outer surface (rim) of flanges. Items which cannot be indicated on the outer surface of
stub end, may be marked on the outer surface of pipe by stenciling or painting.
8.2.1 Material identification colors in Table 1 and Table 2 shall be painted on the outer
surface of flanges.
8.2.2 The outer peripheral edge of each flange shall be painted over the entire
circumference. For flanges thicker than 25 mm, the width of the band may be limited to
25 mm.
