Welcome to the start of a new school year! I am so thrilled to have you in our class for Geometry this year. As
you are aware from taking Algebra 1, the expectations of a high school class are a bit higher than some other
classes. We will all work together to achieve our goal. I am looking forward to a successful year where all of
you will develop the necessary skills to be strong mathematical thinkers.

Your Teacher: I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a B.S. in Secondary Education-
Mathematics and a minor in Psychology. I am currently attending GVSU for my master’s degree in Curriculum
and Instruction with an emphasis in Differentiation. This year will be my 3rd year of teaching at Crestwood, and
my 2nd year teaching Geometry. I love dancing and teach dance classes outside of working here. I enjoy
camping, fishing, and board games. I also recently got a cat, named Rizzo!

Course Description: Adapted from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (p. 27)
The fundamental purpose of the course in Geometry is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences
from the middle grades. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of
geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments.

Textbook: We will be using the book called Discovering Geometry with Probability (Fifth Edition). It is part of
the Discovering Mathematics series. You will receive online access to this book so you will not always have to
take the book home with you.

Grading
Quizzes (30%):
● Quizzes will be given after every few sections of new material.

Practice (10%):
● Homework assignments and warm-ups will fall under this category.
● Homework assignments occur (almost) nightly and are graded based on completion and all work being
shown. Students will receive the answer key in class on the day it is due and are encouraged to edit their
work.

Tests (40%):
● Most chapters will have a unit test after we have covered all of the material in the chapter.
● Students will receive a review for extra practice before each test.

Exam (end of each marking period) (20%):

● Each marking period will have an exam at the end over the material from the ENTIRE marking period.
● This exam cannot be retaken and is not eligible for corrections.

Academic Dishonesty
All work that is turned in must be your own (or your group’s). You may not do any of the following:
● Turn in or copy someone else’s work.
● Copy someone’s work and change a few of the words or numbers.
● Copy an answer from the internet.
● Attempt to use any notes on a closed-not assignment.
● Look at someone else’s work during a quiz, test, or otherwise individual assessment.

If you are doing any of the above or anything else that constitutes cheating, you will receive a zero on that
assignment, and you will be referred for discipline.
Quiz Corrections
● Students may complete a correction sheet for up to half the points back if they scored lower than an
80% on a quiz. Correction sheets are due one week after the quiz is returned to students.
● Graded quiz must be attached to all corrections or retake forms.

Test Retakes
● Students will be eligible to retake most tests throughout the year (exceptions will be stated in class and
communicated with parents via email).
*The instructor reserves the right to make changes*

● Students must complete a retake ticket (provided by the teacher) to prove they have studied and must
schedule a time with the teacher to retake the test.
● The grade earned on the retake will be the student’s grade for the test.

Late Work, No name, and Make-up Policy

● Late work will only be accepted up to one week after the original due date for a maximum of 70%. A
PINK late assignment slip must be attached and the paper turned in in order to receive a grade for the
assignment.
● No name papers will automatically receive a 10% reduction. A late assignment slip must be attached and
the paper turned in in order to receive a grade for the assignment.
● Quizzes and Tests: If you are absent on the day of the quiz, you will make it up the day you return.

Hall Passes
● You will receive 3 hall passes each marking period.
● Ms. Lampen will keep track of them.
● These passes include bathroom and hallway/locker passes.
