ambas as orelhas (KANDEL, SCHWARTZ, JESSEL, 2000).

RESUMO
O sistema auditivo humano é único e difere do das outras espécies porque
desenvolve a capacidade de receber, interpretar e reagir à linguagem de forma
complexa.
ABSTRACT
The human auditory system is unique and differs from other species because it
develops the ability to receive, interpret and react to language in complex ways.
At birth the auditory system is functional, but it will continue to develop for over
a decade. Prolonged periods of sensory deprivation during this period may
cause permanent hearing loss. The purpose of this article was to describe the
main stages of the auditory system development and the factors that may
interfere with this development.
KEYWORDS: auditory system; development, sensory deprivation; hearing loss.
