2
INTRODUCTION
• Water treatment is the process of removing
un-healthy suspended materials from the
water.
• There are many steps to treat the water.
• The water is made potable using the
treatment of water.

3
Need For Water Treatment
• The main source of water is rain. In the
process of reaching the ground , the water is
mixed with dirt, dust and chemical impurities.
we need to remove the impurities to consume
the water for various purposes, mainly for
drinking water.

4
STEPS INVOLVED IN WATER
TREATMENT
1. Sedimentation
2. Coagulation
3. Filtration
4. Disinfection
5. Storage of water in Reservoirs

5
1. SEDIMENTATION
• Sedimentation is the process of removing
suspended material from water using the
Sedimentation tanks.
• Stoke ‘s law involved in sedimentation, according
to this law the gravity force's exceeds the
resistant forces of water to the suspended
spherical particles, the suspended particles
settles down at the bottom of the tank.
• The settled material is at bottom used for Crops
in Forming for manure.
6
2.COAGULATION
• Coagulation is the process of adding
coagulants to the water.
• The flocculation is done to remove the settled
particles by coagulation process.
• This is affected by pH of water and
characteristics of water.
• Alum is commonly used in coagulation

7
3.DISINFECTION
• Disinfection is removing harmful micro-organism
in the water .
• There are many methods of disinfection, they are,
1. Using Ozone
2. Using chlorine
3. Using boiling process
4. Using bleaching powder
• Commonly we use Chlorine gas for disinfection.
• The potable range of water is 0.5 ppm.
• At reservoir we use 2.0 ppm chlorine amount.
8
4. FILTRATION
• This is the process of removing suspended
particles remaining after sedimentation and
coagulation by using Filters.
• There are two types of filters , they are
1. Slow sand filtration
2. Rapid gravity filter
• We commonly use the rapid gravity filters for
filtration, the main reason is its speed of
filtration and economy.
9
5.RESERVOIR FOR STORAGE
• There are some distribution reservoirs for storage
and distribution of water.
• Commonly we add chlorine at reservoir , using
chlorinating chambers only.
• The water is stored and then supplied by the
pipes.
• There are two types of tanks , they are
1. Ground level service reservoirs
2. Over head tank

10
CONCLUSION
• The treatment of water is very important for
the health of the people. Because, the
resonance of unhealthy material from water is
made potable, thus the human beings can
consume it.
