COMMITTEE 503 (for Public Comments on 503.3) and ACI 548B ADHESIVES FOR CONCRETE
Sheraton – Columbus A, Chicago, IL
Monday, March 22, 2010

1. Meeting was called to order at 11:16 am. Members and guests were self-introduced. Attending were
members: Constantin Bodea, Tim Bower, David Fowler, Bob Gaul, Quentin Hibben, Tony Murray, Brad
Nemunaitis, Aly Said, Michael Sprinkel, Mike Stenko, Art Weiss, and Richard Wollmershauser, and
guests: Ingo Alig, Mohamed Bassuari, Hassan El Chabib, and Michael Schmidt.

2. Committee Documents discussed:

4.a 548.E (formerly 503.1-92 (Reapproved 2003)), Std. Spec. for Bonding Hardened…to Hardened
Concrete—Wollmershauser. Currently in TAC review. No action needed.
4.b 548F (Formerly 503.2-92), Std. Spec. for Bonding Plastic Concrete to Hardened Concrete—
Wollmershauser. Currently in TAC review. No action needed.
4.c 503.3-92, Std. Spec. for Producing a skid-Resistant Surface on Concrete by the Use of Epoxy and
Aggregate—Balloted Public Comments revisions 2/1/10 – 3/3/10. 1 Editorial comment from Tony
Murray was withdrawn after discussion. Document to be sent to TAC.
4.d 503.4, Std. Spec. for Repairing Concrete with Epoxy Mortar—David White. Balloted negatives
and rewriting from previous ballot 1/12/2010 – 2/11/2010. No comments or negatives received.
Forwarded on to TAC.
4.e 503.5R-92, Guide for the Selection of Polymer Adhesives in Concrete—Bob Gaul. Under revision
for future ballot.
4.f 503.6R-97, Guide Adhesives Bonding Fresh to Hardened Concrete—Bob Gaul. Balloted 2/10/10-
3/12/10. Two sets of comments were received (see attachment) and discussed. All were accepted by
unanimous vote, with the provision that comment on page 6 lines 4 – 7 should be consistent with
other documents. Left as “50 % or more.”
4.g 503.7-07, Standard Specification for Crack Repair by Epoxy Injection—No action needed.
4.h 503R-93 (Reapproved 2008)— This document was approved by TAC for a 3 year period.
Committee 503 has been requested this document be updated within 3 years. Quentin Hibben has
been reviewing. The need for this document was discussed. Document will be reviewed to
determine what content will be folded into another 548 document rather than update this document.

3. Joint Technical Session with Committee 355 on Adhesives and Adhesive Anchors: Morning and
afternoon sessions this week – March 24, 2010. 20 abstracts received, 18 approved for presentations. A
Special Publication with at least 21 papers will be prepared.

4. New Business:

a. Brad Nemunaitis announced that there will be a web site for ACI 548B (this Subcommittee).

503.6R Comments from Ashraf Ahmed and Mohammad Alhassan on

Committee ballot:
1. Page 4, Line 27: Add "AND" between ACI228.1R and ASTM C1583
2.Page 11, line 17. "I" should stay and remove "II". The sentence will be Type I
latex adhesive.
1) Page 6, Lines 4-7: I am not sure whether 50 percent failure area in the concrete at depth of ¼ in. or
greater will warrant adequate surface preparation. Although we are adding "or more" but take a case
with 50% and consider different pull out values (say 240psi), then to which you will attribute the 240
psi, to inadequate surface preparation or to weak concrete? I would rather leave it at 90 percent or at
least 70 percent or more.

2) Temperature effects of mixing, application, and working time.

Epoxy and substrate temperatures have a direct effect on the usability of the epoxy compound. The
quantity and temperature of the adhesive at time of mixing have a significant influence on the working
time. Elevated temperatures will thin the epoxy, easier to mix and apply, shortens the working time in
the container, with less open time before early polymerization will affect the bonding ability of the
epoxy compound. Cooler temperatures will thicken the epoxy increasing the difficulty of thorough
mixing, lengthening the working time in the container and extending the open time prior to the
placement of concrete. The quantity of adhesive to be mixed at any one time must not exceed the
amount that can be readily applied within the pot life or working time of the specific adhesive.

3) Page 10, Line 1: keep “surface” after properly prepared.
