ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Nobody writes and publishes a book without the help of other

people, and the book is no exception. The researcher would like to

gratefully acknowledge the contributions of several people who have

helped him to complete this interactive multimedia courseware.

A very special thanks to his wife SHEILA MARIE KABINGUE-

VERECIO. This instructional material had been an incredible burden in

his family life, but she has put up with a lot!

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you get a really good editor. An

instructional material like the interactive multimedia courseware is

always stronger when an author can work in partnership with someone

who knows his stuff. He was fortunate to have Dr. Roque Batulan, his

adviser and at the same time the primary editor of this research. His

many thoughtful suggestions strengthened the organization of the

chapters and improved the writings.

The technical accuracy of the interactive multimedia courseware

was improved by the thesis committee who provided careful scrutiny and

double-checking of all the example and steps in the courseware.

Dr. Edward Y. Chua and Mrs. Eden Chua-Pineda for their

understanding, encouragement, support, and for giving the researcher

the chance to study, this will be a meaningful endeavor.

Assumptions

This study is premised on the following assumptions:

1. The teaching – learning process becomes efficient, orderly,

relevant and systematic when well-organized and proper instructional

materials are used.

2. The use of interactive multimedia courseware raises student’s

interest and enhances their understanding of the material.

3. There is no interactive multimedia courseware in Fundamentals

of Problem Solving and Programming being developed in Asian

Development Foundation College, Tacloban City.

4. A developed interactive multimedia courseware will be a useful

as a remedial instruction for the slow learner students, or as enrichment

materials for the fast learner students.

5. Developed interactive multimedia courseware will be used as a

private tutor to a given learner, teaching and drilling him even more

patiently than the most diligent or persevering teacher.

Research Design

The educational research method used by the researcher in this

study was the descriptive method, which involved a questionnaire to

evaluate the developed interactive multimedia courseware.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study include the eleven (11) computer

teachers and the two sections, each section is composed of forty (40)

students of First Year BS Computer Science enrolled in Fundamentals of

Problem Solving and Programming at Asian Development Foundation

College during the second semester school year 2002 – 2003.

Data Gathering Instruments

The main instruments used in this study are the questionnaire,

interview and observations.

The Questionnaire. A questionnaire for students and computer

experts was designed to assess the developed interactive multimedia

courseware in Fundamentals of Problem Solving and Programming in

terms of: (1) Content (2) Manner of Presentation and (3) Usefulness of

the materials.

Interview. The researcher conducted unstructured interviews.

This was done simultaneously with the administration of the

questionnaire. When there were doubts about the responses of the

respondents, the writer verified and clarified their answers through the

interview. Items left unanswered by the respondents were answered

during the interview.

Observations. These were conducted among the students in order

to note their reactions and attitude toward the interactive courseware

while trying it out.

Research Procedure

The researcher had undertaken the following procedures for the

completion of the study.

Gathering of Data. The availability and reliability of data are very

important to this study. The researcher, with his four years of teaching

Turbo Pascal for Windows lessons, had compiled course notes, examples

and presentation slides he used through the years of teaching the

subject. Information from the Internet and Reference books were also

taken to enrich the concept development of the courseware.

Organization of Lessons. The researcher organized the lessons and

ensured that the content of the courseware is sufficient and the

presentations are progressive. A tutorial approach was employed to

address the needs of the students.

Identifying Software for Multimedia Production. The selection of

tools used in the development of the Fundamentals of Problem Solving

and Programming courseware was initially based on the availability of

and familiarity with particular software titles. The researcher made use

of Asymetrix Toolbook II Assistant 7.

Template Construction. The design of the courseware was made

through the imaginative and creative idea of the researcher. As the

study developed, the researcher constantly consulted some faculty

members and his students for the improvement of the courseware

design. The comments and suggestions were appropriately incorporated

in the courseware.

Encoding of Objectives, Concept Development, Exercises and

Assignments. The courseware was designed for both group and

individual instructions. The size of texts, visual effects, links and other

features were carefully considered so that learners can effectively

comprehend the lessons contained in the courseware.

Testing. The courseware was tried out for many times in the class

sessions of the researcher. As certain obstacles and bugs were

encountered, the courseware was constantly improved.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Upon completion of the data gathering, responses were tabulated

to facilitate the analysis during the interpretation of data.

Weighted Mean. This was used to determine the respondents’ assessment of

the courseware in terms of content, manner of presentation, and usefulness of the

material. The qualitative description of the weighted mean was determined using the

following scales:
