“Meeting people”
Personal pronouns and the verb “to be”
 Pronouns are words we use to refer to people, animals and things.
 I/You/We/He/She/They/It

Examples:

1. I am from Chile.
2. You are a student in this program
3. He is in the language lab
4. She is a tutor in the English couse
5. It is a great party
6. We are in the same class
7. You are Exchange students
8. They are from the U.S.A

Contracted forms
I’m

1. I am your grammar coach.


2. I’m your grammar coach.

You’re

1. You are a new member of this community


2. You’re a new member of this community

He’s

1. He is a student in the Business program


2. He’s a student in the Business program

She’s

1. She is an exchange student from New York City


2. She’s an exchange student from New York City

It’s

1. It is an international community
2. It’s an international community

We’re

1. We are all members of the English Online Community


2. We’re all members of the English Online Community
You’re

1. You are new members of the English Online Community

They’re

1. They are students of the English Online Community

Verb “to be”: Negative form.


1. I am from Chile > I am not from Chile
2. You are a student in this program > You are not a student in this program
3. He is in the language lab > He is not in the language lab
4. She is a tutor in the English course > She is not a tutor in the English course
5. It is a great party > It is not a great party
6. We are in the same class > We are not in the same class
7. You are exchange students > You are not exchange students
8. They are from the U.S.A > They are not from the U.S.A

Verb “to be”: Negative form and contracted forms.


1. I am not a student > I’m not a student
2. She is not a teacher > She’s not a teacher
3. He is not from the USA > He’s not from the USA
4. They are not in class > They’re not in class
5. We are not in the library > We’re not in the library

You are not a teacher > You’re not a teacher

It is not a class > It’s not a class

Verb “to be”: Interrogative form.


1. I am a student? > Am I a student?
2. You are a student in this program > Are you a student in this program?
3. He is in the language lab > Is he in the language lab?
4. She is a tutor in the English couse > Is she a tutor in the English course?
5. It is a great party > Is it a great party?
6. We are in the same class > Are we in the same class?
7. You are exchange students > Are you exchange students?
8. They are from the U.S.A > Are they from the U.S.A?

Ex.

a) Is she a teacher?
R: No, she isn’t. She is a student.
b) Is she from the USA?
R: Yes, she is from the USA.

Information questions
 Where?/What?/When?/Who?
 These are words to ask about specific information.

Ex.

a) What’s your name?


My name is Francisco Burgos.
b) Hi. Mary, how are you?
I’m fine, thanks. And you?
c) Where are you from?
I’m from the USA.
d) How do you spell your name?
E-D-O-A-R-D-O.
e) What are you studying?
I’m studying medicine.

Demonstrative Pronouns.
 Whe use “THIS” to show things thar are singular (only one) and which are located at a
close distance from us.
 We use “THAT” to show things that are singular (only one) and which are located at a
certain distance (far) from us.
 We use “THESE” for things that are plural (more than one) and which are located near us.
 Whe use “THOSE” for things that plural (more than one) and which are located at a certain
distance (far) from us.

Possessive adjectives.
1. I > my
2. You > your
3. He > his
4. She > her
5. It > its
6. We > our
7. They > their
 First name / Christian name = Primer nombre
 Middle name = Segundo nombre
 Family name / Surname / Last name = Apellido
 Nickname = Sobrenombre
