Spelling Bee and Speech Competition

Each classes has 2 representatives, one for spelling bee and one for speech.
Total participants: 56 (28 for spelling bee, and 28 for speech)
1. Spelling bee
a. Participant must spell in English
b. Participants are not allowed to bring any devices or dictionary
c. There will be 2 rounds; Preliminary round and final round
d. Participant can start spelling after pronouncer say the word twice
e. Participant have the right to ask the meaning of the word (definition), repetition,
and example of using the word.
f. For asking instructions, participant just say: repeat please / definition please, etc
g. Once a participant pronounces the word, he or she has 30 seconds to spell it
h. Participant is required to lock the word as the sign of the correct spelling. For
example D-O-C-T-O-R (key saying: doctor)
i. Participant who have not locked the spelled word is still allowed to change spelling
during duration
j. Participant who spell more than spelling duration will not get point
k. 2 points will be reduced when participant misspell during spelling
l. Non English pronunciation , will get 50% point reduction
m. Participants who get the same score, a tie break will be held to decide who the
winner is

I. Preliminary round
 If the participant spell one word correctly without the help of
instructions, participant will get 40 points for level I and 60 points
for level II
 Each participant will get 5 words to spell
 5 Points will be reduced as the instructions requested
 Participants who get 6 highest scores will get into final round
II. Final round
 Each participants will get 4 words to spell
 If the participant spell one word correctly without the help of
instructions, participant will get 80 points for level III and 100 points
for level IV
 Start point is 0
 10 Points will be reduced as the instructions requested
 Participants who get 3 highest scores will be the winners
2. Speech
a. The speech must according to one of the chosen themes
 City cleanliness for environmental preservation
 The development of social media and technology and its challenges for high
school students
 School as a second home for students
 A good quality education for Indonesia
 English as an international communication language
 Speech competition only for 1 round
b. Maximum time to deliver the speech is 5 minutes
c. Assessment criteria
 Delivery aspect (20%)
- Maintained eye contact with listeners
- Speak loudly and clearly
- Use effective posture, movement and gesture
 Communicative ability (30%)
- Pronunciation is clear
- Speak fluently, without too much repetition
- Grammar and vocabulary choices are reasonable accurate
 Content (30%)
- Showing a good understanding of topic
- Providing examples and details
- Meet time limit
 Organisation (20%)
- Effective introduction
- Logical development of ideas
- Clear transition
- Effective conclusion
